#561 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » SLASH 'Wasn't Disappointed' By AXL ROSE's Decision To Skip RnRHoF » 690 weeks ago
Dizzy as a "creative musician" really ought to know better. My feeling is here that this was more of an attempt to keep the boss happy than anything else. Fact is Dizzy old son, when Slash shows up on stage to play anything up to 10,000 people show up to listen, when Hookers & Blow play...well...I rest my case.
Hookers and Blow is a joke but to say that at least 10k people show up to Slash... KINDA misleading.
Porto Alegre, where I live, is a town at southern Brazil, we're more Argentinean than Brazilian culturally, but Slash played here, twice, to less then 1000 people on a 5k place. He played in São Paulo and Curitiba to even smaller audiences, almost "bars full of people" in 2010 and this year played to around 2,5k people.
This in BRAZIL, where both him and Axl are taken as semi-gods...
I'm no Slash basher nor Axl supporter (lately I'm way more an Axl basher btw), but as we shouldn't dismiss Slash to justify Axl or vice-versa, we shouldn't exagerate on Slash's audiences to slap Dizzy's face (altough sometimes he deserves
) and there has been reports on this board about recent concerts in US where there were few people..
I know people like to say "oh, but he played on [insert town] and there were 25k people".. It's like saying Axl headlined Rock In Rio or the summer fests so he "always plays to 75k people"...

Slash in his younger years probably didn't fight hard enough for writing credits, but fuck yes he deserved writing credits for NR. Axl did the vocals and synth. Slash did the arrangement. He turned Axl's vocals into an actual song. He turned it into a rock epic. And his solos alone are all timers. The outro is killer.
Although I agree that Slash's contributions to Axl's songs made them great, this argument is missing one point that, to me is, is very important.
It's not Slash that made November Rain into a rock epic. This credit is due to MIKE CLINK.
If you pick the demo, piano and vocals, and you look at it from a producer standpoint you have LOTS of ways to go.
To me both Axl and Slash are important to the GNR SOUND, Izzy is important to the GNR pop appeal in the songs (specially on Appetite song structures) and Mike Clink is the glue that makes it all sound cohesive. He was the closest to George Martin that GNR ever had.

In 2010 for the Porto Alegre show, that was scheduled to 9:30 PM and started only by 1:00 AM of the next day, by 10:00PM he was still in Sao Paulo having dinner with Ellen Jabour.
He left Sao Paulo around 11:30 PM and basically arrived in Porto Alegre at the stage. One of the opening acts basically left because of that, the other played only three songs, Baz played his normal set.
Everybody blamed Rio storm and bureaucracy for forensics, but later on the dinner news came out from Ellen herself.

I don't intend to buy something that was broadcasted on public television unless I have no other option.
If a Vegas dvd is officially released I'd rather get that then..
Hope this london one gets on torrent sites soon IF it won't be released officially..

That Snakepit album is better than anything by any of them past 1991.
It's not better than Apocalyptic Love or Chinese Democracy and, for my taste, it's not better than any Izzy solo album.

I really like the first Snakepit album, but it came out in a time where everybody was thirsty for new GNR songs and to have Slash, Matt and Gilby was enough at the time. I remember having all the solo albums with me around 97, Izzy's, Slash's, Gilby's and Duff's and thinking: "Ok, that's god enough until the guys release a new album"...
So I am kinda attached to 5 O' Clock Somewhere, Juju Hounds, Pawnshop Guitars and Believe In Me.
But looking critically to it, Snakepit 1 has some good IDEAS that didn't turned out good songs, except a couple of tunes. Believe In Me was a mess and only 10 Years, by Duff and Gilby is worth a listen nowadays. Juju Hounds and other Izzy albums are, for me good songs that could've turned out great with Axl and Slash. Gilby's one is good but lacks ambition and falls into cock rock too much for my taste.

This gig got me thinking:
Does anybody knows how a contract of a GNR member (or this type of membership) is?
I mean, do they earn money by each show? Or a monthly salary?
I remember Baz had a fallout with his guitar player - that young kid - because he refused to go on a TV show claiming he deserved more royalties for that.
Is a GNR member attached to the band by this salary and special occurrences (as pay per views, dvds, etc) are paid as extras?
REALLY would like to have at least some idea...

Remember those days when there were announcements of shows and it was pretty exciting because we'd believe that an album was on its way?
I miss that.

Amused to Death (with Jeff Beck on guitars, Don Henley on some vocals)Pro's and Con's came out prior to him leaving Pink Floyd, as did Music From The Body. I was talking about the work he did after he left Pink Floyd.
polluxlm wrote:In the public eye the comparison is in fact very apt, but you just don't see the same dedication for The Division Bell among Floyd fans as you do for CD and GN'R. And I don't think I've ever seen any strong desire for new Gilmour material since I joined the web back in 97. Do you hear anything as good as TWAT or Madagscar on TDB? To each his own of course, but that would surprise me.
I like Poles Apart, Keep Talking and High Hopes all as much as I like TWaT.
And if you're talking about GN'R fans as a whole, then yeah comparing The Division Bell and Floyd fans to it is very apt. If you walk up to the average GN'R fan (not a forum dweller) and ask if they own, have heard or want to hear Chinese Democracy, you'll get the same response you would from an average fan of Floyd when asked about The Division Bell: "No thank you"
You're right about Pro's And Con's... He left Floyd in 85 and P&C's is from 84, although he didn't release anything else with Floyd after... Floyd's 84 is GNR's 96
About Music from The Body I really don't feel it's like a proper solo album, sounds more like a collaboration/experimentation but I get your point.
