No arguing that point! 22

I honestly believe that this album won't follow the "normal" path many records follow.  I think the lack of promo, lack of Axl, lack of a video, etc hurt the initial sales.  HOWEVER, I do believe the better songs (Better, If The World, T.W.A.T., The Blues) will help this album.  It won't be another Dark Side of the Moon (which stayed on the charts an eternity) but I think it will fall off in sales but then have relatively high sales corresponding with the releases of singles like Better, The Blues, etc.  Of course IF these singles happen.  If there is more promo that will help and videos would do wonders.  Alot of fucking IFS there but I do think my theory will hold true.  We'll see soon.

#323 Re: Guns N' Roses » AXL goes AWOL » 910 weeks ago

It is odd that there has been no promo. Naysayers can argue all they want but it is a FACT that the lack of promo hurt the initial sales...no, it wasn't the music.  You have to HEAR the music for that to be the case and with no promo that isn't the reality.

I really wonder if Axl wasn't completely happy with Chinese Democracy. Sure he had talented musicians to work with but I wonder if they were ever truely able to "get" what he was aiming for.

Even though I DO believe the album will do well (I think we will see an unusual drop and rise situation with this album ending with decent sales) I think this idea holds weight Bono.

Still doesn't mean much to me.  My interest is the number of units sold within the first couple of months, in particular the first month.

How many would it have sold had it not been a Best Buy exclusive?  Best Buy isn't exactly on the same level as say a Wal-Mart.

I still say it will do better (by a million or so) than Contraband did when the smoke clears.  To me that's successful enough.  I never thought it would be the 10 million units sold like some people dreamed of.  I guesstimate it will sale 3-3.5 million copies.

Keep in mind that the target crowd will NOT be the downloaders like most of us, it will be the guys who still buy cds at Wally-World or wherever.  I was in Wal-Mart today buying some stuff (for fuck's sake STAY AWAY from Wal-Mart until after Xmas...it's HELL!!!) and a Forty-ish looking "good 'ol boy" was looking for the album.  This isn't over.

#325 Re: Guns N' Roses » Thoughts On "Excuses" » 910 weeks ago

No need for excuses until we see failure.  This isn't the popular opinion but I honestly don't see this as a commercial failure, at least not yet.  Kanye had a couple hundred more thousand sales BUT with his album being available everywhere whereas GNR had the Best Buy exclusive of course he would sale more.  He also has every teenager buying his ablum the first week at Wally World or wherever.  I don't have a problem wth the album making it or not because I (at least for the most part) like it.  I do think no Better video would be suicide and the lack of real promo was crazy but that doesn't mean much. We'll know by Christmas if it is a failure or not.  Right now nobody really knows anything.

Bottom line. No promo. People are over GNR. Music is not easily accessible, it's from a bygone era. First single not pushed.

But, it doesn't stop me from enjoying it. No one should. Its success or failure in no means affects how I look at CD. I like it. Doesn't mean I'm wrong, just means I still enjoy this style of music.

If sales and chart position and hit singles and industry awards affected my taste in music, then I must be a big fan of the one of the worst, shittiest artists ever: Buckethead. He has no singles, meager sales, even fewer awards and probably has never had an album chart.

Great fuckin' post man! 5  I agree 100% on this.  As far as failure I'd say we'll know within two months.  James hit it about right on his idea of second and third week numbers and their implications in my opinion.  In the end I LIKE the album and that's enough for me.  It's not a very weak "UYI III" and that's saying quite a bit.  I could take away a couple of songs I really don't like and still have a solid 12 track disc left.  Not too shabby.  If this album sales more than Contraband I think it did fine, if it sales less it didn't do great.  Either way I will enjoy it equally.

Wouldn't that be freakin' awesome (well...if we knew who the band was!) in reality it will probably be fuckin' Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers or the reunited N-Suck! 4

I'll be happy if somehow a Better video comes through. sad

Good post Neemo.  Any of you that have known me over the years know I am a realist and hardly a nut swinger but calling it a failure now is silly.  NO I DO NOT think the Best Buy exclusive was smart, sorry...but that's the way I see it.  To me all an exclusive means is less sales.  Just an opinion.  I will tell you again the SAME THING I said BEFORE the numbers...the first week isn't what is crucial.  The second week means more to me and the first couple months the absolute most.  This album may fail but it hasn't yet and I don't expect it to.  I ABSOLUTELY expect it to sale 3 million copies (or real close to this number) before all is said and done.

The next couple of week's sales will be what I am REALLY interested in.  The exclusive Best Buy deal was a bad idea from the beginning.  In many ways however that's not that bad of a showing.  Was Contraband a one-chain exclusive?  Is Kanye competing on the same playing ground?  No, it will be the next few weeks that really tell us how successful (or not) Chinese Democracy really will be.  The fact it sold 50k more than Contraband would only be disappointing (imo) if it were not for the Best Buy exclusive release crap.
