I agree. And the part where they say there was no proof it was coming out anytime soon I couldn't agree more. And although I do not download or upload music I would've leaked those songs too had I been in his shoes. Matter of fact the only reason I downloaded the CD songs was because I was sure it was the only way I'd ever get to hear them. Makes me wonder if we'd have the album if there had been no leaks.

James Lofton wrote:A reunited GNR releasing an album that sells 4 million copies here?? I highly doubt that. At this point in the game I'm wondering if a tour would even do great business. The success of an album is an even bigger question mark.
Best case scenario would be a Steel Wheels type comeback with a good album that has a few great songs. I don't see such an album connecting with four million people here. To pull in those types of numbers requires the youth to be snatching those albums off the shelves, and that's just not gonna happen for an act that would be in their early 50s. Kids aren't gonna be dancing in the street to their parents and grandparents idols. Fuck, Lady GaGa cant even pull in those numbers and her songs are everywhere and she's relevant, but a 50-55 year old Axl and Slash can?
Only way they could even dream of such numbers is a Wal Mart exclusive, Wal Mart pushes it and does it really cheap, and all their shoppers grab it from the display while being in line buying a gallon of punch and pack of bologna.
Anything less and it just isn't happening.
^^ Guns n Roses have the potential for a Led Zeppelin type reunion. They are one of the most popular bands of all time. NO matter where you go in the world you will find original GNR fans. They could easily sell 4mil on a reunted orig lineup album
Even a tour would disappoint Stepven. Back then those guys were rebels, they were hyngry to make their place in the music world. That is gone now. And the marathons you got for a show when Axl decided he would play back in the illusion tour would not happen for many reasons nowadays and one of the biggest is that those guys have done just like we all did. They got older. A reunion tour would disappoint. I pray they never do reunite except for the Rock hall of fame. Let the legacy intact.

madagas wrote:Too drunk to read it all but I never want Gnr (the original band) to come back and release shit like Aerosmith and AC/DC do now. Aerosmith was done in 1977...Gnr was done in 1991. AC/DC was done with Back in Black. The Stones were done after Some Girls in 78...I would rather see Axl and the new guys forge their own path than be crushed by a shit "original" Gnr new studio album. That being said, I would like to see Axl and Slash do something together.
Bullshit 'ya drunk...
Perminate Vacation & Pump are two of Aerosmith's best albums, yet were born in the return.
Razor's Edge is one of AC/DC's best albums, and came out in 1990, years after Back In Black.
And the Stones were done with Exile...
I agree with most of what you said Axlin except one thing. Permanent Vacation is NOT one of Aerosmith's greatest record. It is a solid record I'll give that to you but not one of their greatest. Pump I agree is one their best. As for AC\DC I don't see where madagas comes from with this as AC\DC as NEVER changed their format at least since Back in Black. So to say they have released turds as albums would be saying Back in Black was a shit album. And Razor was a fantastic record I do agree Axlin. Where I do agree with madagas though is that yes a reunion would disappoint everybody and I do mean EVERYBODY! They're all in different places in their lives. Appetite will never be duplicated by GNR. And I'm not even sure they can pull another Illusion quality album neither. Don't believe me Axlin? Listen to Spaghetti. While it is a covers album you can hear the band is not as tight as they used to be. Trust me a reunion would only diminish GNR's legacy.

Smile was never a mess. Wilson didn't fuck around in the studio for fifteen years. The Smile sessions totaled less than 2 years.
Thanks for the info and correction then madagas.

The DJs were always gonna hit them with negative buzz; unless they put out a killer single and the public got behind it, it was always gonna be "Blah blah where's Slash blah blah I'm a whiny little bitch."
Better was an ideal single - short, punchy, killer hook, sounds very different to the old band while still retaining that bluesy feel with the outro solo, some great changes of direction and solos from both the lead guitarists.
They should've put Better out first, then hit the public with TWAT - a grandiose follow-up to November Rain, with the big outro solo that proves Axl didn't need Slash. In my head, I picture a video in which Buckethead emerges from a chicken coop on top of the same fucking cliff as in the November Rain video, plays that solo and is beamed up to his home planet. Ah, if only they'd released THAT in '02.
Once the band's demonstrated that it can do hard rock and an epic ballad that can outdo November Rain, it's time to bring out the crossover single - If The World.
Fuck, a trained monkey could've made this thing a hit. The one thing they SHOULDN'T have done is put Chinese Democracy out as the first single.
YEP.
I really believe the album could've been huge if promoted right. The real question in my mind is "Who's to blame for the bad promotion?"
My friend at Uni seems to believe that it's all Axl's fault.
While I wouldn't put the entire blame on Axl a large part of the blame lies on his shoulders. The long never ending wait, the false starts, lack of interviews, promotion, lack of video and many other things. But I also blame UNI on this. While I understand their stance that CD had already cost them enough, it is their fault that they gave that much money to Axl to record that album. In my opinion CD is the biggest "clusterfuck" to quote James in the history of music. Even though it took less time I consider CD to be a bigger mess than Brian Wilson's smile. No record could've succeeded under those circumstances. Axl would've come up with another AFD and it would've failed. That's how big a mess this album is.

CD is over and a new chapter has begun. They seem to be doing things right now. Let's hope it continues. Continuing to debate the failures of Chinese is utterly pointless. Quit looking back and look forward. Keep hope alive!
I hope this new chapter will be a good one. But it is certainly less appealing. Maybe Axl will be able to bring it back eventually.

Agathos. It's not that we became more fans of the mystery. But how could I put this? See Axl in my opinion fell asleep at the wheel. People wanted to hear new music from him. They really did. And that is why that in 2000 or 2001 when he played at the Rio festival it got people talking. Then in 02 he did the VMA's and had he released his music back then I think it would've been more successful. Instead he chose to play the waiting game. And while the die hards waited, the average Joe didn't and he lost all his momentum. And back in the Illusions days, it didn't matter that he played new songs during shows in advance cause aside from the people that attended the shows, few outside would hear the new material. Can't do that anymore so the vast majority of the songs had been heard for years. So yes we may have had the magic when we heard it then. But as far as the success of the album it hurt cause not only did the die hards had heard all the new tracks, but the average joes that cared enough to at least check it out had heard the tracks as well and for a long while as well. Therefore when CD came out yes it was a new GNR record, but a new record with really old music in it. And that is where the aura was gone. Most tracks had been played many times. When CD came out it felt like I just but a greatest hits. And people didn't wait back then cause quite franctly they probably thought it would be the only way to hear that music anyways. If Axl really wants to come out with more music I hope he learned from his past mistakes.

Neemo wrote:yes but if diehard fans dont give a shit anymore then why should joe-average?
Good question. If die-hard fans stop caring one would expect the same for everyone else. I completely agree. But I don't see why die-hard fans should care less about new music because they downloaded the leaks for CD; I just don't see a plausible mechanism here. The die-hard fans did not get less, they got the same, albeit from a different source. The music has in no way been devalued because of the leaking. The music remains the same. If they were fans of GN'R's music before they should still be (given that the music is good).
If "die-hard" fans stop caring about GN'R and their music now, I think the mechanism is that these so-called "die-hard" fans just grow up and care less about music in general (we all tend to do), or because they are fed up with other aspects of being GN'R (there are many to choose from), rather than how they obtained the music, and mistakenly, perhaps even knowingly, attribute this novel lack of interest to the leaking.
I just find the notion that getting the music through leaks rather than official releases should turn away die-hard fans a bit absurd, perhaps because I don't see a plausible mechanism and because I personally, as a die-hard fan, couldn't give two shits where the music came from.
99 % of the so-called "die-hard" fans are adolescent and their music taste is vicarious and their dedication transient. No wonder they get bored. Being a die-hard fan requires stamina. New kids will take their place (if GN'R do the right things). The real die-hard fans don't get so easily turned away.
I can't speak for others but for me it's not that I care less about the music. Don't get me wrong. If Axl were to announce a new album is coming out, I would buy the album no doubt. I just don't care anymore about the rumours, the delays, the leaks, tours. I don't care about all the behind the scenes stuff anymore. If he ever decides to come up with new music then great if not so be it. I'm totally comfortable with the idea that CD was the last GNR album we'll ever get or should I say Axl. Even when some of the band members speak through interviews and such I only glance at what was said. I don't care anymore. I still love music, music will always be a passion for me but I'm just not interested in all of Axl's shenanigans anymore. Leaks are not gonna turn me away cause I'll ignore them leaks. And as for CD leaks. I agree we did not get less on the album. But what we got were songs that most die hards had heard for years. So the "new music" was actually really old to most of us. So in that aspect I guess we got less. And because of all the waits and the delays, CD had lost all it's aura of mystery.

What a waste.
What is a waste? His talent? Yeah but if that is what makes him happy then so be it.

Neemo wrote:he's saying that every song you hear in advance of the album kinda lessens the impact of the album when it finally goes on sale
Is he? I thought he was talking about the "surprise element". Surely, the surprise of hearing new songs is the same regardless of whether those songs are leaked or officially released. Whatever it is within the songs that are surprising remains the same regardless of how we obtain the songs.
But okay, we are now talking about "the album impact". I agree that the impact of the album necessarily must be reduced when the songs are already known. But what we gained was a huge impact of the leaks! I would dare to say that the impact of the leaks which we got is equal in size to the impact of the album which we lost. Hence it doesn't matter. Of course the album meant less to us when the content was already known compared to a situation where it was all novel. So we ended up buying the record to support the band, not to hear the songs. But I dare to say that what I lost album-wise I gained leak-wise. The impact of the music remains the same. And GN'R still got my money.
I'm saying that yes in these days and age leaks are common. But in the case of GNR we heard the majority of the songs more than a few months before. Some were nearly 10 years old and some close to a year old so when the album came out, we knew exactly what was in there, what it would sound like, basically we knew it all except in my case for 3 songs to which I had refused to listen to the leaks. The others I did listen cause I was sure it was the only way I would ever hear new music from Axl. So yes when CD came in stores, the magic was simply gone. I remember when the Illusions records came out I was thrilled and couldn't wait to hear the new music. Well in CD there was NO NEW MUSIC. Sad but true and yes I have myself to blame, we all can blame ourselves, but Axl isn't blameless here. We were all eager to hear new music from him and for reasons that are still unclear he wouldn't let his fans hear it. And Mister ID I said I still wanna hear new music from Axl and that was the reason I followed it closely. And maybe I had my life wrapped around it, either way the mystery is still gone. Now we have CD, we know what Axl was able to come up with without Slash and the others. So the mystery is all gone there too. To me anyways it's gone.
