I dont believe Axl is mentally ill. I have looked at his behaviour over the years, heard his lyrics, read the accounts of people around him and have for some time I have suspected him as being on the autistic spectrum.
I could write a bloody book explaining why I suspect this. I also think he got diagnosed during the years in the wilderness and to me this explains why people around him are much more understanding of his unusual behaviour nowadays.
Even if he isnt, I'd still wager he has been diagnosed with a neurological condition rather than a mental illness.

Mabye I'm cheating, I play madagascar on vinyl, I have a Technics 1210 turntable so I can speed up and slow down songs with the pitch adjustment.
I play Maddy at a higher tempo and it sounds sweet. I'm used to Axls vocals now, but I agree the definitive version for me as well is Rio. That said I thought the 02 version was pretty sweet as well. I would love to here Maddy from the lost Vegas show, where no audio exists, I wonder what stage Axls voice was at at that show, a year after Rio.
I was hoping for more interesting drumming during the bridge on the album, it just chugs along, and the guitar solo should be higher in the mix than the samples and strings. If that section was mixed better it would transform the song.
I dont get the continued love for TWAT, yes Buckets solo is glorious, truly one of the most enjoyable I've heard in my life. I listened last night through headphones, smoking some green, and my ears were more intuned than ever. Its a flawless solo and one that makes you inspired to pick up the guitar to try emulate him.
But apart from that? C'mon the first half of that song is basically fucking drivel. I cant bear that shite anymore, and practically skip that song all the time.

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.
Had no idea what it was about, was plenty suprised.
Some scenes were utter cheese and cringeworthy, that sword fight had me punching the wall in frustrating.
And that utter twat who plays his son does my brain in, same with Transformers, he is beyond irritating. ThatsafaceIdahappilyapuncha!

I wanted ITW out early but you all picked off my favourites first. Now I circle the sky waiting to pick off the weak ones.
4 of the ones left I'd happily bin before mulling over the 2 remaining.

... from Chinese Democracy that you would use as an example to introduce someone curious, but completely ignorant of the Great Chinese Democracy Charade.
Your only allowed one choice and explain why.
I nominate Madagascar.
I think the opening melody is very beautiful and haunting at the same time. It gives the impression that something special is about to unfold and it draws you in and holds your attention.
The lyrics are quite reflective and sombre but still hold that defiant tone that the mind subconsiously associates with the once mighty Guns N' Roses.
On this song I believe Axl sounds like the Axl of yore (Illusion era anyway) and still has that timber shivering feral howl, but I also like how he never tried to disguise his sometimes creaking voice - he is older now and he is unafraid to reveal that fact on this track. Forgiving him for the odd little waver in his voice in the beginning pays off big time by the outro of the song as he roars back in to the crescendo with no trace of age or weariness.
The guitars are pretty awesome, if a little drowned in all the effects going on around them, but still have have that sting in the tail that the old songs had in abundance. Despite the best attempts of the many soulful melodies to lighten the atmosphere, this song is heavy. People tend to like their GN'R heavy, if it still has catchy tune of course.
Overall for me this song sounds pretty much like how I imagined 21st century GN'R would sound and everyone I have played it for yet has unanimously declared it pretty fucking awesome.

I dont think Skippys posts are weak, pretty interesting actually, I like a bit of speculation with my breakfast in the morning
So in summary, Axl is a bit of a dick??

Never seen this posted for the new documentry "Iron Maiden: Flight 666"
I love this band, the energy they still have for playing live is incredible considering how often they tour and how long they have been in the game.
I bought Bruce Dickinsons "My Chemical Wedding" the other day, its a bloody good album!

Awsome read, I had to tackle it in a couple of sittings though. Still a bit fuzzy on the "cycle" concept, but 10/10 for originality.
I also loved your desciption of Madagascar and I still find the original performance chilling and moving. It is still my favourite song on the album though even with the power chords, I find the flaws of the album version are typical of the whole album - moments of sheer brilliance are overshadowed by unneccecary indulgance.
Its also a sad read in a way, instead of rejuvinating the online community this release has signalled the end of the line for many people, yourself one of them obviously.
I like the idea of taking a holiday from the boards, it might help focus on the music again instead of the BS surrounding the band. I might just look out for news of a tour or album appearing in my newspaper instead of checking the depressing fan boards every other day.
