In fairness, I wasn't aware Axl was miserable during the 2002 NA tour
The dudes appearance, the constant slagging off of the old band, dodging the question of when will the record come out... I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder, but I always felt slightly embarrassed by the 02 Axl. The Mickey voice didn't help. He reappeared in 2006 as a completely different person, more like the one I used to see.
But he very well could have been in a bad place early on in the UYI tour without showing so outwardly.
Axl literally stopped the show in Helsinki '91 for 20 minutes or so, due to his personal issues. Also, in the Trunk 2006 interview, he refers to listening WASP in order to psych himself to get on-stage, only to publicly lash out at Geffen and Tom Zutat re: the UYI release schedule. He wasn't in the best of moods.
As crazy as he is, he doesn't let his miseries carry with him onstage. For the most part.
I think the lateness is oft just that; getting into the right mindset to perform, instead of carrying his issues on to the crowd and giving them a rotten night. This is something I think he has, unquestionably, gotten better at as the years've passed.

monkey,
I do agree with you that the business model has certainly changed from the labels' viewpoint. However, Axl has gone on the record on his displeasure on the Uni's handling of CD and the fact that he even bothered to mentioned the label at all in this instance (in times when exclusive deals between artists and live-event companies are commonplace as opposed to label support) seemed like a jab at their general direction. As in, 'We're doing fine despite our label'.
But time will tell.

Good on him to admit his personal problems created issues at the UYI tour. Also, I figured as much that promoters/agents sometimes give him sideways information to get him to commit to shows as he comes with stipulations (the nature of the biz), even if many shows have been booked without his consent.
Saying he doesn't want to take shots at any of the old guys, while still slipping a few fast ones on Slash (Paul Stanley, the UYI tour). Axl, if you don't have anything nice to say about the guy, don't say anything at all - or better yet, let go of them yesterdays news already, as like you said, life is short.
Mostly, lucid, entertaining and frank. Nice PR, he certainly appears to be more at peace with himself than a few years back.
The Goldwynism ('definite maybe') was particularly cute. I bet Ron'll be thrilled to read about it.
"minimal to zero label support [re: tours]" doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, tho.

Nice. If only they'd stop screwing up releases.

Do we know the exact figures? I think we can only guess.
The CD advance was, I believe, around $10M, and Ax still went overbudget. Don't believe the Motley figure; $4M on them is probably closer to reality.
GN'R began work on a new album of original material, drawing from a Geffen advance thought to be around $10 million - Madonna kind of money. - RS

someone who has “writing cred” was brought in and pronounced that after 10 years Axl had 3 good songs in CD. That apparently set him back a long way. Who was that?
Oh,

Sounds the way it should to me. The best performance comes in most cases from the person who wrote the piece in the first place. Such is the case here.

i also LOVE his book The Ass Saw the Angel. it's real south america gothic stuff stuffed w/demented kids & crazy preachers/people. haven't read his newest one tho.
Really enjoyed the first book, was a tad let down by The Death of Bunny Munro. Worth reading because of Cave's style, but a bit shallow and predictable, I felt.
his film work is stellar too - the proposition one of the best westerns of recent times.
Do track down Ghosts of the Civil Dead, Hillcoat's debut feature with Cave as one of the leads.
