Slash chimes in some...
SLASH Talks About DUFF MCKAGAN's Jam With GUNS N' ROSES, Possibility Of Classic Lineup Reunion - Oct. 30, 2010
Legendary guitarist Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES) was the featured guest on last night's (Friday, October 29) edition of Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow below (transcribed and edited for clarity by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):
On AEROSMITH's Steven Tyler signing on as a judge on "American Idol"
Slash: "It's really sort of disappointing to me that he's gone and done that, for whatever reason — a lot of it having to do with [that fact that] I just know the guy and the other guys in the band are bummed out and they've had a really rocky road for awhile. And then just because 'American Idol' is what it is, so it's hard for me to put the thing together."
On Duff McKagan joining GUNS N' ROSES on stage on October 14 at London, England's O2 arena:
Slash: "It was cool. I got an e-mail from Duff going, 'I'm checked into a hotel and Axl [Rose, GUNS N' ROSES singer] is in the room next to me.' And that's how it all started. And he just sort of kept me posted through the day and at one point he said he was going down to the venue with Axl. And I was, like, 'Wow!' 'Cause a lot of years have gone by. And so then the next one was that he was gonna be going on stage or something. And so he went and they did, like, I think it was five or six songs. So it was cool. And then the next day he told me it was great, everything was very cool, they went out and had dinner, and so they had that sort of, whatever, rekindling kind of thing. All things considered, the only thing I said about it was that... 'cause I know that they still ended up going on an hour late. And I was, like, 'Oooh.' That's the only part that would have left a bad taste in my mouth, supporting that."
On why he (Slash) seems to be the only member of the classic GUNS N' ROSES lineup that Axl is not "cool" with:
Slash: "I think there's some deep-seeded stuff there. And it really can only come down to what was going on at the time when I finally said, 'I've gotta go.' And I think there was a certain sense of abandonment there. So it probably stems from that. And then even though I try to keep a politically correct tongue in this situation, I have at times really spoken my mind about the situation, especially when VELVET REVOLVER's first record came out, I was inundated with all this press and that was all that they wanted to ask about, and my first gut reaction was venting. So there was a lot of negativity that was sort of expressed then and has since been perpetuated by the media on a regular basis. So there's a certain kind of tension that just hangs in there."
On whether he would ever consider taking part in a reunion of the classic GUNS N' ROSES lineup:
Slash: "It's been a long time. So, all things considered, if he [Axl] really decided he wanted to do it and the other guys all wanted to do it... I mean, I know everybody's around, but there has been no conversation, like, 'Let's get the band back together.' If everybody wanted to do it and it was very clear amongst us, which means we would have to clean up some personal stuff, which we haven't even begun that. So then the biggest and most important part of it was... 'cause it seems like it would be a lot of fun to do, just go back out there, and it seems like a relatively simple idea and there's a ton of fans out there that would love to see it. It'd be cool. But we'd have to do things way differently than we did in '91, '92, '93 and whatever... And I don't think that's changeable. That whole production would have to tighten up and be like a real working band, and I don't think that's salvageable."

Setlist bitching is an old thing, but.
Most people hear that setlist only once. Having said that, they started to drop new songs midway South America. That's when they fell from "promoting CD" to 5 new songs, which is 2002 all over again.
Pity.

Del works hard, but the organization leaves a lot to be desired.

They started the NA 06 tour by Del losing a tour bus en route. NA 02 - Axl on the plane to Vancouver. I wouldn't want to work there.

True.
Managers often, if not always, travel with the band, but road managers control the logistics. GNR tours big, so no small deal.

I've heard of LCD Soundsystem but not Marina & the Diamonds. If a majority of the crowd was in their teens/early 20s, I'm not surprised they bailed on GNR.
LCD Soundsystem is actually A Very Good band, only not outdoors. Saw them warm up a festival for Chemical Brothers.
Too bad.

Ron doesn't like late starts and wants to record new music.
Sounds a lot like Bucket if you ask me.

It's clear they'd be more widely accepted as Guns N' Roses if they'd just get Robin back.
Yup.
And Bucket too. That'd fill stadiums.
....
Alright. I'd go, anyway.
#1709 Re: Guns N' Roses » what does Axl/GNR have to, to regain your interest 100% » 824 weeks ago
And GnR is a nostalgia act just like every other band that fits that profile.
If the current tour would come out as more than an afterthought to promote CD, they'd be more than an AFD band throwing some new numbers.
Maybe...once people got done laughing at them.
The band today with Bucket would go down well, only if they'd be promoted as a band. People are generally more open to the idea of a GNR member wearing a bucket than they were a decade - or, heaven forbid, two decades - ago. A little band promotion wouldn't hurt, tho.
We're definitely image conscious. I think if Izzy came wearing a clown suit to a photo session, we'd want to know how he could validate his presence in a clown suit. [Laughs] But if he could back it up and convince us there was a reason, then it would be cool. Otherwise, it wouldn't be. - Axl, '89
Bucket's a performing artist and his outlook is an extension of his persona. I personally find the stage clothes of KISS way more redundant, but I digress.
Even if this was true for everybody, we're short 3/4 of that formula. We have 1/2 of what Axl used to be and no guitar hero (and I do love Ron the person and as a guitar player).
As a performer, Axl's generally fine considering his age. I'd give him even three quarters of his old self on a good night.
For the record, I don't have a problem with Axl using the name, personally. Just that he treats the outfit like it's his solo project.

]I totally get how you feel even if I don't agree with that being a good thing. Russ isn't the only one that felt this way, so I'm not picking on him...I just don't understand what someone saw that made them think
found guys I viewed to be the attitude, style and presence of Guns N' Roses.
That is what I don't get.
Fact of the matter is, the band called Guns N' Roses today represents a totally different set of views, values, and (up to a degree) different musical directions than the GNR which existed in '87, '91, etc. A new generation of fans of the music (new and old) discovers the band mainly through how it presents itself today, and obviously relate to it as an Axl show.
The attitude, style and presence quip is a bit complicated to me as well, as I personally feel one is dealing with two completely different animals, regardless which of the lineups is preferred. Had Slash and Duff stayed with the band, it would be easier to draw comparisons to the days gone past, as the core unit would still be the same.
Nowadays, I do find Axl to generally have more style than he once did, the presence is usually there... As for the attitude, well, let's not go to his tweets. Even so Buzz, just a friendly advice. This lineup (or any lineup post-96) will never meet your standards of GNR, simply because we're not dealing with a band you grew up with and learned to identify as Guns N' Roses.
The name still exists, a band records and tours underneath it, so the public conception is that GNR is still alive and well with Axl in the helm. They do get associated with the past and the efforts of other people, but that's what you get with brand names. Henry Ford made the Model T back in the day, but he wouldn't have dreamt his name would one day be on the hood of a Mustang. But both are Fords as such.
Even if performing artists are more people-centered than car manufacturers, the common Joe still remembers only two people from the original band, Axl and Slash. Today, Slash is gone and someone else is noodling. Unfortunate, but that is the case with many bands out there, who've established their reputations before the personnel swaps.
The real downer with this band is that it's so heavily Axl-centered in its outlook, there's simply no-one to stand up to what Slash once represented. Buckethead, like his image or not, made a great foil to both Axl and Slash, and played a mean guitar to boot. Had he stuck, the touring band would've had a whole lot more identity once Axl came adjusted with the middle-aged frontman robes.
By far and wide, GNR was viewed as a two-man show. If people would have Bucket to cling onto, it wouldn't be all about Axl, it would also be that strange guy who plays the Slash tunes in a different, yet affable fashion. Now we've got Ron, who (despite all his good graces) is still not Slash nor Bucket; not a larger-than-life guitar hero, but a regular guy who goes to work every night he goes on stage.
"Attitude, style and presence of Guns N' Roses."
I'll personally define that one with a ferocious frontman and an eye-catching guitar hero.
