There was absolutely like a 1 in a 1,000 chance of "Guns" being "Guns". But I do think that the name provided things to Axl, and I think it gave him a push. Or at least he thinks so. It's hard to know how it would have played out. I do think the reunion issue would be a larger shadow if there was no "Guns" and Axl Rose was just touring as W Axl Rose. He wouldn't have the "this isn't Guns!" stigma, but I think he'd have other things. Damned if he did, damned if he didn't.
He might have been helped had he put out a solo record instead of laboring to either get the old band to work, or instead of trying to build a new band. Even if he ended up building a new band, at least he could have tried some things out as a solo record and did some solo shows.
Going from the zenith of popularity of the early 90's to zero in new millennium wasn't going to work out for ANYONE. A sacrificial lamb of a solo project in the mid to late 90's would have probably been good for all involved.

Wow, he does?
PM me info about that bootleg.
Oh..
Sometimes I could get even,
sometimes I could give it up.
Sometimes I could give,
sometimes I never give a fuck.

It is fascinating, looking at Best Buy's condition and MySpace's position. MySpace was clearly on the outs as not being cool anymore. In 2006? It was passable. Best Buy's problems have only gotten worse since then. If they did Facebook or had a decent website and released (a) track out, like a single (countdown was pretty cool), it would have been seen by more likely buyers.
If they went with WalMart, they wouldn't have probably gotten the big check, but they would have pushed a ton more units, no doubt. WalMart has way more traffic, more impulse buying setups near the door... shoot, they could have even put a real bicycle up against a cardboard wall for the display.

I think that mostly has to do with his sleep schedule. Night owls usually have problems...you really are tied to the sun and night. Short of more evidence about Axl, who knows. He's doing very well, but it's not surprising he's not really skinny.
I saw this article to explain what I've read/heard from people:

Kinda like Roger Waters being a "terrible bassist and singer" by his own admission and being half tone deaf.
I think Weezer had the catchier hooks...ha.

Prostitute, as it was, not a first single.

Better was definitely the song where, post 2002, we all nodded and said "Ahh, he can sing". It's also a song you can play and people would say "ooh, this is what he was doing - this is different, but it's also good."
Sorry sort of sets a tone and tells a story. More of a statement. "Sorry, but Axl's Not Apologizing" ..you can hear that buzzline in the air. But no press, interviews, and they didn't put that out as a single. The song could even been radio and TMZ fodder about it 'being about Slash?'.
What also hurt was NO music videos, of any sort, being out. That knocked out YouTube and Facebook. MySpace streaming was a dead-end and it didn't facilitate building or exploiting curiosity, it just lost the plot.
Axl didn't even do the modern equivalent of a MTV fax explaining the songs or album until forum chats, which, uh, aren't the same thing and happened way too late.
