#121 Re: Guns N' Roses » Zodiac and Deconstructing Axl Rose » 386 weeks ago

That's curious, thanks for compiling it all. 22

Axl's own interest towards the Zodiac killer has likely obfuscated the meaning of the song title. Mind you, TSI? has some Zodiac code on the cover art, spelling out FUCKEM ALL.

Axl's own morse code admission that Chinese Democracy is "what got through the red tape".

I'd like to see the actual quote on that.

Overall, it's a curious suggestion that CD2 (Stay of Execution?) would feature more politically/environmentally tinged lyrics. That's likely to cause issues. Procrastination is one thing, if you're the top dog, but having your views on the world slapped into a corporate product in plain English - that's actually a more unsettling prospect. In the far end, that's biting the hand that feeds.

Axl approached Youth of Killing Joke to produce CD at one point. Surely, he was aware of KJ's brand of lyrics.

Do we know that for sure? Dj and Richard made several noises about working on stuff in that period.

We don't know.

I've argued some stuff has been recorded, here and here.

This is based on band members (Fortus & Pitman) hinting they've been into the studio w/ Axl on and off. Ignore Ashba and Ron, they were out of that loop on a permanent basis - just touring guys.

That's one way to look at it, sure. But here's thing. Currently, Robin lacks a product (an album). He prefers to do something else than cater to a (tiny) online fanbase. His credentials are solid, whenever he chooses to push through an album. Until then, all that would be there for him would be posting abstract poetry and imagery and shrug off questions about Guns/NIN.

If he'd ever announce a solo album, his tiny but rabid fanbase would latch on to it, anyway wink

The new A-List referenced in 2002 is a mystery considering near everything we've heard dates to 1997-1999.

Bucket & Brain came in and some new songs were written, including Shackler and Scraped. They replaced some songs in the original '97-'99 A-list.

And yes, a music video commissioned for a song 2+ years old. The label was smartly not having any of that.

Sean Beavan said OMG had been around for a few years when Iovine picked it up. This correlates with Axl's OMG press release, saying parts of the song were a few years old, written by Paul and Dizzy when Duff and Matt(!) were in the band. But OMG became a real song only in '99, so dating CD songs in general is a gossamer procedure tongue

As for the Catcher shoot, Paul Buckmaster said Axl'd visited the Orient when they met in mid-June, '02. If we take both reports with Axl's word for it, that'd mean he went down to China before and after the '02 minitour, culminating with the VMA's.

"Now Axl, about the album release..."
"I'm going back to China to write more songs."

Man knows his strings. Cool stories and Robin's playing there is pretty epic 9

For sure, but look.

Such characters in general big up their valid and existing (despite how tenuous) contacts. The aim is to get personal attention. That's why you give a little, to establish credibility. After that, you spice ultimately inconsequential things with innuendo, and get all evasive when questioned.

Walker can prove me wrong quite simply, only I fear he over-promised himself a bit, there.

If that stuff was told confidentially in a private convo, it's a bit rude to share in public.

On the other hand, mentioning them at all opens a can of worms among those who'd care to hear the details.

You can't win this one tongue

If you're after a lyrical shift similar to Trent Reznor - around Year Zero - when he stopped draining the well of self-pity (which had lent to a few cracking albums), that would be interesting on Axl's part.

Maybe not too scientifically motivated, but Ax has shown a penchant for politically charged themes (Civil War). That could be a recharging avenue for him, instead of the same old story of the world coming up and at him.

Holopainen of Nightwish has been, in the past, inspired by Scrooge McDuck.

That's fine, but I'd think twice before saying he's a particularly profound thinker.
