Some of us found the grunge movement and the majority of '90s alt. rock to be disposable and forgettable. What's the good old days to some is just more of the same for the rest. I don't think music's taken a downward spiral necessarily. I think it's just sucked that bad for that much longer.

I personally thought bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, etc were hardly forgettable but I do respect a difference of opinion.

My question would be what bands of today would you put at the same level as those I listed?

This young generation will never realize the degradation of quality from mp3 to vinyl.

This is a fact.  Any of you younger guys who have not heard an album you like played on vinyl PLEASE do yourself a favor and at least try it once.  The music is much "fuller" and has a great deal more depth.

This part I agree with.  I'm not as blown away with CD as I hoped I would be but I am pleased overall with it and no doubt it has some substance.

The quality of music has definitely taken a downward spiral, it's very disposable and forgettable.  Much of the blame is MTV pushing their own ideas of "cool" on easily-influenced teens but the blame also has to be given to rockers (like Axl) as well.  The bands that were worth anything started putting out music that was much lesser in quality, took longer and longer between albums or "sold out" for the sounds of the moment.  This left the door wide open for something (anything) to feel the void.  The kids today just don't have much to choose from.  If we had been given the same choices (lack of) that they have today who knows what we would like.

#344 Re: Guns N' Roses » Whats next ?! » 911 weeks ago

So hard to say with the world of Axl but I do anticipate more music IF this album doesn't totally tank.  In the end cash will win I think.  A trilogy followed by a reunion would be my idea situation.  So 'soon' starts all over again.

Nah, Sorry is about Slash.

It's possible but I don't see any stronger case that it is about Slash than it is about the fans.  I'd be glad to hear both sides of the argument supported by lyrics.  Right now I lean more toward it being to the fans.

I was listening to the album last night on a long ride back home and when I listened to Sorry this same idea honestly came to my mind as well.  It REALLY does sound more like he is talking to "us" rather than Slash.  Can't say I truly blame him.

One thing about that though is that the record industry has gotten more frontloaded. 770,000 is around 10% of what UYI2 has sold so far. Nowadays it seems like the first week accounts for 50% (or more) of an album's total sales.

Exellent point!

As far as my prediction it is hard to say especially with the Best Buy exclusive, I think that will REALLY hurt initial sales.   I think had it not been for the exclusive we would have seen 500,000 copies moved.  With it I am guessing more like 275-350k.  I'll be MORE interested in the total after two weeks.  My measure of success will be that after two weeks it needs to be approaching 800k or better.  Anything less (imo) will be a failure for THIS particular record.

Or we can imagine what Bh could have done with it.

That would only make me cry!  More Bucket could have REALLY elevated this album so easily.

That's a fair argument.  However "average" and "fine" just don't cut it on a song that is screaming to be much more.   Just my opinion but I think that is why I can't truly be happy with the song.
