"See, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your CDs and burn 'em. Cause you know what? The musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fuckin' high on drugs."

They are starting to do that...it is called a 360 deal. Jay Z and Madonna just signed one with Live Nation. You get an album contract, tour promotion, merchandising....all in one shot. Label gets a piece of everything. If I am Axl and Geffen won't give, I shop all the material elsewhere and try to get a 360 deal. The advance money you get from your new deal will be used to settle the score with Geffen (Jay Z got 25 million). Of course, anybody who signs Axl to that kind of deal will want assurances that a reunion will eventually happen.

Tommy said himself that it was difficult to listen to his brother play without getting emotional....I am sure there is still alot of guilt and sadness over his brother's dismissal from the band and ultimately, his death.:(

Aussie, I agree with your post. Negotiations could go on a very long time if one side doesn't give. 18 Also, if Axl hasn't given them the masters, then he still has the power to change shit up....the scariest thought of all.

#6819 Re: Guns N' Roses » finally a decent straight forward comment regarding CD » 940 weeks ago

Neemo, I think you have been slightly misinterpreting Merck's words as well ....here is his quote about the negotiations.

"The record company refused to conclude the renegotiation until we were READY to hand over the FINISHED album and refused to prepare a marketing campaign or commission video treatments until they had it in their hands. This is still their position as of this week."

Two parts to the equation....album is finished and ready to be handed over, thus they are negotiating. Matches up with what Beta and Mysteron said. Now, the second part is after the renogotiation they will work on marketing, video etc. Translation...Axl hasn't given them the record.

I think it is way more complicated than that....I don't know all the ins and outs but the label is at risk when they advance money. If no official product is finished, then they eat all the advances given. They also bailed on the project in 2004 so the completed album was done on Axl's dime. That muddies the water considerably. And, I would like to see Universal's list of artists with 90 million records sold worldwide with only 4 albums of original material...pretty short one I imagine. They still have to deal with Axl on the back catalog so it is in their best interest to placate him some. It is a huge clusterfuck. However, it is good news to have the band say things appear to be going well. 22 I honestly don't think that was smoke up our ass because Mysteron said that before the Robin thing. I also honestly believe they have a finished album that they want to release. Azoff wouldn't have signed on for nothing. No bullshit this time.:P
