I am delighted that the forums in general are lit up over this reunion and all the haters from both sides have quietly stopped the civil war.

Thinking about it, much of this is because of a consensus that Axl, Slash and Duff constitute as Guns N' Roses.
After that, it becomes a wish-list of the several people associated to the name. Name, validated. Moving on.

I just hope Axl can face the level of expectation and overcome any bullshit stage fright and just get out there and enjoy this..

He's got about three months to make sure his voice is in shape. That'd oughta do it.
He can get away with being more stationary (and hefty) if he can deliver on the vocals.

Still, Axl's a physical guy on stage. A long-term workout plan would serve him well.
He was an exercise nut early into the millennium, he knows the pros and cons there.

I hope.

Logically - the moment Slash does an interview he will be asked about GNR and Axl - he is then in a losing position - best case is he says something harmless and the show goes on - worst case is he thinks he says something harmless but it upsets Axl and the reunion is dead.....

Also, Slash may even give an answer well along the company line, but click-bait websites providing "news" turn it on its head. Unfortunately, controversy sells.

One way to deal with it would be to do a joint video interview with Axl and Slash. Safe environment, friendly interviewer, premeditated answers. Saying simple things like, "Guns got so big, so fast, that we just grew apart in the early 90's". Slash telling how much he appreciates Axl's vision and persistence to make the best album he can, Axl acknowledging that Slash has worked hard to make a solo career for himself. Both driving home the point that they're eager to work together again.

Keep it simple, focus on the biz and art, leave personal stuff aside for the time being. Might work.

I think the notion that no one is the crowd cares about the Chinese Democracy songs is flat out wrong.   No, its not AFD or the Illusions, but many people do like at least some of the songs and I think a lot of fans are excited at the possibility of hearing a few of those songs played by Slash.

The Blues, TWAT, Catcher...

I would call them good fits to any Guns setlist.

I think Slash will do most of the press once the gag order is lifted.

He's skilled with it and has a positive relationship with various media outlets.

Axl may talk, maybe just once (on the forums?). He may wax cryptic on stage.

Put it this way, it can hardly get worse than the 2011-14 era.
Axl out of depth. DJ in the band. Playing weddings and private shows.

I was a big CD supporter for a long time (with those '06-'07 top shows).
The myth, Axl the recluse studio rat, putting Brian Wilson into shame.

It came down to a Slash lookalike with Fat Elvis. A mockery of best intentions.
Still, Axl's got an uphill to climb. We'll see in Vegas how serious he is this time.

The first image brings back memories. Had it as a poster way back when posters were mainly things on the wall.

Actually Merck was right on the money about the album's roll out.....he was just 2 years off. It was thrown out there with little thought put into it or fanfare and let the chips fall where they may......which he pretty much told us would happen and was scolded for it.

That's a great point, actually. Merck described it to a tee; if they get the deal, the album may get a bum's rush because of the nonexistent band / record company relationship. Axl would have to do his own promo.

Merck wrote:

You just might walk into your record shop one Tuesday and find it there. -RS

Axl wrote:

The band and I, along with our record company, feel that this record deserves the proper setup and promotion, not the “13 Tuesdays left” and “It may just appear in your record store” approach offered by management. We believe this strategy may have been used as a tool by management to sell this latest tour to the various promoters, and if this was the case, this was obviously unfair to them. - The March 6th letter

Merck wrote:

The record company refused to conclude the renegotiation until we were ready to hand over the finished album and refused to prepare a marketing campaign or commission video treatments until they had it in their hands. This is still their position as of this week. - Merck's letter

Does anyone remember the rumour about some nuGNR members banding together and negotiating as a block, to strengthen their position with management? If one left, they would all walk. Thus putting Axl and TB in a bind with having to replace numerous members.

I never heard the details about this rumor either but I'd love to.

I think it ties to the One Man Mutiny incident in 2010.

I agree that the contracts were renewed, at some point, to all the way up to the 2014 residency.

In around April, in South America, Ron 'quit', according to a "confirmed source with the band." Curiously, this was when Duff was around. It's tempting to think Ron and Duff had a heart-to-heart, and Duff recalled the way he felt in '97. Ron would've seen Slash coming, anyway, and he had been chronically unhappy with Guns since 2011. He'd attempted suicide on tour, because of his back injury and the medication he was on.

In May, it was reported that Axl was putting the band on hiatus after the residency. This ties in with what Tommy said, they all 'left it in Vegas'. Axl and Duff had their own plans to hatch, and it was probably up in the air who would get the call, eventually. This was apparently all right with Tommy as well, as he had personal issues coming up that would possibly hinder his future touring with Guns.

In mid-June, Appetite for Democracy Blu-Ray, from the 2012 residency, is finally released. Two weeks later, DJ posts his letter and the source confirms Ron has also left the band. The band was on hiatus, so big deal. The Occam's Razor solution offered by many here is that both Ron and DJ simply accomodated the Blu-Ray release by announcing their exits after it hit.

They all left for their own reasons. With Ron and DJ, it was the lack of new songs and an album, along with the likelier undertaking to purge the CD vault. There's less to be gained in royalties by putting in a new guitar solo to a decade-old track. Also, Ron was up to here with Team Brazil and their irreverent attitude towards him as an employee / contract player, despite the many times he did more than his share to save the day. DJ, well. He had the album thing, too, but also, he was taking the heat, left, right and center. Deservedly so, to a degree.

Posted this here, originally.

DJ posted this about four days after his resignation letter, only to delete it.

After the laughter. A slight change of tone from

The amount of confidence and trust that Axl placed in me
...genuinely heartwarming and truly career-defining.
...play these incredible songs night after night to the most enthusiastic and loving crowds.
...the friendships that were forged during that time were deep and long lasting.
...the most beautiful surprise of all was YOU... the fans.

The FB tweet is more, 'The level of abuse from everyone and (at times) Axl was all but devastating. I got called out for who I was and who I was not. You're all mad.'
