Now suddenly everyone changes their mind, can't be fucked showing up to the talkshow to explain it, decide to play more secret mystery games on twitter...won't even say who is playing...and we're supposed to like it?

We have a choice. We can say, 'Fuck it', and let the shows happen at their own pace, come what may.

I too would've preferred a bit more openness in regards to the lineup et al, but this is Guns. Remember Hammerstein? New guitarist was who, now?

These shows are sold to Joe Q Public with Axl getting back together with Slash and Duff. From a promotional standpoint, the backing players are irrelevant - unless you're doing an entire tour with original members. Fortus has a comparatively low name recognition value in the mainstream.

I get the gist of what you're saying, but the thing is, this regrouping is big business and it's beyond the level of public attention Guns have attracted in the past... 10 to 15 years. They want to close the wound and make money in the process. If we're all lucky, the shows will be good, too.

Back when people had ethics, the rule of promotors was to always book extra shows after the first announced one, not earlier.

Is this sea change a fault of the band or is it then simply a symptom of a larger issue?

monkeychow wrote:

I don't believe in the idea that if you trick someone the fault it theirs for not figuring it out.

They spend money to see a certain band at a certain place at a certain time. As long as that's delivered, we're talking first world problems.

I think people are going for the historical aspect, they want to be able to say to their grandkiddies..."I was there when....."

To me, the third show would be just as viable than the first show for that purpose. Mind you, only a select few fans of all people interested in Guns are able to attend at all. Anyone with a ticket is privileged, I think - too bad some of themselves appear to think otherwise.

Sounds like GNR, market a show as the first time Axl and Slash have been together on stage in two decades, your fans pay thousands to go rather than wait for the inevitable global tour so as to feel the excitement of the first time , many traveling from overseas for thousands of bucks, and then you play a secret show before hand.

I love the music but this band literally has no respect for it's fanbase at all.

They have shown a gross lack of respect for their fans in the past, yes. Repeatedly.

But I have to ask, what's with the exclusivity? Why is it so important to compare your personal concert experience to others and insist on being in the 'first' show is more significant than the 'third'?

And all those people, who actually thought Coachella would be the first, got served for being gullible. One could sense warm-up shows coming up a mile away, because a show of that scale is a bit too much to just jump into after 20 years.

You buy the ticket, you make the call and face the music.

If they cancel or postpone I can see the ire. But by booking other shows? Less so.

If Axl cant make his own band which he controls run smooth how the hell can he due 10 tour dates with another band  and issues not arise ?

Because,

Guns is Axl's band. He can as he pleases. AC/DC is a separate entity, governed by musicians he respects. They have a good production machine behind them.

All Axl needs to do is to show up and sing. Otherwise, he's going to get scolded by Angus, his employer 16

What we are already witnessing makes the CD saga seem even more bizarre than it was. I don't think he was ever fully comfortable with it, whether it was being forced to carry the whole load himself, the label cluster fucking the project in its early years, etc.

He was uneasy with it. That's why the oversized jerseys, the rants, the fits, the cancellations... He was as flaky as ever in 2002. As time passed, Ax apparently felt increasingly trapped with CD. His label contacts were swapped in favour of the new Interscope management and he flunked out on completing the album.

2006 was a bit different. Merck had used his position at Sanctuary to secure a $1Million/year income for Axl for the next 20 years in exchange for his share on the publishing rights of the Guns back catalogue.

Since 2004, Sanctuary had also been bankrolling the studio bill they were now generating at Curt Cuomo's. What was needed was a finalized album, so that Geffen would buckle up and gear it for release. Axl had been given two extra years to finalize CD and by 2006, Sanctuary was in dire straits, so they too moved over to wanting the album out.

Merck wrote:

We planned the tour in February, just after Axl's birthday and we were supposed to finish the album in May, before it started... we needed the money to be able to complete the album and keep the band alive... I found the money and the motivation to keep Axl and the band alive and get the record made when everyone else had given up and walked away.

Unfortunately the muse disappeared just as fast as she came and the tour started with no single at radio to support it and the album still needing two or three days of work.

The record company refused to conclude the renegotiation until we were ready to hand over the finished album and refused to prepare a marketing campaign or commission video treatments until they had it in their hands... despite the success of many of the dates on the tour the pressure on all of us became unbearable. -src

Meanwhile, band members were called back with insane retainers. The songs were rehearsed for two guitars, Axl wanted three. It went down on the wire, with Ron famously coming in two weeks before the tour. The inclusion of the third guitar was hardly a vote of confidence to the band from Ax's part, and he had equal doubts on the album itself - otherwise, he would've completed it and kissed it off.

By now, Ax's noticed what exactly Slash and Duff brought to the table. They are autonomous songwriters and could do good with the press Axl hates. He could focus on lyrics and melody without bothering much with the instrumentals; Slash and Duff got it covered. Without them, the silence is deafening and the songwriting spotty, with trial and error going into everything.

SG, he's gaining on age and the quarry gets harder every time. I do agree he can get into a better shape than how he is now, and he usually does pick up on his exercise regimen on the road. His voice tends to improve alongside.

Here's hoping he'll be happy within his own skin in the coming months, instead of hiding underneath all those coats, glasses and hats. But it should be said that he appears a hell of a lot healthier than in Rock in Rio 2011. From a distance, he also looks more fit than in that January photo.

Prolly as ready as he's going to be this time around. His attitude on stage is what intrigues me.

At a distance, he appears close to the 2013 shape.

What's worth noting is his posture. He does seem to carry himself more elegantly now, even if we're looking at snapshots. The cane made him appear like the FDR of Rock.

Appearance is half confidence, and AC/DC inquiring about the frontman slot means a lot to Ax. It's in the Freddie Mercury tribute ballpark, helping out your childhood heroes.

The album version should have been closer to this. All that synth BLOWS.

Funny that,

Pitman said he and Axl wrote a lot of songs initially on acoustic gtrs in his kitchen. There may be a version of Maddy in the vaults that's pretty much that thing.
