#231 Re: The Sunset Strip » New Down Song played » 712 weeks ago

Former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo's band Down will release a six-song EP, appropriately titled EP ONE, on September 18th. The first single, "Witchtripper," premiered exclusively here, finds a typically aggressive Anselmo vocal against a twisting, grinding musical backdrop.

Anselmo tells Rolling Stone that like the well-known Pantera songs "Fucking Hostile" and "Psycho Holiday," "Witchtripper" was a song title he had to be goaded into. "Somebody would suggest to me, 'Hey, man, that might make a killer song title.' And at the time I'm like, 'You're out of your fucking mind. There's no way I'm gonna call a song 'Witchtripper,'" he says.

But after digging the riff created by Down guitarist Pepper Keenan and drummer Jimmy Bower, Anselmo decided to give them what they wanted. "I was like, 'OK, check this out, you dicks. 'Witchtripper' you want, 'Witchtripper' you will get,'" he says. "I laid it on them, and sure enough, they were right – it worked, as usual. So there goes the genius of Phil Anselmo. Always doubting, and I'm the last one to get it," he adds, laughing.

EP ONE marks the first new music from the band since 2007's Down III: Over the Under. In the meantime Anselmo has kept himself plenty busy, touring, running his Housecore Records label and working on a solo album. As a result, he decided to let the Down music come organically.

"I have not really put too much pressure on myself with Down, and I think that's the best approach," he says. "Right now I'm looking forward to the public's consumption and letting them hear it. I'm not sure if it's gonna break any ground. I never put any expectation on any friggin' record I do," he says. "We didn't overanalyze anything. We just let the songs kind of unfold, and once it felt right, there was no reason to go back."

Going back to the title, EP ONE is apt because the group plans to release four EPs in total, with the second collection of songs due early next year, around the time of a planned U.S. tour. EPs three and four are scheduled for later in 2013. At least that's the plan, but don't hold Anselmo to that.

"The worst thing anyone could do is to count on Down for holding a bargain on timelines," he says. "All I can say is expect it. I'm sure it'll happen, we haven't let you down before."

Anselmo's solo project will kick off with a split single with his Housecore act Warbeast. "I'm gonna put two songs on a split, basically to prompt both of our full-lengths that are coming out later in the year or maybe early, early next year. Maybe that's more the case with my record," he says.

Talking about the solo record, he laughs. "Dude, it's like a nervous-wreck record," he says. "It's very herky-jerky, man. Very extreme, I guess."

Between the solo album and the EPs, there's a lot of new Anselmo music on the way. But his past is being celebrated as well, with reissues, like the recent 20th anniversary edition of Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power. For Anselmo, going back and listening to those songs two decades later has stirred up a lot of emotions.

"I do find myself surprised sometimes," he says. "Sometimes I'll feel, 'God, how pathetically shallow that is?' Or take a song like 'A New Level' – the lyrics are so freaking positive and so strong because I wrote them when I was in my strongest body and my most clear mind at that time, just surging, young and strong as I could possibly be.

"It kind of takes you back, and for a guy like me it's like, 'Jesus Christ, how could I have tripped over so many trip wires and stepped on so many minefields, when it sure sounds like I had it all down when I was 24 years old?'”

Just saw it a second time...

I think it surpasses TDK which was the gold standard IMO.
It also beats out The Avengers for best superhero movie of all time.

I love that Nolan did all of these movies his way... Sure, there were nods to the comic everywhere... subtle and otherwise... But he took the source material and turned it on it's ear and made everything original and his own... And it ALL worked... all 3 films. Brilliant.

Bane was great... Not good... GREAT.

I'm a lil' slow... I didn't see the Talia reveal/prison escape thing coming
The Blake/Robin/New Batman thing was genius...
"Fuck the comics... we'll do it like this"
I literally cried when they showed Alfred breaking down, and again, when the uncovered the statue.... And just about jumped out of my skin when the lady said Blake should go by his FULL name, "Robin"... I let the movie take me for a ride without getting nitpicky or nerdy about it, and had more goosebump/Oh Shit!!! moments than I've ever had in a movie. I thought it wrapped up the trilogy perfectly, while still leaving the door cracked for something going forward. The last half hour was perfect.

I didn't notice the thing about the pearls until my second viewing, either

... I was skeptical about Hathaway pulling off Selina Kyle.... But, she nailed it. I will still forever masturbate to Michelle Pfeiffer , though...

Batman(1990)..7.5/10 (at the time? 8.5/10.. It hasn't aged well)
Batman Returns..7/10
Batman Forever.. 4/10
Batman And Robin..3.5/10
Begins.. 8/10
TDK... 9/10
TDKR.. 9.1/10 16

I barely caught that conversation with Fox and I didn't want to bring it up because I thought maybe I got it wrong. However I am 100% that was Selina with Bruce at the end. I was thinking that maybe Alfred was just imagining her now as well. But the Fox conversation along with Selina in the end seems like they're all alive.

I also assert that the end doesn't necessarily mean "Happily Ever After", which I also tie into The Joker missing from the court scene.  When the Robin (or Night Wing?) reveal happens, it looked to me like he'd be taking Batman's place. So upon return to Gotham, Bruce and/or Selina would be assisting Robin/Night Wing with whatever bad shit is going down while they were gone.

As far as The Joker goes, from what we saw in the second movie, he doesn't give a rats ass about any sort of order. So assuming he was released, he wouldn't have had any interest in what goes on with "the good people of Gotham". I was thinking he would've headed straight out to cause some havoc. Which ties back into the Robin/Night Wing thing. By the time Bruce and Selina get back, who knows what they would have to help him clean up.

Oh and as far as IMAX goes, I will about 20 minutes from The Henry Ford Museum which has (I'm told) the biggest IMAX screen in the US at 84ft wide by 62ft tall. It's $13.25 to see it there and I'm not sure of their schedule but I really want to see it there ASAP.

Ok so do you think

if and when they do the Robin movie Christian Bale will be in it in sorta of an Alfred/Fox type role? Or do you think he'd reprise his role as Batman in kind of a cameo?

I guess the city of Gotham

saw Batman die so is that it? Batman is done but Bruce lives on?

The first part. I think

Hidden Text:

that if there ever is a Robin or 'next movie' of any sort, it'll feature a cameo or full on appearance from Bale as Bruce but not Batman.

And... that would throw off any civilians who might have guessed that Wayne was Batman

Only thing I'm kinda annoyed at, is that Bane's voice is really hard to understand in some parts, and others it's clear as a bell. Some points I was really scratching my head at what he said.

I found audio levels a bit out of whack throughout anyway, where the background music overpowered the dialogue. But I saw it in a new cinema that boasted BIG SCREEN, BIG SOUND, and the bass was a bit ridiculous, so I'm not faulting the film entirely for that.

I LOVED how Bane completely brings the city to it's knees, trapping the cops underground, and the rest of the city at hostage if they tried to leave.

The Joker was a badass, but Bane brought it to a whole another level, and there were times watching that I felt unease about how badly he was fucking the city up, and beating the shit outta Batman almost breaking his back.

One thing that confused me, is how did Bane find out Bruce was Batman?
I know he had Commissioner Gordon's speech which revealed the truth about Harvey, but there was no mention that Batman was Bruce Wayne, and even Commissioner Gordon only adds it up that Bruce is Batman, right at the end

But man, what a ride. Can't wait to see it again!

You gotta remember... Bane IS the league of shadows... talia too... they ALL know Bruce is Batman, dude...

Yeah, those Loose Change guys are definitely the end all be all experts. Who are they again?

"Please, go watch our movie. Go see our proof on our website. The coroner won't talk to us, so he's a liar too!!!"

Again, they're saying the same bullshit. Because they keep saying it over and over again, doesn't make it true. THEY GOT SCHOOLED, because they had nothing REAL to back up their claims. They don't want to hear from ANYONE who disagrees with them. It's amazing; everyone is lying. Aren't they making money off 9/11? Their conspiracies, to be exact? And they're attacking PM? Plus, the PM guys handled themselves a lot better than two college kids acting like assholes, laughing, interrupting them and calling them liars.

Popular Mechanics has updated their review and taken on every NEW theory that pops up.

The Loose Change guys aren't offering evidence, just conjecture. Please, dude. I can't believe I wasted my time watching that crap.

Here are better opitcal illusions.

Yeah, Loose Change got schooled by popular mechanics.

I agree with you about military spending and healthcare and all that, our military can't be touched with how beef it is, but the black helicopter stuff... It's like a few steps away from the Timothy Mcvay's view of the world.

Yeah... Schooled. Watch all of the parts... They do more back peddling about "We're not politicians or experts, and I know you have an actual statement from that guy... But... He said something ELSE to us... We've seen video that nobody else on Earth has fucking access too..." They be slangin' bullshit. It's obvious...

I'll assume that the folks that don't think my argument has any basis in reality haven't seen this... Apologies if you have, and I'll find much more... It's been a while since I got deep into this, but this is where to start:

I think it's almost comically insane that one would be like "Who Cares?" about the gov't spending the amount of money it does on the military and foreign occupations, but will freak the fuck out when someone suggests spending a fraction of that on Medicare for every working US citizen.

Did I say who cares?  There's a difference between "who cares?" and supporting the military.  I'd rather not be in some of the places we are, but we're there for a reason, and it's not always because we want to be.  Often it's that we need to be.  If we're going to spend money, the military/defense is a good place to do it.

You want your free handout?  Go serve in the military first, then come back and talk to me about how you deserve to have taxpayers pay for your healthcare.  I'd be willing to listen to you then.  Lets see how many freeloaders we have then.  But that's obviously way off topic.

Once my brain gets into "Rant Mode"... 16

It wasn't specifically aimed at anyone.

There's an astronomical difference between "support the military" and throwing bails of money at it. We wouldn't NEED to spend that kinda money on "defense" if our elected officials didn't feel the need to take over every nation on Earth they see as a "potential threat". Once you look into how much of that money is wasted and/or turns up missing...  It's downright appalling.

And "handouts"?

If we spent half the money on the military that we do now, we'd still have the biggest and most powerful military in the world BY FAR.... And have enough cheese to provide amazing, free healthcare to every man, woman and child in North America... But, I was only suggesting we give it to every tax payer... So it ain't really a handout, bub...
