#11 Re: Guns N' Roses » GNR.FM | Destruction Is Coming » 374 weeks ago

As far as a Lies remaster/SE thing goes, my memory ain't what it used to be. I forget where I read it... I'm thinking The Most Dangerous Band In The World by Mick Wall maybe, but I specifically remember reading that the session(s) that were actually used on the acoustic half of GN'R Lies actually replaced the original recordings they did that, (someone) claimed, pissed all over the tracks that were released. So they'll definitely do a separate thing for it. No doubt in my mind.

I'd love to be able to afford the big AFD box.
Truly.
My all time favorite album.
But Jesus Christ.  Maybe if I hadn't already spent at least that much money before the internet was a thing buying/replacing Appetite on vinyl, cassette and compact disc...
It makes me kinda feel bad, really. At 39 years old, I should have enough money in the fucking bank where I could blow a grand on something like this without completely fucking myself.
It's cool the vault is finally getting officially emptied, though. Even if they're getting all Gene Simmons-y about it. They're squeezing every possible penny they can out of us, and they couldn't even bother to put together an E.P. of new shit together after 2 years on the road. Every single one of their contemporaries are still writing and recording, in addition to celebrating their past.
The Metallica Remasters are the perfect example of what they should have done (pricing too), but they don't have the back catalog Tallica has, so they really have to milk this one.
I'm a broken record, but after the great show I attended 2 years ago, where I dropped almost $400 between tickets and merch, I'm done giving this band my money until they release newly recorded music. I don't care when it was written, I just want tracks I've never heard.
Think A Different Kind Of Truth...
Sure, Ed wrote the shit 40 years ago, but it was new to us, right?
Between 1985-2018 There must be a dozen tracks already written that the current lineup could bang out with Nick Raskulinecz or someone in a couple of months, right?
What I want is a Year And A Half style  making of UYI doc.
I want the UYI demos with Adler. (Shit, I want every track with Adler... I want him in the current lineup.)
What I want is a Live Era Box. With DVDs/CDs of full shows from '85-93
Same goes for 2001-2008
I want TSI with Izzy.
I want the Nu-GNR AFD.
I want 2000 Intentions.
Give me all the songs/demos recorded between 1994 and 2008.
What I want is proof that any of the drama was worth it.
I've worshiped this band since I was 13 years old.
There was a time when I thought these guys had some integrity, and the older I get, the more perspective I gain. The more I see...
Even back then. Hindsight.
What I want is any fucking indication that any of it...
The break-up.
The reunion.
Really anything even remotely associated with Guns N' Roses... From the beginning...
Has been about anything other than fucking money.
I don't have much hope.

Subhuman Race and Corabi Crue were artistic triumphs in an era where a ton of hair bands were writing shitty grunge albums to try and stay relevant during a major shift in rock. They all sold like shit. And, because of that, the Skids (for all intents and purposes) broke up, and Crue's label (who just re-signed them for a TON of money) made them fire John Corabi (who was infinitely better that the whiny, no talent hack he replaced) and go crawling back to Vince Neil. It's too bad. Both records were diamonds buried in a huge pile of dog shit. Grunge fans hated them because they thought they were pandering, and hair band fans hated them because.. well... They also thought they were pandering. Had both camps listened with open minds, they may have done well, but the minds were made up long before a note was heard, and they tanked.

I maintain that those 2 albums, at least, were wayyyy ahead of their time, and just evolution, and if they were released 20 years later, they'd be universally praised.

Every irrelevant thing Crue has recorded since '94 with Neil was/is fucking pandering.
Blatant nostalgia cash grabbing.
Dog Eat Dog, Native Tongue, Shadowlife, Slang, and Hear in the Now Frontier were grunge pandering. Shit on them. Leave this album alone.

It's just a shame that they couldn't hold it together long enough to put out more quality songs like Quicksand Jesus, In A Darkened Room and Wasted Time. Those songs are stellar, as is most of the Slave to the Grind album

It really is amazing in hindsight how quick the bottom dropped out of Skid Row. Less than two years.

Slave was an odd fork in the road in front of them at the worst possible moment. The debut sold like hot cakes 89-90 and when they released Slave, it was going in a much harder, serious direction and it lost them more than half their audience. being the opener on hot tours masked this fact temporarily.  A year later, they release that crap B-Side Ourselves EP that was dead on arrival. Literally nobody cared.

I'm amazed that they even bothered with Subhuman Race. MTV wasn't going to touch it and neither was radio.

edit: Isn't it amazing how much longer two years was back then?

I actually really love  Subhuman Race.
Unlike every other hair band trying to get grungy,  they made a very heavy record, clearly influenced by their recent tour with Pantera. This and the Corabi Crud record are wayyyyyy underappreciated.
Native Tongue it wasn't.
I'm pretty sure I wrote  2,000 word essay in the comment section of the full album on YouTube. I'll see if I can find "The Case For Subhuman Race" by Furbush later.
You guys know how I get.
Sigh.

I misread this, and came up with the coolest idea in the process.
The Not In This Lifetime tour?
How about the new record being called "Out Of The Question"?

Appetite For Destruction
Use Your Illusion
Out Of The Question.
Perfect.

I already knew all of those lol

There were rumors GNR was playing the VMAs so I remember all of the gnr forums watching, then when it started the band sounded amazing, and Axls opening scream was amazing then he opened his mouth to sing and everyone was in horror and shock.

Then the fuckery began.

Dude...
I wasn't even internet capable at home. I had zero clue.
It was in the local newspaper the next day. I bought the paper on my way to work, and read it during my lunch break.
I completely marked out and when I left work, I immediately went to Wal-Mart, bought a blank VHS, went home, popped that puppy into my VCR, and waited for the replay.
I shit you not.
I recorded it. And must have wore out that tape over the next few years. A kid at work had what he called "The Leaked Chinese Democracy" that he downloaded from Napster or some shit, and burned me a copy of what was, essentially demos and live shit with OMG to boot.
Better
TWAT
IRS
Catcher
The Blues
CD
RATB
Silkworms
OMG

My fucking god. Popping that CD into my car stereo and hearing Better for the first time was like a religious experience.
Imagine.
Remember?
I didn't even get a PC/ an internet connection for like...2 or 3 more years.
But that VMA tape and bootleg CD got me through.
I still have the CD in my truck.

I was entranced by Madagascar, Buckethead, and Axl looking like a Neo Tokyo rockstar.

I hope to hear the unreleased Chinese Democracy / CD2 material some day but will be forever let down we didn't get many long years of collaboration between pseudo-asian Axl and space alien Finck and technobot Buckethead.

The things we could've done together.

I realize that I'm wayyyy late on this thread, and this post, but fuck it.

I've said it a Brazilian times. That VMA performance/ band gets shit on a bunch by casuals and some hardcores, but that band was a versatile fucking monster that should have put out at least 4 records. As prolific and brilliant as Bucket/Brain are?  Guns 2.0 would have turned all kids of heads.

The eclectic, soulful shredding of Bucket, with Fortus holding down the traditional blues based fiddlin'. Robin's unique industrial punk vibe?
The rhythm section from Hell, Dizzy Fucking Reed... The douche canoe on the keytar on stage right and Uncle Anime Axl?
It was quite the beast that was put together, and I didn't really care how gassed Axl was at the VMAs... I was sooo pumped. Maddy was EPIC.

He was hitting the notes, mannnn... "AHHHH FREE FROM ALLL THE CHAINS"

Round One indeed.

That shot of Buckethead in a typhoon of confetti... Shredding with one hand, swingin' a fuckin' Num Chuck bucket with the other... His head cocked to the side?

All the yesses.
I worshipped the old band, but that band was so like... What the fuck? That I was on board. They kicked soo much ass.

CD should have dropped 2 weeks after that show as a 4 album box set or separately (CD1, 2, 3 and 4) It would have one upped UYI 1 and 2 debuting as the top two records, by being the first band to have the top FOUR albums on the charts.

Could you imagine?
I salivate at the thought.
They would have fucked shit up.
PS... I dunno if anyone has mentioned it, but we need a Melissa emoji.

This album is one of the worst piles of shit I have heard in a long time if not the worst. Metallica should hang it up and save their legacy.

There comes a time when washed-up bands and artists should stop recording just because they can, does n`t mean they should. Shitallica is a prime example.

No.

Taste is subjective, and while this ain't Re-Ride The Lightening, you clearly never heard LuLu.

This is a damned good album.  Replace Murder One with Lords Of Summer, put the whole thing on one disc and shorten a couple of tracks, and this goes from being a solid 8/10 to a 9.5.

Without going into the long version of my rant, I have appreciated all of this bands records for different reasons. (The lone exception beng the collaboration with Lou Reed. That was a kiddie pool filled with dirty diapers) I even initially loved St. Anger the first time I heard it, because, despite it's glaring faults, it had an energy and aggression that had been missing for quite some time.

The first 4 records ( I'll even say 5) were Metallica. Everything after that was Tallica. Death Magnetic was a decent mash-up of both bands. Hardwired... To Self-Destruct's overall flow and cohesion exposes how contrived and fan-service-y Magnetic actually sounds, and I went from really digging it for years, to now. It's uncomfortable to listen to.

This is the sound of them finally being confident again. Halo On Fire, Bone, Am I Savage?, Moth... <3 I've seen other people dig songs I'm indifferent towards and some people hate songs I love. That's a good signn.

Between both discs there's something any past or present Metallica fan can get into.
Unless they're a trolling cunt.

The album leaked today. Good stuff. Some meh stuff and Spit Out The Bone. The song that every track on Death Magnetic wishes it was. Holy fucking HELL. That track could hang with ANY of the pre Black Album stuff. ANY of it.

Word is born.

Enjoy, kids.

I fucked up.

I was going to click Michelle but clicked Brownstone instead. They're samesies in my ears, but the former had no love.
