And when you look at some of the lyrics on CD, it becomes even more embarrassing.
Nowt wrong with the lyrics on CD. Axl's lyrical turn of phrase is vastly superior to, say, Myles "rhyme light with right" Kennedy.
Mayyyyybe not on This I Love though lol.

Imagine Fernando trying to negotiate with film studios/producers. Anything beyond signing off on using a few old songs would obviously be too difficult.
Yeah and he probably got robbed on those songs too.

Booking them to play VMAs without even just a single and music video ready to go - that's a terrible idea. Following that up with a tour when you still have nothing ready? Also terrible idea.
All they needed was a single to give them some momentum....
Madagascar with Silkworms or Riad as a B side. Hell... Silkworms might have accidentally turned it into a double A side if it can sneak its way on to a club chart and/or become a hit on the rave scene.
Not a big fan of Madagascar as a first single but he was willing to play it at the VMAs....so release it. Should've been in stores within days of that performance.
They didn't have the slightest clue what they were doing. It's unfortunate that the rest of the lineup didn't have any clout or influence to get something going.
The next blunder would happen a year later with the infamous Trunk IRS leak. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory....
Releasing that as a single to tide fans over would've worked wonders in more ways than one...
Fans are happy
Media has something positive to discuss
It buys time for you to wrap up the album without the negativity clouding everything.
I'll go even one step further with the 2006 leaks....
By the time the band hits the stage at Hammerstein, the following songs should have been released as an EP....
Better(this is the single)
IRS
TWATHell...you could still include those on the album two years later.
I think in retrospect, looking at the shit that was released at the time, the record company was off-base saying they had no songs. There was plenty of interest in what Axl was doing. Release what’s done after Rio and maybe there’s something. But given the dynamics of the industry at the time they thought maybe there’s a blast in curiosity sales but it won’t sell a tour, so let’s hold out for a reunion. They weren’t necessarily wrong.

Catcher ... the original recording, not the one on the album.
Kind of crazy a leaked cassette tape was better than what was on the album.

Chinese Democracy is such a disaster project. There are plenty of good ideas on that album and at some point a lot of them were actually good songs too. The finished product though just completely falls flat. Too much of everything, messy sound and no cohesion. In many ways it feels like an album recorded by different artists over several decades in different countries, which is pretty close to the truth. This is not an album, it's a collection of overproduced songs from various lineups thrown together for accounting reasons.
This. But I also think the overproduction was an attempt to make it sound like a cohesive album. Like at least it’s all overproduced.

I’ve liked Slash’s take on Chinese solos. This one was lame and uninspired.
Axl wasn’t his best on it either. Probably should keep it in the back pocket.

When I first heard Shackler’s I was energized by the energy of the song and Axl’s vocals relative to other leaked Chinese songs. Unfortunately it sounds out of place on the album likely due to the time gap in finishing the songs.

Noticed on the last show they came out for the encore with Coma. Friggin cool song to come back with after the break. I go to every show when they come around and just this simple set tweak would have me geeking out in the crowd. Don’t know why it’s so hard.

I’d like to here this band cover Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff, that song is a banger / barn burner.
Something that suits Axl, would suit his hero Bon Scott too if he were here.
One of the most wild gnr takes I’ve ever heard. Don’t think you’re serious but either way lol.

My only gripe with the setlist these days is the order. Be cool if you showed up one night expecting ISE and instead it’s YCBM or something for an opener.
