#351 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rate it?! » 911 weeks ago

I'll have to listen to it more for a solid rating but right now I give it a 7.5.

More Bucket would have elevated my rating but the writing is good and songs like Better, TWAT, IRS, Street of Dreams and If The World elevate the overall album even though there are (imo) some shit stains like Shackler's Revenge.

Some songs suffered from redos and some benefited.  Some did both at the same time.  IRS for instance is better in places and worse in places, same with Better.

Catcher in the Rye is a great song but the poor guitar work deflates it.  TWAT doesn't need all the silly effects, Scraped doesn't need the goofy intro or pseudo-harmonies.  This I Love has a solo that is kind of right but some how is "minimized" through lack of emotion.  I like Madagascar better than the leaks but it is still "forced".  Chinese Democracy is solid.  Riad is good but  not great.  If The World has grown on me, Sorry has too but it still has some beginning moments that really take away from the song.  Prostitute has some great moments but it isn't really a song that lives up to the potential although I do like the ending added.

This album could have been a 9 with just a minimum amount of extra effort in the right places.  Still it is better than most albums and not a poor album by any means.  Axl has did good with this overall, I just think it could have been much better with a little bit of constructive criticism from someone who wasn't a yes man.

Good thread.

Shackler's Revenge...don't get it.  The song just doesn't work for me at all.

#355 Re: Guns N' Roses » This I Love » 911 weeks ago

I don't hate the solo, it just seems like it is missing something to me.  Definitely not horrible, just a bit "shallow" maybe.

I felt the same way Neemo.  After hearing it a few times it is growing on me however.  As far as Robin's solo it's the right solo but with no heart if that makes sense, very hollow.  I'm having trouble with Sorry as well.  There are parts that are great but I just am not getting the "best song" vibe at all.  The album is complex and may take awhile for me to fully digest but right now the only one I see not ever growing too much on me is Shackler's Revenge, it's actually a bit annoying to me.

I'm a bit confused by this...

It was never available for sale anywhere, so how is it "official material?"

Official because it appeared on an officially released movie.  As estrangedpaul said it really wasn't a gem to have unless you are a hardcore collector.  Of course I myself am a hardcore collector and know the addicition, so if you would like to (ahem) hear it all you would need to do is rent Big Daddy and let the credits roll.

If Axl goes #2 it is absolutely due to his own choices.  Now what would this album have did if it had been released with promo like the Harley commercial a couple years back?  Of course the Best Buy exclusive deal isn't helping.  I really dislike today's "popular" music, fucking Kanye, 50 cent, blah blah blah.  What the fuck ever happened to music?  BUT it isn't the teens of today's fault.  Rock is a fucking joke if you listen to the bands who call themselves "rockers".  Then a legitimate rock album comes out and the guy who is leading the group is a fucking nut job who after 14 yrs of bullshit doesn't even try to promote the album.  That's really gonna win some young fans over.

Am i the only one who thinks Sorry is the weakest track on the album? It certainly wouldn't be the one i'd play to a casual listener first.

I wouldn't say the weakest but I definitely don't consider it as good as Better/Street of Dreams/TWAT and a few other tracks like so many others do.  That's definitely a good thing however, it's great that the favorite tracks are so varied amongst the members.  That is a good sign for the quality of the album.
