#1711 Re: Guns N' Roses » what does Axl/GNR have to, to regain your interest 100% » 824 weeks ago

In order.

# Release a new album from the CD sessions.

# Axl going into the creation process and actually explaining some things / songs as they happened. Doesn't have to be negative and how everybody's trying to stab him in the back; just his view on the whole journey.

# Put the Beavan mixes up in MySpace or wherever. Fuck the remixes - you have enough versions already.

At the time, Axl sounded a bit like he had no idea.

What is Brains status?

I think he's doing alright.

[He's remixing Shackler, to be precise.]

Maybe I should check. - Axl chat, December '08

Is Brain in the band?

Last I checked. Brain works on several things with Guns either from his home or in the studio. - Spinner, 02/27/09

[You finally heard the club mix, huh?]

I just did a remix of 'Shackler'™s,"  made it kind of more club. And I think he wants to put out a remix album of some of the other songs we did. - Brain, Modern Drummer 05/09

[Three songs by Brain so far.]

The Shackler Club Mix was mixed by Sean Beresford, who's mostly worked with Third Eye Blind.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

My friend Brain is the drummer for Guns N'™ Roses (he also used to be the drummer for Primus). He wrote two of the songs on the new Guns N'™ Roses record 'Chinese Democracy" released late last year.

He and his musical collaborator Melissa Reese worked up a hip hop/club version of the song 'Shackler'™s Revenge" with programmed beats and additional loops and cool sounds. They asked me to mix it. I'™ve been chipping away at it for a few weeks over the Christmas holidays and finally I think it is done. I'™m quite happy with how it turned out, it is pretty wacky though!

(later, sometime in Febraury) Brain called to say that Axl Rose finally heard the remix and really likes it. Yay!...

- Blighty Sound

His resume also carries a mention of the track.

11/2008 - 12/2008 - Guns N Roses - Shackler's Revenge club remix
Pro Tools editor, mixer

Editing and mixing of  a Guns N Roses track off the recent Chinese Democracy record. This is a club remix of the song Shackler's Revenge written by Brain. Beatz by Brain and Melissa.

Funny that, I was listening to Sepultura's Roots the other night and found myself thinking how fluently Calavera and the boys had adopted the traditional Samba elements to their music. The new set of percussion brought up a whole new layer in the otherwise already-grounded groove rock of Chaos AD. These guys knew the basics of what they were doing, and weren't afraid to open the melting pot and amalgamate completely different elements to their established sound.

Try listening to the epic Ratamahatta and despite what you might think of the genre itself, you'll probably catch a page from Axl's book. In principle, Sepultura is pulling as a unit towards a direction Axl wanted to pull with the Slash-era Guns. The basics of what makes a vintage Guns/Sepultura/whatever track, a drastic departure, a cultural blender, a potpourri served with a wall of sound.

What makes Roots a more coherent album than CD (the only reasonable comparison) is the fact that CD is three albums on top of their each other, whereas Roots is just, well, Roots. Sepultura goes tribal, , claiming their basic confidence in the underlying rhythm tracks to go off the handle with the bells and whistles. The resulting album was a breath of air even fresher than the preceding Chaos AD.

Useless speculation: In a way, Axl might've been right at that point in time to call in a change. Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden and Nirvana had come and gone in a matter of years, blowing the dust of hardened hairspray off the DJ booths in one decisive whirl. Guns would've done well to just say, 'Fuck it', and do an amazingly ambitious album, betraying their Sunset Strip roots and influences.

Going Queen? Why not - Queen Industrial. Downtune the guitars a bit and play sacrilege on those Slash blues notes by running through some FX before committing them to the mix. Guns would've remained valid, interesting and stable, even if the album would've been derided by critics both then and now.

But once you get all those years back on one album, it's not as fun as it might sound. Trick is, it's still just one CD. Whoever saw the production of that album as a monument to the dying medium remains to get a kick out of the abbreviation, tho, so it's not a total loss.

It does seem a long way to go to only play one gig and not do some sort of Aussie tour.  Presumably the money being thrown at them by the V8 super cars makes a one off gig worthwhile.

Yup,

Snubbing on Melbourne is the over-excited Ax going on against his niche critics, who raise hell over a one-off show instead of an Aussie tour. Too bad most of the people reading the tweets haven't bothered with the original potshot to begin with. Note, Ax, names. Link up the story for proper context.

Ax alarmed by false fire means there's a ring of truth to it, again. In general, Oz promoters oft do get the short shrift and Guns aren't alone in generally overlooking and 'snubbing' them. Has happened before in the biz side of things and will unfortunately keep happening, given the remote geographic location, for one.

Then again, $1M is big money and covers a lot of overhead. Guns did the 1st European leg this year to attend Helsinki Live, mainly, as the fees were right up there. There may be a contractual clause to withhold from one-off Aussie shows in 2010, as the promoters realize people who'd like to see just the Guns would skip the wheels and head to places like Perth,  Adelaide and Melbourne.

I can't blame Play for saying it out loud, tho. Big-time events rob fans of proper arena shows, which is a far more convenient way to experience the Guns. That and the statute of limitations likely imposed by the contract are big things to swallow just for the hell of it. But then again, Ax can do no wrong.

Peanuts.

The aborted RIR-Lisboa show in 2004 was announced around six months in advance.

There was a certain WTF thing in the air in RIR3. Tell I dreamt it all, but I have a distinct memory of a troupe of Brazilian dancers entering the stage at some point. Would've nicely gone in line with the circus, but for Axl's sake, I wish that's just fuzzy memory.

The 2002 tour, particularly the Albany rant and the Vancouver/Philly cancelations.

The 2004 Buckethead press release. [And what the hell, MOST press releases by GNR in recent memory.]

13 Tuesdays.

The Slash, cancer interview.
