It´s based on a phone recording from a GNR VIP afterparty. They played The General during that afterparty (i guess it was in 2010) and someone recorded a part of the song. These are the lyrics:

[Chorus]
Do you remember who did it?
Who did that to you...
Who would do this to you?
Who would do this to you? To the young!
Who would do that to me, boy?
Up to abuse, in fact you knew them
Who wants to lose?
To lose
Do you?

[Verse]
I've got hopes and dreams, and I must feel bolder
My hopes, my dreams have died
Now I rest my hate in the rumors as they're pushin' through
There's a child now chained to the bed now
To me it's time I'm always workin' and I'm gonna get out
I think it's high time you should fuckin' die, child
I think this time you've broken everything inside
I won't be ever satisfied
This is why, baby, you know I got you
[Chorus]
Do you remember who did it?
Who did, that to you...
Who would do this, to you?
Who would do this to you? To the young!
Who would that to me, boy?
Up to abuse, in fact we knew them
Who wants to lose?
To lose
Do you?

You mean these lyrics come from that same phone recording that was so bad that you could hardly hear the melody? lol

Tie Your Mother Down was recorded during the Contraband era along with Surrender and No More No More.

Back then I thought they should change the name if they didn't continue with Scott, because Scott was such distinct element of the band's identity. Now I'm not so sure anymore. They should have went with Franky Perez after. He and Dave did some good songs, and he didn't sound so bad on Matt's short-lived Deadland Ritual project. He wouldn't have been a huge name like Scott, but more reliable and controllable.

Izzy screws everybody over. He bailed on GNR, Ju Ju Hounds and New York Dolls. His nickname should be Mr. Unreliable.

What happened with JuJu Hounds and the Dolls?

That's also something I would be curious about. I remember that he wanted to help them out and played with them for a while, but I don't remember hearing anything about why it didn't work out...

Similar to your other reply - I could be wrong cos I'm old and this stuff is like 20 years back now....(scary when we're talking about VR!) but my recollection of it is the other way around....

I think Duff's version was that Izzy wanted to do it like a fun hobby project - write 8 songs add a bunch of covers and hit the road immediately and tour it - Izzy wasn't as interested as the others in building it into a supergroup big deal.
Izzy thought he and duff split the vocal duties and they just do a season of it kinda thing. But Duff was more like "if we do this we have to do it the right way" cos he realised what a big deal it was to get them all back together.

Anyway they hung out and wrote for a while, but when the decision was made to bring in a frontman Izzy figured that would lead to more rockstar drama rather than fun and he took off. Slash said it was because Izzy was still traumatised by Axl but he might have just been being a smartass.

Curiously they also said that Dave was still around when they were writing with Izzy, and he was a bit like "shall I make a discreet exit then" but that  they told him to hang out and we'll just jam with 3 guitarists. Slash said people don't understand his relationship with Izzy: Izzy's always the guy who is half around, he's never exactly in or out. He'll just be there sometimes. 16

That's how it happened. I remember reading an interview with Dave when he was unsure what to do when he came to rehearsal and Izzy was there. Duff had told him to wait and see, anticipating that it would be very likely that Izzy wouldn't stay...

Izzy just wanted to him and Duff to handle the vocals and bailed when Slash wanted a proper frontman...

It's a shame that he also never released the solo album he did with Slash & Duff on it (around the time of On Down The Road). The same with Duff's 2014/2015 solo album where Duff was super happy to be writing and recording with Izzy. There has to be tons of great material buried somewhere...

As far as Izzy leaving his band while going out for cigarettes. That was the Ju Ju Hounds yes. If I remember correctly they still had a gig of their tour left and were also somewhat in the middle of recording JuJu Hounds 2.

Really great interview with a lot of insights! Thank you for sharing!

Makes me wonder if Hard School was there before, then put aside, before being brought back

Yeah it sucks, I had tickets to one of the Aerosmith shows. But I suspect that COVID is not the real reason why they cancelled. It's way to early to cancel, as things will get a lot better again during summer in Europe. Due to Covid Postponements I have (well had) tickets for 9 shows this summer. They're (so far) the only ones who cancelled. I think Brad mentioned on two separate occasions that there are tensions in the band and that by now age has become a factor. The tour was initially supposed to be take place in 2020...

You misspelled Oklahoma.  lol

You know, now that you mention it, I think you're right. It should be spelled "Soul Monster".

All jokes aside, any of these would be beyond awesome. I'm just afraid that it's gonna be another one of the weaker tracks. Atlas comes to mind.

2) The 2006 tour. If they'd managed to retain Buckethead, and the continuity of the new line-up. As it was, frantically subbing in Bumblefoot left everyone confused, and started the "revolving door" of guitarists. Promo was completely fucked by the time they got around to doing the Better video; it was "introducing" like seven band members, and the two lead guitarists were no longer in the band by that point. Bumblefoot, for all his guitar skills, just wasn't as iconic a figure as Buckethead. And Robin and Fortus' idea of just sticking with two guitarists was terrible. Yes, they could play the songs, but by that point the public had latched onto Buckethead as the defining figure of nu GN'R, and his absence could only leave the band looking diminished.

But Axl's voice was on top form, and with a stable line-up (which meant coherent promo) and an album release they would've killed it.

While I agree that losing Buckethead was a huge loss, I for one think that the Robin/Richard combo would have worked perfectly fine. Even with Bumble in the band, Robin was, apart from Axl of course, the main attraction in 2006. Not having Bumble would have helped to just get the CD out without starting the process of someone else adding parts. And in 2006 there was enough momentum that even an early 2007 release would have been a huge turning point.

I get that the look of that line-up as a whole was irritating for people who wanted just another AFD. But even if the music went in another direction, the way that each of the "new" guys could just be themselves was pure punkrock. Unlike Ozzy, Axl didn't mind the mask or the bucket, he was more interested in the guy's musical ideas. Same with Robin. And that's how it should be in my opinion.

What I never understand is why people always put Bucket in the stunt-player category. His talent was/is so much more than just the insane technical skill. Just compare him with Bumblefoot. Bumblefoot was also really skilled, but Bucket always had a sense for melody and harmony, that sets him apart from other "stunt-players" like Bumble. I'll never forget the moment I first heard Electric Tears. I had no idea what would be waiting for me, as it was the first Bucket album that I bought. I was blown away by the feel, not the skill.

Ashba is the exact opposite. 80% show, 20% skill, and 0% feeling. No wonder his time with GN'R was the lamest in the band's history.
