I've always loved the lyrics to this one. Yes they are rather "immature" but they are honest and dripping with venom. Axl's honesty is his strongpoint as a songwriter. I don't detect much difference in the demo, but the melancholy little intro they added live 2009-2014 (I haven't heard a NITL version, so I don't know if it's still there or not) is great.

Hopefully on 7/31 they play the new Hardschool so we can have a Wtf happened to Hardschool thread. I wonder how many will prefer the demo's instrumental to the Slash version.

Don't care for it. The "all my salvation" part is repetitive and grating. Guitars are definitely better on the demo.

Beautiful melodies, great lyrics and one of Axl's best outros. I prefer the album version because it doesn't fadeout and I actually like Ron's solo.

Never liked this song or got the hype. It's individual parts are good (besides the incredibly flat chorus) but feel pasted together and do not flow at all. I also prefer Robin's solo to Bucket's, which I find to be all flash and very overrated.

No one said every ballad is about Slash. TWAT/TIL are obviously about Stephanie. SOD is about Slash, and it isn't a love song.

Who writes a love song about some you detested? No one. Most likely about a past love affair. Listen to Hardschool, Now that's about Slash!

It is not a love song, at least not the romantic kind. Every line in the song is something Axl has said about Slash in one way or another in interviews after the breakup.

Always liked this song. It reminds me of Garbage's The World Is Not Enough, a song I have a strong nostalgic connection to. I prefer the album version as I feel it benefits from the thicker production.

When I first listened to CD in 2008 this was one of the most bland, skippable tracks. When I heard the 2001/2002 versions I was like wow, this was one of the best and it was butchered. Finally after the Village leaks I have a proper studio version and it easily moves from one of the 5 weakest tracks on CD to one of the 5 best. The added guitars and the spooky keyboards in the chorus really take the song from 5 to 10. Also, another one of Axl's best lyrics and outros ("What this means to me"...he's really pouring his heart out there).

And the song is definitely about Slash, when you read his 2000 Rolling Stone interview it becomes 100% clear.

Amazing song, one of Axl's top 5 best lyrically. I just have one complaint: I wish Axl didn't sing over all of Robin's outro solo. The latter half, yes, but the "na na na" part during the first part was unnecessary.
