We want a new album every 3 years or whatever because we're bored. The label wants it because of their business cycles. But who says his mind is able to do that? Maybe it's just outright not how his talent works.

You have a point there and that's the Andrew Eldritch argument, who put his band, The Sisters of Mercy, to an indefinite album strike, making themselves pariahs at the record label industry. He came up with the album a few years later (conveniently while detaching the band from their old label), but no-one bought for their heyday price tag, because the labels saw them as a risk. This was years before Kickstarter and ITunes, so doing an indie release wasn't as given as it is know.

The argument is that the record labels have generally been poor to tender their band since the 70's. Even then, there were bands lacking in income for their hard work and talent, but at least we got loads of good music from major performers. Floyd, Led Zep, Sabbath... There lots and lots of bands around that laid the foundation to the music we've had during GNR's era, and beyond. The overall position of the creative artist as a productive member of society is gaining.

Axl is the ultimate pariah. He led the biggest band in the world, the Geffen darling, to be a Universal nightmare. Uni have been given their share of laughs, since GNR (particularly reunited GNR) is still worthy of doing Big Business. The consensus has always been that his album kept the reunion hostage. Now, there's no album, no reunion, but steady touring. Income. But there are no cards blatantly at the table, no public talk about a new album.

Axl could open the CD vaults at his own expense to edit together an album's worth of solid material. He could even give the best cuts to the live band and have them record their own versions. Put in killer Axl vocals, and you have deal. Get label support for an Internet ad campaign, making fun of yourself and showing off the current live band. Tell Ashba to tell anyone interested there's going to be a new album, with a single out NOW. That would do well enough business and help the CD legacy to be remembered for more than 15 songs in as many years.

#1083 Re: Guns N' Roses » HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETA!!!!!!!!! XOXOXOXOXOXOx » 687 weeks ago

We could go on on about this, but I will leave it at this post.

You draw a distinction on her birthday, we use the HTGTH attitude of her birthday as an excuse to publicly dispute her position as someone who is said to have been beneficial and in charge of management of a band with a history of lousy business decisions, statements and attitudes.

Going personal about her birthday is childish, I agree. However, I doubt she reads this, for one. Secondly, she has brought this on herself by publicly associating with a band, while denying a key component of what made the band great in the first place. She stepped into a place dear to many people and took it for granted. This is a singular instance of a counterbalance reaction caused by general frustration. Childish, yes, if childish means picking in absence of better ways to influence the matter.

I understand that, to you, birthdays in general appear to have the significance to warrant a cease fire; that's fine. I only regard birthday as a public event, like some traditional feasts in remembrance of one's character, where the host accepted the good and the bad from his guests, free speech was advocated on the night without fear of repercussion. As we know from HTGTH, free speech is not a hot commodity for the GNR camp.

They go overtly positive, we go overtly negative. If HTGTH would be a more balanced place, many of us would likely be in their thread, wishing Beta well and hoping the next year will be a better year for GNR than this one. As such, it's not to be.

Too bad, really.

Today is her birthday. So what? Is it a good opportunity to bash her? Sorry, but it just isn't right, even if it was supposed to be a parody of other sites.

Sorry.

We bash Axl for many reasons, most of them valid from a public perspective.
Axl runs GNR, he gets the blame every time GNR blow something up in public.

Beta storms in, steers the HTGTH attitude to worship.
Jarmo runs HTGTH, so Jarmo gets the bashing for it.

Beta has a public event (annually, the only personal one we know of).
We bash the public figure of Beta Lebeis for Team Brazil.

It's not supposed to be taken personally as Beta, but professionally as Beta Lebeis of Team Brazil. You get the distinction?

Dear Beta,

You may be a wonderful human being and a caring mother in your private life and that's fine.

But you have consistently treated the GNR fanbase as lesser mortals, time and again bullying people who dare to have a differing opinion. Karma's a bitch.

Hence the dislike we show to you and Team Brazil. You may prove us wrong by showing a more lax attitude if you choose to deal with us (the fanbase) directly in the future, but I'd prefer not hearing from you on behalf of the band at all - same goes to Fernando; get a real publicist.

Deliver us an album or quit your job. HBD.

I haven't bothered with the new Dallas, but I admit that sounds good.

I'm tempted to come across that particular episode, eventually - also I think it's great Ewing got both the reprise and a posthumous tribute there. Hagman was a fine actor and he deserves his legacy.

Sure is....and Axl doesn't seem to have forgiven Slash for it to this day.

And it appears to be one particular sore point in their relationship, as in, Axl appears to think that he was busy reinventing GNR, and while he claims he wanted to hone IFOCS further, he dismisses the released album as a bit half-baked, to put it mildly. Based on what Axl and Slash have both said about the era, I think Ax got a bit jealous over the fact that while his own solo album floundered, Slash pulled his one off on his own - without ever intending to do a solo album in the first place. Not only that, but Axl apparently felt that having tasted the supposed glories of autonomy, the Slash that came back wasn't as ready for the reinvention of GNR as Axl would've wanted / hoped / expected. In other words, Slash "turned his back" on Axl (with IFOCS) and "betrayed" him (in the later Paul Tobias sessions).

I'm not Axl, and I wasn't there, but that's the general idea I get from the IFOCS era. 19

What is the etiquette on holding a GNR writing session sans Axl? If the others all wrote and liked a song idea and Axl didn't - would he mind them all releasing it under another name without his involvement?

The precedent to this scenario is called It's Five O'clock Somewhere.

I'd rather have a "touched up" live show where Axl kicks ass - sings with rasp and power and does justice to the songs - than a 100% honest warts and all version where it makes me sad that the songs don't sound "right" to me anymore

Hear hear.

Should he do overdubs, like he certainly did with Live Era, the question remains, what's the big deal? Would any of you prefer a DVD of Guns as the Mickey Mouse Club?

In more modern times I wonder if he's slightly obsessive about technical aspects of the show - now he's the boss of everything that he knows it will fall on him if anything goes wrong and so he perhaps spends a lot of time analysing those aspects that can delay him being ready, and, it's also entire speculation from me, but I've wondered at times if perhaps he has anxious moments or something too and maybe needs to psyche up a bit some days to be rock-star-axl.

I recall Baz saying that Axl used to look at him work up the crowd (during the 06 tour, maybe) during his set, and that Baz's performance sort of set the bar for Axl himself on the night. I could definitely see that friendly competition thing between frontmen going on there, but that sort of alludes stagefright (or whatever you would call it) would still be an issue with Axl.

Given how he's managed by Team Brazil (as indicated by Eddie Trunk's producer among others), how he's told about interviews at the last minute as he'd otherwise be freaked out for days, etc., I can imagine him obsessing over any given shows production value. The problem seems to be that he often appears to get only so much information beforehand, which can obviously lead to bad judgment. On the other hand, he's the boss of it all in the GNR camp like you said and he can be downright strident if he so chooses - look at the berating Beta and the literal Team Brazil got after they were invited on stage during the latest Rock in Rio. "Whose fault is it?"

A lot of it is Axl's fault in the long count (because he IS the boss of it all in GNR), but he does put forth a good deal of effort once he actually gets on-stage. As long as the performance is good, people do tolerate his shtick more.
