#391 Guns N' Roses » The consequences of the Iron Throne » 527 weeks ago

After 'You Could Be Mine', Axl asks the crowd, "Have you ever heard the expression break a leg? Well, I think I just did."

Axl actually injures his heel and is forced to wear a brace on it for the first few weeks of  the "UYI" tour.

- The Ritz, NYC, May 16th, 91. Third warm-up show for the tour.

His left foot, again. Apparently, it's the fragile one, so the years got back at Uncle Axl there. Back then, Axl used a custom-made brace to actually move around the stage. The nature of the injury was probably a bit different and required less operating / recuperating, as he's hardly letting it get in his way.

This time, we get the Iron Throne, courtesy of Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters crew had a bit of a laugh putting it together, apparently, with the oval of lights and the guitar-necks on the sides. I noticed Axl pushes a button on his right to change his mic channel, to talk to the band / crew. He does a lot of talk during a song. The Iron Throne is a good way to circumvent the obvious issue, but where does it leave the band?

Slash is now the main attraction. He moves around at ease, with the limelight following him. Duff and Fortus, ever so enthusiastic, are providing him with back-up, without stepping on his toes. Fortunately, Slash has the chops to pull it through, he's had 20-odd years to fine-tune his stage presence. Axl's fortunate to have the contemporary Guitar Hero taking the heat off him. Imagine had this happening a few years back.

Axl's omnipresent. Less costume changes, more time to witness the show. I remember seeing him in '06. The band was late. Axl was still en route to the country(!). Jungle opened and Axl literally warped into the front, all poise. I took it as nerves, that bee-line he wanted to make straight on to the stage. To his credit, he did put out a hell of a show.

Now, he's there all the time. During his downtime, he has the opportunity to soak it all up. Looking left, there's Slash. On his right, Duff. Here and there is his made man Fortus, the ultimate Izzy replacement. I'd imagine he'd be placated by this sight. I'd say Fortus is a better showman than Izzy, to be honest. I love Izzy for being Izzy, but Fortus covers the big stages better.

The Iron Throne changes the on-stage dynamics in an interesting way. It can actually be beneficial for Ax himself, to be able to live in the moment and adjusting to the situation. Slash can and will do his own thing, reclaiming his old space. Meanwhile, you can tell that Ax is itching to get up and running again, as it's obvious he likes what he sees in front of him.

Axl's voice. Shall we say, 2010 again, or shall we wait until Coachella for that verdict? I was positively surprised. There was that certain tone there, he really sounded excited to be there and sing. Stick with the process and recover mobility by the summer and we could see him going after his 2006 powerhouse performances.

Axl/DC. I doubt they want to do the Iron Throne thing. However, given the prognosis of a one-month cast, he should be fine by the time Angus wants him, if he does. Maybe a bit standing-still, but fine nevertheless. If they give him a pass, he loses squat, because they can always explain it away with the injury and allowing him to keep healing and Guns a priority. Publicity gained.

In the final analysis, I think Axl's enjoying the role of the underdog again. The fortunate bit is that this thing happened early enough to affect only the warm-up shows - but does anyone find it slightly eerie that history repeats itself?

I like how they're opening with ISE/MrB again. Harking back to '91 22

Guess they'll be less costume changes in the immediate future 16

So, it was passable, then?

Coma, that's a left-fielder.

He can turn it into an advantage.

Stationary Axl can mean more power in vocals.

Slash told him to break a leg moments before showtime.

Axl's self-appointed hype man.

Buzz, I was mostly responding to RaZor's take here.

I don't find M to have been harmful to the band, I've enjoyed what he's had to say, and he has just as much of a right to say what he pleases on he internet as we all do.

Wonder if Beta still has his number?

MSL, 2008 wrote:

The main thing is, I've dealt with Beta a lot cos she kept calling me a lot, and ranting, and I wouldn't say anything, cos as long as she kept talking and revealing inside info, why would I try to shut her up? ... It was probably 3 of 4 phone calls, the average length of each call would maybe be 2,5 hours, of which maybe i'd get in three words per conversation, of her ranting about so many various topics that there would be so much stuff to cover, ya know.  And a lot of times gone by...

There were one or two conversations where I would hear a male voice in the background, whispering things for her that they wanted to ask me... I was just fascinated how hung up they still were on Slash. Every other word out of her mouth was blaming things on Slash, "Slash is an asshole", "if the fans only knew what Slash is like", "his public persona is all fake", secretly he's trying to get back in the band, you can't believe anything Slash says, he's a piece of shit. So much of what she was talking about was about Slash, and it had nothing to do with the fact I was leaking songs...

I don't think there's anyway the band are purposely leaking stuff to try to restore faith with the fan base, cos from my conversation with beta, it's very clear they consider the hard core fan's the enemy. The disdain in Beta's voice in our phone calls last year, when she would talk about the fans, and "axl doesn't owe you anything, leave him alone, this is his life's work, if it comes out it comes out if it doesn't, it doesn't, you guys need to leave him alone, you're driving him crazy..."

...When people say to me "how could you do this to the band..." It's not that i'm doing it to the band! The band has created a situation where it's us versus them, it's the band versus the fans, and the fans need to stick together, and I don't think it's right for some fans to be, like, 'elite fans' that are better than others, that get to hear these songs and the regular fans don't get to. I think that's bullshit!  So, I don't think I'm better than anybody else, if i get a song, i'm gonna try to trade for more songs, and when i've exhausted all those possibilites, it's time for everybody to have those songs, period.

Yeah, I also think Axl's been showing his fanbase a poor example of public behaviour with all the f-bombs and attacks on other people's character.

MSL wrote:

"In terms of any crazy last-minute demands, maybe that story will come out someday. I don't think people realize just how close this whole 'reunion' thing was to completely falling apart and not happening at all."

The gist of it. It nearly fell apart. Maybe one day we'll get the skinny.

That vague insinuation really helps things out with the band, MSL. Way to go.

Haven't bothered to follow them, but I can imagine.

I wonder why. Axl's usually such a calm guy online.

A recent article on the reunion had a few interesting points from "recent" managers, which may warrant some attention, particularly if read side-by-side with the 'No more managers' interview.

Doc McGhee (former KISS manager, announced on the job in Feb '10 by Axl, fired in around Feb '11.)

"[Axl] wanted to prove he could write," Mr. McGhee says, "and saw his Guns N’ Roses as a way to demonstrate his contributions to the original band."

McGhee was said to orchestrate a re-release of CD to go with a US tour, starting in early 2011. This was (apparently) thwarted by Irving Azoff, as his lawsuit with Axl was still in litigation. It would've been a good opportunity for Axl to come back in his rocking 2010 form and give the tour he was supposed to in 2002 and 2006.

Contrary to anyone’s claims there are no concrete plans nor were there ever for a tour, a relaunch or sponsors (n’ certainly not to replace anyone in the band) beyond a collection of random ideas thrown out by various individuals w/out any real foundation or negotiations in place other than our prior involvements (which wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to put together). And 4 the record Doc McGhee is no longer involved w/either myself or GN’R. - Axl, Feb '11

Instead, the deals fell apart and Axl went home, only to appear crestfallen and ludicrously out of shape in Rock in Rio 4 in October '11. A new manager was sought for this next tour cycle, which might've been a follow-up to the US tour concocted by McGhee.

Peter Katsis (former Ministry manager, let go in Dec '11).

A Guns N’ Roses reunion is “one of those things the audience was told they would never get,” says Peter Katsis, who briefly managed the breakaway band Mr. Rose has fronted in recent years.

Manager after manager popped the reunion question. In one 3 a.m. conversation while managing Mr. Rose on tour, Mr. Katsis recalls: “He told me he wasn’t opposed to doing it at some point, and that he had no real issues with Slash.” But he still wasn’t ready.

The constant [reunion] question is an albatross and leaves Rose not only tired but wary of anyone in the business looking to work with him. "All these managers, they all believe in one thing: sell a reunion tour and get their commission. It's just a phone call. It's a half a day's work, or however long they want to keep the bidding war going. They get their commission and they don't care if it falls on its face." LA Times, 12/2011

Axl’s been carrying the torch,” [Katsis] says. “It’s a business negotiation between who’s been carrying the business, and who’s just coming back.

Katsis left the fold after less than a month on the job. LA Times, 12/2011

Mr. Rose parted ways with Mr. Katsis in late 2011, leaving the handling of Guns N’ Roses to Beta Lebeis, Mr. Rose’s personal assistant and confidante, and her son, Fernando; they were aided by Mr. Rose’s business manager, booking agent and lawyer.

"Every manager comes in and wants me to make things smaller," says Rose. Guns N' Roses, for example, requires twice as many tour trucks as the budget calls for, he says. Why no one else can understand the band's needs is an obvious frustration for Rose. - LA Times, 12/2011

"We decided, 'No more managers,'" said Lebeis a few days after the Seattle concert. "Between me and Fernando and my daughter, we're dealing with the management." Lebeis added that she characterizes Rose as "more than a son to me," and that after Katsis' departure, "I told [Rose] if he hires another manager, I quit." LA Times, 12/2011
