"Rolling Stone magazine named them "Best Live Band in America" 8 years running durring the 80's. I believe it was 8 years."
Bono, I call bullshit on that one. I like to see a Rolling Stone source for that. I was in college in the mid eighties and subscribed to Rolling Stone-never remembered that. First of all, no one I knew in the Athens, Ga scene (which was fairly large at the time with REM) ever even mentioned SA. Everything on college radio focused around REM, The Replacements, The Cure, U2, Husker Du, etc.
So, please show a little documentation if you are going to make bold claims. A lot of great american bands during that time frame. I could be wrong, but I just don't remember it.
When SA reissues their entire catalog and starts receiving pretty substantial features in Billboard, Spin and almost every other credible music publication, you let me know. SA is not nearly as influential and critically acclaimed. Please show me any list of greatest albums of all time or greatest albums of the 80's that even has a SA record on it. You will always see 1 or 2 Replacements records. I am not saying SA is bad band, just not quite on the same level with the Mats. Of course, that is my opinion only.
Here are a couple of lists from two different publications that are fairly credible. The Pitchfork list is good. However, any of the 100 could be interchangeable in order depending on your preference. No SA-WHAT ? The best live band of the 80's with that great songwriter with no classic albums? The Replacements have 2 albums on the Rolling Stone list in the top 250 and 3 albums in the top 100 for Pitchfork. My opinion is shared by others. I could get more lists if you would like, but I am at least providing some sources to back up my claims.

it's not about Axl and I am not making comparisons...he has plenty of his own issues.:haha:

standing on top of a Volkswagon with a top hat on and playing guitar is a bit much....did he need the money that bad? Did he need to sponsor Black Death vodka? Playing in bands, doing session work, and even the guitar hero thing is fine. But he has turned into a bit of a media whore. I think he does daily interviews at this point....over exposure isn't good. Sorry I don't agree with you guys.

sometimes yes...sometimes no.

Soul Asylum was basically a poor man's Replacements. SA didn't have near the swagger and panache the Mats had....and they didn't have Bob Stinson.

and for the record, Axl has no "vision" at all....throwing 30 musicians in a room and splattering the wall with paint is not a "vision". It's chaos.:haha:
ps and the other thing that cracks me up is the assumption that if Slash and Axl got back together, it would somehow work on an artistic level. Last I checked, Axl and Slash couldn't make a record of original material from 92-98. Axl didn't jive with much of his shit either. Slash, Bucket, Robin, The Gardener...doesn't matter who is playing guitar if the person who wants to be responsible for the project can't decide what he wants. Why would 2008 be different?:headbang:

for the record, I'm not praising either one of them at this point. They both have done nothing after Gnr that is remotely great in my opinion.:butt:

once cool...now cheese. I don't like anything he has done after Guns. Sorry Neemo. I do think Slash and Axl, like Tommy and Westerberg, still have something to offer each other. However, what was cool in 1985 and 1987, most likely won't be cool now....pure nostalgia. Personally, I think it is better to create with new musicians at this point. Unfortunately, the only guy with enough talent to execute Axl's vision left in 2004.:(

if the money is right, Slash is your bitch....video games, commercials, vodka, session work with Michael Jackson, selling out to the modern rock crap....SOLD OUT...he's a whore at this point. Unfortunately, I think Axl could use a good lay.
