Based on what Marc Canter's said, the main issues appear to be

Slash releasing the Snakepit songs instead of forging them into a 1995 Guns album with Axl & co and
the accusations that Axl blackmailed the name out of everyone by throwing a tantrum just before showtime.

If so, I'd be willing to believe these incidents are just the tip of the iceberg, as their relationship had been deteriorating over time. The press ran with the concept that Axl broke the band and hustled the name, while Slash did stand up to Axl by forming Snakepit.

The reason Ax stays angry (while having patched up with, say, Izzy) is that his entourage keeps him there.

BH and Finck were great, but let's not forget they only had 2 or so writing credits on the album.

The Smashing Pumpkins / Teargarden by Kaleydoscope approach could work for Guns, actually. They have enough tracks in the vault to keep a reasonable production / release schedule with the physical product coming to the picture somewhat as an afterthought (think compilations).

Of course, no major label has gone this way. Which serves as another example of how ridiculously inept they are in dealing with the digital revolution. Name me one major artist who wholeheartedly loves his/her label.

Can't think of any, myself.

I was referring to one of their press releases, where they stated that Axl doesn't care about money and all he cares about is art. Obviously he's very money-orientated, like this case proves it again.

You have to keep in mind (and THIS is Axl's fault too) that his press releases are written by sycophants. They are as based in the reality that they want to bathe Axl in, not the real one.

Let's have a closer look at those.

He's not motivated by money, he's motivated by his art. - Baz, 2006

Axl Rose was one of the only artists I ever worked with who was never motivated by money. - Tom Zutaut, 2005

W, Axl Rose is not interested in fame, money, popularity or what the New York Times or any other paper for that matter might think of him. - Merck, 2005

When Baz said that, he was on tour with Guns, still waiting for his solo career to be validated to a degree by Angel Down. The Merck and Zoot comments were responses to the damning high-profile piece on CD in The New York Times. In Baz's case, it was just sucking up. Merck (his manager) and Zoot (his former A&R turned whistleblower), on the other hand, were doing routine damage control, also implying on the mounting costs of CD; their coda being 'Axl doesn't give a crap about the expense, he cares about quality'.

So those comments need to be put into context, and I'm not trying to be an Axl apologist here. Just saying that if you want to bag the man, at least be fair about it. He's done more than his share to give the lot of us an ample amount of opportunities there.

Ain't it funny that we still have the debate that this isn't GN'R cause the players changed, when the biggest hiatus is Axl himself?

It's not Guns N' Roses because Axl's not giving them a chance to be Guns N' Roses. This is true to all post-93 lineups; key players on CD were absent by the time the album was out; they'd had to settle to be an AFD tribute band, the current lineup is a CD/AFD tribute band. That ain't right when taking into account the work they put up into this band.

Axl may not owe the public another album, but he sure as shit owes one to the current lineup.

The band was really great though. Very great. They deserve and need to hire a better singer to form a super tribute band. Or a new one that makes and releases music.

That's the depressing bit, right?

Leaving the band name issue out of this, Ax currently has a more than proficient lineup behind him, a group that genuinely seems to like one another and would certainly have a good album or two under their belts. It's way better in terms of chemistry / skill than most backing bands for lead singers and a lot more than what he deserves at this point. He rewards them by doing fuck all aside touring. Coward; he could easily do a new song or two again live, to test the waters and allow the band to feel smug about playing new stuff they created as a unit.

#1110 Re: Guns N' Roses » When's Album? » 694 weeks ago

Another Ashba mention of a new album. Try to contain your enthusiasm, eh?

Once the tour is over, Guns N' Roses will turn their focus to working on a seventh album.

Despite dozens of songs in rough form, the band are in no hurry - but there won't be another decade-long delay.

"It won't be another Chinese Democracy but then again we're in no rush to make a bad record," says Ashba.

"Failing is not an option so we're putting our heart and soul into this one."
