Nah.

I like you, Buzz. You make me smile.

People who are curious to a new Guns N Roses album.

It's open to a billion variables...under this theory every subsequent album from an artist would sell less than the one prior because of the people who didn't like the last album...when it's not quite that simple...

St Anger and Death Magnetic have both reached double platinum, even if people generally liked the latter album more.

(I notice Neemo just beat me to include this - funny that 16)

But you're right, the law of diminishing returns doesn't quite cut it. Axl (or any other recording artist) will never again receive the treatment GNR had from 94 to 2004. That was just a big spending party and Axl just ran with it. I blame Geffen for putting on the cotton gloves whenever they tried to deal with him. So that option is done away with.

But as you say, there's enough material for an additional album. Whatever production still needs to be done, Axl may have to self-finance it and make a compensation arrangement with the label when it's ready to be released. Hard to say, I don't know the specifics of the revised recording agreement.

I find it funny that we have to justify common sense in various elaborate ways. tongue

So...if people streamed it and didn't like it, and people bought it and didn't like it, it's reasonable to expect that sales would be lower for a subsequent album, correct?

Not really.

The quality of Album #2 doesn't depend on CD. The main selling point is the name Guns N Roses.

What if Album #2 is streamed and people who disliked CD would like it? Wouldn't it be a safe bet to expect the sales to increase to reflect that?

You cannot be fucking serious...

It's something new, and it goes completely against the grain. They're not relying on their back catalogue or someone else's. They're not trying to "re-invent" themselves and have half the band wear eyeliner. They're taking the signature sound to a new environment, not bothering with the general consensus.

The album has them, doing what they do best, in a place they've never been before. For better or for worse, I feel the effort is commendable.

Ask best buy how many they sold at $1.99.  Record company execs know what I know.  I'd like to think they know more than I do, but that's debateable.

Read the reviews above of the leaks.  Read the album reviews.  Two weeks in the album is done from a sales perspective.  This isn't rocket science and that's not only a marketing issue.

Well, like you say

lets ignore the 99% and focus on the 1%.

CD sold handsomely worldwide (hint: BestBuy ain't the world), but we can obviously forget about that.

Guns are still a highly in-demand live act in Europe (headlining the likes of Reading/Leeds last year), South America (RiR this year) and Canada, to name a few markets, but let's not focus on that.

The record industry in general is a twindling market, and the overall amount of units sold by any act has fallen drastically during the past decade, but we can let that pass for now.

Do keep up.

One day we can all look back and think, jeez. Buzz was right about it all. The fools we have been to have ever bothered with this band in the first place.

Putting it simpler....

If Axl phoned up the label and said "Hi, I'm starting a brand new project and I need you to pay for it" then they'd be nervous - takes too long and it's a gamble to get paid back.

But that's not the phonecall.

Its "Hi, I have these finished songs that we've already paid for, want to box them up pretty and release them?".

Now where's the downside of that again?

Because that's not how it's going to happen.  It's going to be "I have these songs, but I need to get my 2 new quitarists to play some stuff that 2 of the old guitarists played and just tweak a couple other things here and there..."

Buzz, you're avoiding the question.

Why would Geffen/Interscope turn down a new album from a band, which has been one of the most successful (if not THE most successful) brand name in their roster in the past quarter of a century?

The name Guns N' Roses ships units with the recognition value alone. With a decent push, the album could easily match/surpass the US/worldwide sales of CD, despite the fact that CD itself had already turned half-way mythical. The interest is still there, and capita is still to be made.

We can debate until the end of days on how the GNR brand got to be considered so valuable, but the bottom line is, the value is there, giving the brand owner (Axl) an ace in the hole, should he decide to re-enter the music biz.

Guys,

Everybody has an opinion. BUT.

Are we a bit harsh there?

I really liked the first three tracks, after the album lost me for a bit. I agree on some of the criticism here, but I wouldn't call it a lost cause. It's actually quite a ballsy album, when considered as an overall statement. Here we have Reed and Tallica prancing to the beat of an infamous late 19th century German play.

Lyrically, Lulu draws heavily from Wedekind's Earth Spirit and The Pandora's Box, down to plot points. So if you're unfamiliar with the source material (available in cinematic form as well, I recommend The Pandora's Box (1928) by GW Pabst and Lulu (1980) by Walerian Borowzyck), you're bound to be left a bit astray in what Reed is trying to pull off there.

Stylistically, Reed's lyrics are actually very much in line with Wedekind. Having said that, I had a hard time picking things up into any sort of logical sequence in relation to the plays. The third track, Pumping Blood, for instance, evokes Lulu's encounter with a john she picks up from the street near the end of the 2nd play, Pandora's Box - and he's none other than Jack the Ripper. Within that context, I actually found the track to be haunting.

This is Reed doing one of his off-the-wall sonic experiments, using the band and brand of Tallica to pony up public interest. Which is like setting your house on fire to catch those heat-seeking missiles, for sure.

Like he cares. He stands very little to lose in terms of legacy, finance, etc. All Tallica need to do to redeem themselves in front of their die-hards is to continue to be a fan-friendly band and prove this to be a one-off, which doesnt deride them from doing Death Magnetic II.

The end result's not as deliberately unlistenable as Metal Machine Music, but it's no Master of Puppets, either. Anybody who expects Tallica to appear as anything they've been during the past 20 years, will obviously be sorely disappointed. I can appreciate the reasons why.

Bluntly, it's self-indulgent and polarising - and far from perfect. I'm not asking you to reconsider your opinion after you gave it the time of the day. I doubt reading the play would magically change your outlook on the album. You'd merely see the lyrical context appropriately, which either contributes to the experience or not.

Having said all that, I find it to be a refreshingly daunting piece of work - and would say it's the most interesting thing I've heard in relation to Tallica since Justice.

Axl handled the situation professionally.

Keep singing once you have a sure footing, get your shit together and get back on stage.

He barely missed a beat there.
