A few days ago I did a listen to two versions of the title track from these discs, the skwerl leak, and the album version.
I cringed during the long intro and turned it off about 30 seconds into the actual song.
It's literally unlistenable.
I know I said it 11 years ago but I'll say it again....
How anyone in a position of power signed off on that is beyond me. I don't think they even listened to it. Both sides just wanted it to be over with.
You mean Chi dem or the whole album? I don’t think anyone in management recomp Azzof cared, they literally cashed the check and went on holiday. But Axl obviously and Costanzo were paying attention.
Overall I think it’s one treatment of the songs, which kind of relates to leaks and bootlegs, that’s all, it was more the current day production favoring form. I think that’s what Ezrin was talking about too, he was listening to intricate exqusite dynamic material and not hearing the uniformity that he pushed with KISSand has permeated the whole industry. Nothing in numetal or interscope is as loose as early CD versions.
Specific to Chi Dem the tightening the form really holds the song together, streamlines it, but it loses a lot of the punk energy it had early on. Slash worked pretty well with the album version, loosening up the riff but keeping the tight dynamics. There’s almost electronica feel to Chi dem on the album. Again the whole Queen over the top style of a GNR event album is the a big factor to what will happen to Atlas or Perhaps too. Look at what happened to the raw music of Sorry. A lot was lost for it to be a uniform big power ballad. It’s all there under the surface but it’s presented as this big bulletproof wall of sound.
I would say it’s pretty hard to find common ground between prof rock Bucket and Detroit Rock City. That was CD’s mission statement maybe. Kiss Zeppelin is going to alienate everyone.

i've never seen old gnr live. i've seen nu gnr live many times. i refuse to see current gnr live until robin bucket tommy brain pittman RETURN and slash duff LEAVES
I saw GNR in 91 and although I was very excited it wasn’t unlike seeing nu Guns in 2002 performance but for different reasons. 91 Slash and Duff were pretty relaxed and Axl was carrying it. Still his the marks but new songs like Estranged went over everybody’s head, a little like nu Guns songs did in 2002. The best show preposterously was Djs first show in 09, CD was out Axl was on fire, old songs killed, new songs were flying. At some point Dj was playing BOD and I was thinking do they know he’s not Slash? But maybe he was seen as Mr Sixx am. Fortus was doing the Bond theme, there wasn’t much wrong with the show, not sloppy, no weird versions of songs, just a authentic simulacrum of GNR playing crazy material like Shacklers and ITW perfectly. Crowd going wild.

Maybe at this point it is just what song you like because the production issues aren’t there.
I voted The Blues mainly because it’s never grabbed me lyrically but it’s kind of like the single. But CD turned it more into high water mark of Axl’s ringtone layer style. So much to unpack in final version, wrapped tightly. It probably suffered the most by being CD’d. Having to sit with ITW and sound right really worked against it’s natural traditional expected production treatment. With Slash it would have just been an Elton Rose ballad from UYI.

I wonder what the acoustic song Axl mentioned in the chats is, from a later era of recording maybe?
It really is too much too process.
I'm almost to the point of it getting played out. We took two trips to Redding and this was the soundtrack on both trips. I had already been listening to the discs for hours a day.
Disc 2 breathed new life into it.
While I have obvious favorites, soon I'm going to bury all the chaff and just narrow it down to a couple discs worth. That's really all there is anyways.
I know one thing...
I'll never be listening to the 2008 album again. I don't listen to it anyways but the disc 1/2000 Intentions, an assortment of basically finished instrumentals, and the skwerl leaks will forever satisfy my cravings for Chinese.
While I already knew this, this latest batch of leaks pointed out even more how the actual album is unlistenable noise pollution.
I think it’s more that CD serves Axl’s vocals, getting the message across. Whereas other versions showcase the audio. There’s so much going on sonically that do you need vocals. Vocals are kind of corny but that’s the trade. Axl had the right instincts, almost too many.

All things considered Bucket is probably the best guitarist to be in GNR. Maybe too nuanced exquisite for GNR in some cases.

Not as far as we know.
So that’s another track for the trilogy.

Yeah it sure was. I was gonna ask if he was using it since I'm on my phone and don't see avatars in posts.
I’ll try to find a suitable avatar. Charlie must still like a photo op.

It feels good to be back.
On mygnr, your avatar was Charilie Sheen right?
Yes Charlie is my alter ego role model.
But I lost that thumbnail so I was using Vince Vaughan for a while. I just bin drinking whisky boilermakers for a few hours now so any decision I make will be full of epic mistakes.

I had completely forgot Quick Song and Zodiac.
Those are A list for sure.
Dummy is like 3 song ideas crammed into one.
Must have been a sale on chicken that day.
As It Began definite potential and I agree it's probably one of the 22 songs under a different name.
I don't know what some of you guys see in Nothing.
Blur single from Think Tank. Kind of like a bombed Beck track. It’s mid 2004 and it’s time for Axl’s Zooropa. Nothing is a post Brit pop Bowie track. On The Way to the Club- Blur.
I’ve been listening to Narcos vol 1 and 2 so drop an instrumental then a single and then get a Mexican temptress to sing one.
You basically have most of the real vocal tracks, Eye on You is a good one. IRS track 10.
But Axl really pandered to stadium rock tracks they could play live and were all drama. That was his job.
But a Stadium Arcadium with Bucket might have been cool.
