I'm staggered at the attitude here. We get it there's 350 million guns in America and making guns and ammo illegal today won't change that number tomorrow, but it will change that number in 20/50 years. How can it not make a difference long term?
Clearly there is more than one problem/issue here, and it won't stop this kind of thing happening as we've seen in other countries but it might reduce the frequency of this type of event and the numbers that die each time. How can that not be worth exploring?
It would seem unfortunately that (at least from what I've read in this thread) your right to bear arms is more important to you than the safety of your loved ones. If (and I may be totally wrong) that is a widely shared view across the US you will continue to suffer these tragedies.
These regular mass shootings we see in the US are mimickery, the next psycho is just copying the last one, how the fuck do you go about weeding out the guys who might be likely to do it? I can't even begin to imagine where you would start, what you can begin to do is try and make their access to weapons that can kill masses of people in seconds a bit harder.
How many more of these tragedies must you suffer before something changes?

Obviously in the UK it's our Royal Family so the constant coverage is kind of expected but I know it would hack me off if they weren't our royal family. That's another point though if there wasn't such obsessive media coverage of the royals then things like the prank phone call wouldn't happen. If such a circus didn't follow the royal family around this probably wouldn't have happened.
Supposedly they weren't even going to break the news of the pregnancy until around christmas but someone had found out and was going to leak it on twitter, so they had to come out and announce she was pregnant and in hospital.

They're saying up to 27 could be dead on UK news.
Just awful.

Even if the hospital gave her a complete roasting it's still irrelevant imo. Firstly I'm guessing she fucked up in the first place by putting the call through to the ward (bearing in mind she didn't divulge any information just put the call through, it was another nurse who revealed details) she should have screened the caller better. Given the circumstances the hospital would have been within their rights to disipline both nurses. Either way a wife and mother of two hanging yourself as a result of cocking up at work disgusts me along with the witch hunt of the two DJ's.

A nurse at the hospital caring for the Duchess of Cambridge, who took a hoax call from DJs, is found dead at a London address.
A nurse duped by a prank phone call at the hospital treating the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge has died in a suspected suicide.
Jacintha Saldanha, 46, who has worked at the hospital for four years, was found dead at an address near King Edward VII's hospital in London on Friday morning.
The hospital confirmed she had been the victim of a hoax call in which two Australian DJs, pretending to be the Queen and Prince of Wales, phoned up about Kate.
Ms Saldanha, a mother of two, received the call and put it through to the ward where another nurse updated the pair on the Duchess, who was being treated for severe morning sickness.
Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the nurse was from Bristol and has a son and a daughter. "The hospital had not suspended Ms Saldanha, nor disciplined her," he added.
Her family said in a statement: "We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha."
The owners of the radio station say the two DJs behind the call are "deeply shocked" by the tragedy. They have been dropped from their show until further notice amid a major backlash.
The Duke and Duchess leaving the hospital on Thursday
Kate, who is understood to be well under 12 weeks pregnant, was admitted to the hospital on Monday after falling ill over the weekend and released again on Thursday.
The Duchess and her husband, William, the Duke of Cambridge, said in a statement that they were "deeply saddened" by the nurse's death.
"Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time," they said.
A St James's Palace spokesman added: "At no point did the Palace complain to the hospital about the incident. On the contrary, we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times."
The King Edward VII Hospital said: "It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.
"Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII's Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.
"We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time."
Hospital chief executive John Lofthouse said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies at this time are with her family and friends. Everyone is shocked by the loss of a much-loved and valued colleague."
Police going into nurses' accommodation at the hospital
Lord Glenarthur, the hospital's chairman, said: "This is a tragic event. Jacintha was a first class nurse who cared diligently for hundreds of patients during her time with us. She will be greatly missed."
Dr Peter Carter, chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, added: "This is tragic news, and the thoughts of all at the Royal College of Nursing go to the family of Jacintha Saldanha.
"It is deeply saddening that a simple human error due to a cruel hoax could lead to the death of a dedicated and caring member of the nursing profession."
Police were called to the address at 9.35am on Friday after a report about a woman found unconscious. Paramedics rushed to the property but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident. The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage."
Michael Christian and Mel Greig, DJs on the 2DayFM radio station, broadcast their call to the hospital on Wednesday morning.
Greig, impersonating the Queen, asked to speak to her "granddaughter Catherine" and managed to persuade Ms Saldanha to put her through to the ward where Kate was being treated.
The security breach was deeply embarrassing for the hospital, which is the medical institution of choice for the Royal Family.

I realise this is last weeks news but I wondering what peoples take on it was.
It feels like I'm in the minority but I feel seriously sorry for the two DJ's here, there's talk of prosecution/jail, moving them to safehouses due to death threats being received. Perhaps I'm being insensitive but for me the nurse has acted both selfishly and completely irrationally. The way some people are going on you'd think suicide was a very common and real consequence of prank calls by radio stations and they should have considered this in advance.

Again I find Fix You uplifting rather than sad. The Scientist though definitely a sad song, one of my friends a few years ago had the Scientist as he and his girlfriends song, it was not pretty when they broke up and it got played on the radio!

This list is bad. Not saying those aren't sad songs, but I can think of a few huge omissions.
Tears in Heaven by Clapton?
Hurt by NIN? (Or Cash)How are those songs not on there?
What about Nutshell by AIC? Not only are the lyrics sad, but its Laynes most emotional performance.
I gave up on RS a long time ago. They are far past relevance.
Replace 4, 5 and 9 with these songs and the list becomes better. The order is a whole different issue.
To be fair it isn't RS's list, just a list they've taken from a some scientists.
I still think it's odd though, I've always thought Angels was kinda uplifting.
REM - Everybody Hurts would be in the list for me, made me bawl like a baby once although I was listening to it in fairly sad circumstances.

Beta is credited for bass and triangle on CD 2.
I heard she also shares lead vocals on the studio version of The Seeker, which will be the first single.

Flipnosis by Kevin Dutton has a couple of interesting chapters on psychopaths if it's a line of reading you're in to.
The main thing I took from it was (and I'm sure it's far more complex than this clinically) that psychopaths just don't have the same physiological and physical reactions to pressure that the rest of us do. Monitor the brain of someone in a high pressure scenario and certain areas light up, responsible for adrenaline release etc, in a psychopath those areas stay dormant, being under high pressure has no effect on how they function seemingly. Which I guess explains how a lot of them rise to the top as CEO's/surgeons etc. The other thing was that it's worth remembering not all psychopaths are bad people, in fact the majority probably aren't, but a large proportion of bad people are psychopaths.
It wouldn't surprise me if a large number of elite sportsmen were shown to have psychopathic traits as well.
