It's going to be real ugly if Brian comes out and says he's got the problem solved and is ready to tour and record again.

It depends.

Brian's going to need a month or two to come up with a solution and to work things out with Angus.
Axl's going to be touring with Guns for the summer, so he'll vacate the frontman spot.
AC/DC may want to reschedule those NA dates earlier than September - with Brian, they could.

Of course, if Angus snubs Brian in favor of Axl in the autumn, that would be... awkward.

Likely it's going to be Axl/DC until mid-June. After that, Guns tour.

If Brian gets well in the coming months, the most logical choice would be to reinstate him for the NA leg.

In that case, Axl would simply bow out after the European leg. But this will be Angus' call to make.

And Brian's hearing-loss was a mea culpa? Plot thickens.

In an interview with US radio broadcaster Howard Stern, Johnson told him that 36 years as the lead singer of rock's possibly loudest band was not the reason for his deafness.

'I’ve got hearing loss in me left ear. I didn’t get it from music,' he told Stern. 'I got it from sitting in a race car too long without ear plugs.

'I heard my ear drum burst, because I forgot to put me plugs in under my helmet. That’s how it happened. Music had nothing to do with it.'

...

Brian Johnson told Howard Stern that the occasion on which his eardrum burst, he felt dizzy and when he removed his racing helmet he found blood from his ear.

'It’s just like a tininess, like tinnitus or something,' Johnson told Stern in 2014, saying it didn’t slow him down and that 'you forget about it after a week'.

Yup. It's officially the biggest item since the HOB 01/01/01 Japanese DVD, which was, apparently, all but released.

What makes this show further legendary is that metatarsal. Hard to watch it without thinking about the increasing heat in Axl's foot.

Baz has taken a lot of flack lately. A review of his May Day show in Atlanta.

After another set of sleepy tracks including a really, again, off key rendition of “18 & Life”, the real show stopper was “I Remember You.” Not because it was good but because it was such a train wreck. Guitarist Brent Woods evidently thought it would be cool to have his roadie put his electric guitar on him just in time for the intro to go electric.

In other words, he did the acoustic part and then his roadie came out and put an electric on him to try and make a cool transition but his acoustic was on a stand and blocking the pedals so he couldn’t get to the pedals to go electric in time and was scurrying like a frantic rat trying to get out of a maze to get to his pedals. We were literally doubled over and laughing hysterically.

Then things took a turn for the even funnier when during “Slave to the Grind” the Bachster totally whacked himself in the head while swinging his microphone. I mean, really? This show is absolutely a total amateur hour.  Spinal Tap revisited.

Of course, Baz took it to social media, where he lashed out at the reviewer and other people who shared the original review.

Too bad he has to shoot his mouth to such a degree, as he just comes out looking like a douche.

I think 2000-2001 he was preparing his look for the album's release and tour, once he knew it wasn't happening "soon" he literally dressed generically casual for the tours.

I wonder what he will pull out of the bag next, after the last seven years of his "current" look. Must be more to come.

The next step, if there'll be one, would like tie up with a new album. He's still in 'hard rock nostalgia' mode and the added confidence could just make him hark back to 2010 with less stuff on to begin with. That'd follow through the same idea with more practicality.

If he get serious on an album, he'll soon look the part. Just how it is.

On a broader level, it's quite human to hide away into the hat and many others have done it, as APE said.
axl-rose-2010-03.jpg
Early 2010. Confidence. Aging with grace. A great jacket.

Note those huge rocks for rings. His latest fad has since developed into excessive jewelry. Amusingly, in the AC/DC interviews, any sleight of hand of his sounds like a friggin maracas. His choice, again, but you'd think they're less than practical on stage.

Another thing entirely from the above are the hat and the glasses. He was definitely hiding with them in 2011-14 and was also perhaps a bit embarrassed by his gut. Hence, big leather jackets - which must be hell to wear through a set, with all those lights and pyros. Costume change is understandable if you're drenched in sweat by all those layers you insist upon.

Axl's quite precious about his self-image. Pick any era of his career and you see a distinct generalized look. Unlike Bowie, who personalized each look, Axl just seems to throw stuff on himself to portray some particular corner of his mindscape. 2001 was the most phoned-in, there - sweatpants and unbuttoned shirts. He got the Rio plane at the nick of time due to emotional turmoil (you can imagine) and his apparel does suggest he saw the show as something of a work-out; he needs to overcome the challenge in order to further his cause. Hence, he gave the audience a very rudimentary Axl.

People did go on unnecessarily much about his weight, even then. I always thought the flack he got about his physical appearance contributed to the oversized jerseys. They were muu-muu-sized, at worst, and one thing they do particularly well is to cover up the body shape. Early on in '02, there was at least some form of consistency to this outfit. Before the VMAs and whatnot, the jerseys were more skimmed down, he had a bandanna and leather pants - a wholly Axl mash-up of clothing he somehow managed to get away with.

axl2002.jpg

There's a strange air of rock royalty in him, there. Dressing up for the occasion and making it feel right for the context. New band with a rough edge, waist down. The jersey can be read as 'team mate'. Throw in a nice jacket to bring it all together and wrap the olden days around your cornrows. I may be making excuses for his lack of taste, but whatever.

But the MVP went south by the infamous '02 tour. Sweatpants and sneakers, working his way through it. Jerseys got supersized, it seemed as if a part of him wanted to hide within them. They got paid a good deal of money for a spectacularly shoddy tour. This is one of the things bad management costed Axl. His comeback tour was scheduled around 5 times before the album was completed. Smart money would've kept them out doing festival shows and limited tours every other year during the CD production. But everybody aside Axl wanted to cash in on a tour and with ClearChannel, it was pretty obvious Axl had rather been home.

Duff wanted to hear him out. Always the team player.

And Axl got through the gig without costume changes? 16

It looks like a good time. People can be so self-destructive sometimes. Jesus Christ you know, it's fucking simple rock n' roll. Try to act the part as a fan too. Simple. It's a good time, not religion.

Yeah man, people who get pissed off at shit like this, jeez, lighten up and enjoy it, its a mad thing to happen and no-one could have ever predicted this a year ago, or ever tbh.  Just go with the flow and enjoy the damn show!

Yeah man. Like they take personal offense or something. Very rock n roll. Just grab a beer and enjoy yourselves. Fuck.

Plus,

There's more going on than just angry people online. They should listen to their man.

Because of the nature of Brian’s deafness, we knew that there was no easy fix. So you’ve got to then say, ‘what do we do here?’ The options were very limited and you think, if we just stop with all of this machinery it’s going to be a hell of a lot of legal entanglement…

Rock or Bust's name just got real. Axl saved their asses big time and he's sounded surprisingly protective on the gig. It sounded like he'd step down only for Brian.

Axl wrote:

Whatever they’re doing with Brian, that’s not my place to talk, that’s their business. Anybody else, I will slowly poison them!

Should be interesting. But fear not, as it has been pointed out by others here, AC/DC nowadays tours in about 5-year intervals - and they tour a new album. There's a theoretical chance, then, that Angus' last stand will be an album and a tour with Axl.

Meantime, Axl will wholly enjoy the fact that he's pulling one up on Slash, who did the warm-up shows as the returning guitar hero, while someone observed him from his throne. Once they hit the stadiums, Axl should be mobile again, with his voice and confidence all geared up.
