#1621 Re: GNRevolution Madness » GnREvolution MOVIE Madness? » 880 weeks ago

I'm not sure I'm down for this one.  I get the feeling that there are going to be a lot of horror films and since I don't watch that genre at all that might be difficult for me to vote.  I'm not opposed to this I'm just curious what kind of stipulations should be put in.

Freebird.  I love classic Aerosmith but Walk this Way is overplayed.

Yeah there is the question of when DJ started rehearsing with them exactly.  Obviously it is a lot of material to learn.

Is there really though?  He'd obviously have to learn AFD and CD, but they wouldn't be doing that many songs off Illusions.  Lies would probably get two at the most and they'd maybe toss in a Spaghetti Incident song or two. I going to assume that he's a skilled guitarist so why does it take him three months to learn previously recorded material?  Unless they want to bring out a whole new set of CD era tunes which would make me very happy and intrigued.

Buzz,

I went there last week and casually glanced at the cd rack.  The yellow price tag indicated the price was $11.99.  So it was selling at regular price.  There was still a lot of Chinese Democracy cd's there too.

I can understand why he goes on there, but that doesn't mean I have to agree with it.  Honestly, I usually check out after the dreck in the first week.  The thing that really bugs me about this show is that there are a lot of talented musicians struggling out there to make it.  They play in small clubs because I think they love their craft and geniunely believe in it.  Then you have this show which is basically a glorified karaoke contest.  Most of the females have to sing in a certain style and some are selected for their personal story.  Even if you don't win you get some form of PR.

I'm saying that MOST Oscar winners, are flashes in the pan. Think about it.

Every year there's the Oscars right? How many repeat winners are there? How many of them go on to long term success?

I think multiple nominations over the span of a career, versus one win, is far more of an accomplishment. Winning ONE Oscar means you were popular in ONE film, at ONE time, in ONE year.

I was in total agreement with this point until I actually went to the oscars site and looked up the past winners.  Not all of them have been failures with their post oscar projects.  I think the bar is different if they won for an art film than a mainstream film though.  You really cant expect an actor who does primarily character work to suddenly start acting in mainstream films now can you?

Okay here's a list of winners for both men and women's best supporting actor from 1994-2007 (2008 excluded for obvious reasons)

Best Supporting Actress

1994--Dianne Wiest--Bullets over Broadway
1995--Mira Sorvino--Might Afrodite (two straight years for Woody Allen films)
1996--Juliet Binoche--The English Patient
1997--Kim Bassinger--LA Confidential
1998-Judi Dench--Shakespeare in Love
1999-Angelina Jolie--Girl Interrupted
2000-Marcia Gay Harden--Pollack
2001--Jennifer Connelly--A Beautiful Mind
2002-Catherine Zeta Jones--Chicago
2003-Renee Zellweger-Cold Mountain
2004-Cate Blanchette-The Aviator
2005-Rachel Weisz--The Constant Gardner
2006Jennifer Hudson--Dreamgirls
2007 Tilda Swinton--Michael Clayton

I'm gonna save the male supporting actor winners for another post since this one is getting long.  Here are the clearly successful post oscar win actresses: Judi Dench (Bond films, and another 4 nominations since her win), Angelina Jolie (no explanation needed), Cate Blanchette, Tilda Swinton (impressive post oscar resume--Narnia film, Burn After Reading, BB).

Here are the actress's whose careers have kinda nosedived after the win:Kim Bassinger, Mira Sorvino, Rachel Weisz (suprisingly, her post oscar resume hasn't been good), Renee Zelliweger, and Jennifer Hudson.

The rest are arguable on whether or not they failed after their oscar win.  Does anyone expect Juliette Binoche, a French actress, to star in a lot of mainstream US flicks? Or Marcia Gay Harden and Dianne Wiest?  Some of this stuff is skewed because they won for "art" films and I don't really expect these women to start suddenly acting in mainstream films.

I think the main point is that a majority of these actresses enjoy long term success although your interpretation of the word may change your perspective.

#1628 Re: The Garden » KFC gambling on chicken that is grilled, not fried » 881 weeks ago

I just tried the grilled chicken. For me it was just okay. It is really soft and moist, but it wasn't seasoned well. I thought it was a bit bland. The left the thigh on the grill too long because the top was hard and unedible. I'm a small person with a small appetite, but I thought the chicken seemed kind of small.

I don't think I'll be going back to KFC in the future. It's alright if you want a quick meal, but I prefer to grill up my own chicken.

This is pretty much my reaction as well.  The chicken was nice and juicy but it was BLAND with zero flavor.  The sample I tried was kind of small too.  I give them some props for trying to infuse their menu with a new product, but it just doesn't work for me.  However, if I had to pick between this or McDonalds I'd choose this one.

#1630 Re: The Garden » WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Raise Pandemic Alert Level » 881 weeks ago

I'm somewhat of a germophobe and obviously have an interest in this topic.  I don't think the government has done a good job of telling the nation about swine flu.  Is it safe to eat pork?  Serious question.  I think I heard somewhere if you cook it thoroughly, it should be safe to eat.  What makes swine flu different from the regular flu virus?  I hate whenever there's a potential pandemic outbreak and when the symptoms are listed they mirror the normal flu symptoms; so you really can't tell whether or not you have it.  Unfortunately, I have some of the symptoms and I think it was because of a sinus infection (I get a bunch of those--deviated septums SUCK).

Raising the threat level doesn't really do anything to educate people.  I equate it to that stupid color coded system used by Homeland security.  They'd raise the thing and tell people to be vigilant--whatever that meant.  To a minimum they should be giving out more details just to soothe the fears who think they have swine flu.
