What negotiation? How are they going to pay for it? They already said slashing entitlements is the only way.
When there's a hurricane predicted by a meteorologist to hit your house, sure. Right now you're sitting around with no meteorology knowledge or experience predicting a hurricane hitting your house though, and that's idiotic.
I'm in the middle of a vacation so I've been absent. Let me say this, I'm from Florida, I'm not a weather man but experience makes me smarter than the average bear.
I'm not against tax cuts, I'm not anti pro America, but I know the games politicians play. And when Paul Ryan as s he's going after entitlements next, I believe him. That's why he just made a hole in the debt.
We're not talking about the weather though; we're talking about something you know nothing about, yet you're in full panic mode already because of something somebody said. Let's see what happens. People like me aren't going to support SS going away, so wait and see what happens.

What system? This is the way it’s been for all of my adult life. I have no recollection of a time where almost everything that’s been going on hadn’t been totally fuked. I’ve always assumed this is the only way it can be.
The first election i was old enough to be aware of and understand was Gore v. Bush. I remember a people so divided that it tools months to be sure who won.
I remember that being a culmination of people being so upset about what Bill did in the White House abusing his power with women. When i learned that the man beating the war drum against Clinton and the Democrats was an even more sleazy man in Newt Gingrich...Gingrich, a man who traded wives in to the pot like he was playing ‘go-fish.’
In my life...almost everything political from the national level has been a joke. From 9/11 and the stupid response by bush and a never ending Iraq war to the economy crashing and bailing out the assholes that fucked us over.
The only glimmer of a good idea that i could ever get behind was the healthcare overhaul. Otherwise, everything else has been utter shit for the better part of 20 years.
So i ask again...what system else is there?
The system used to work; it's not my fault you're too young to remember that. They used to work together for 3 years, then fight for one when the presidential election was happening. I was young then (Reagan is the first President I have a memory of and honestly the first thing I remember was the assassination attempt). That probably ended with the Clinton impeachment, though I didn't really notice it until later as I wasn't paying much attention to politics at the time.
I think we need a third party...I've thought that for a while. Just something to force more working together for ALL of the people instead of pandering to the extremes on both sides. No healthcare overhaul is going to work until they address the escalating costs. It's like a game right now. Insurance companies negotiate costs down, so providers do things like requiring additional office visits or tests to make up the money they are losing. Obamacare did nothing to address the actual problem; all it did was forcefeed feelgood things that aren't sustainable. I'm 100% for true healthcare reform. That doesn't mean single payer and that doesn't mean the gov't running everything. That means addressing the cost of healthcare. I don't know what the answer is. I know limiting lawsuits on malpractice would help, but that alone won't solve it. Drugs are ridiculously expensive. Premiums are ridiculously expensive. Deductibles are ridiculously high to the point that even work policies are little more than catastrophic care plans. The insurance companies aren't the issue; the gov't regulates how much they can profit on premiums, and it's not a lot. They make their money investing the premiums, so with the market doing so well, of course their profits are up.
I am fine with the tax cuts. They help most people. They will not make it as-is to expiration. I am not a fan of all the panicking without knowing what is going to happen. If you have to pass it to see what it is was good enough for our healthcare, it's fine for this. If they follow this up by finding a way to limit people living off of the gov't, I am fine with that. If they follow this with attacking social security and other programs that people have paid into, that's not going to fly. Let's see what happens before flipping out for once.

I'm going to hopefully go see this again this weekend. My thoughts haven't really changed since seeing it the first time. I get why they did what they did (even the things I didn't like), but there was one thing they shouldn't have done that not only ruins this movie for me, but it ruins episode 9 for me before it begins.

Possibly is the point. It's more fear-mongering. If (and I understand this isn't a given) the cuts translate into more jobs and/or higher salaries, the government could break even or possibly come out ahead. Now I am not saying that will happen, but it certainly could. All of this panicking for the sake of panicking is getting ridiculous. It's the boy that cried wolf at this point...even if they had a point, half of the country isn't even listening to what they say. At least there's a chance of coming out ahead in this case, where there's no chance with the democratic spending.
Here's what I think will happen. In the short term, jobs will increase and salaries will as well (whether that's base salaries or increased bonuses), but eventually the trickle down will stop trickling down. That eventually will probably be sooner rather than later.
Here's what we know: companies are in business to make money. As soon as they stop making money, they close. When they close, the little guy is hurt far more than everybody else. The more skilled you are, the less likely you are to be significantly hurt by changes in the economy. The key to being okay is to be an owner of a successful business. The next best thing is being skilled at something. If you're at the bottom just getting by and not making an effort to be skilled, you're taking all control out of your hands and relying on everyone else to keep you afloat. That's a dangerous place to be.

If you didn’t care about the debt when Obama was running it up, you don't get to complain about it now. I know I posted this in one of these threads, but liberals love to cry about climate change and how we can't ruin things for future generations while having no issue with running up the debt for future generations. You don't get to cry about the debt just because you liked where the money was going before and don't like where it's going now.

Some sort of reform is needed. It should happen. No more free rides for the lazy. The problem is going to be how to establish who is lazy and who genuinely needs the help. I don't have an easy answer for that. Full drug testing isn't cost effective, though some sort of random testing (just the threat of it) would be okay in my book. There's a solution somewhere, but someone smarter than I am will have to figure it out.
My only problem with drug testing is how it impacts children. Mommy smokes a joint (not even considering the states where it's medically or recreationally legal), fails her test, and is denied assistance. What about her kids? We have a huge opioid crisis in this country and while I have little sympathy for those who go down this dark path (and my own brother has done so), letting people die in the streets isn't a real answer. People with nothing to lose tend to act on it.
That's why to your point, the left pretending Republicans are going to end entitlements and millions will be lined up at soup kitchens is hogwash. It's not going to happen. But if we could bring some sanity to how we dole out money and what strings are attached to it, I'm all about having that discussion.
Are you okay with deporting the illegal kids? I am, but given your stance above I am curious as to your thoughts on kids and immigration.
If we're playing my perfect world, marijuana would be legal and taxed, so the kid would be fine. If you're doing stronger stuff, the kids are going to be taken away from the mother anyway.

Randall Flagg wrote:I've been abstaining from the discussion because tax law is something I am very ignorant on, but I was listening to McConnell's press briefing yesterday and his comment was if we grow the economy
I honestly believe the left isn't interested in making America a competitive country.
.
Putting America first doesn’t necessarily mean putting everyone in America first. There some big winners and some losers in this new deal.
If the tax cut was a little bit more equal in its treatment of everyone and their supposed tax cut then I can get much more on board with this but I don’t see that happening. It is not objectively true that everyone is going to receive some form of a cut. There are some tax brackets that went up a ticker two.
Now here’s the part where he says “the standard deduction is doubled right? And then I’ll come back and say well then the whole thing is a fucking wash then isn’t it?
There are many different ways to put America first. This put some Americans first not everyone.
There are people getting paid just to exist in this country. They contribute absolutely nothing to society. They've been put first long enough. It's time for that to end. Helping those that legitimately need the help is wonderful. The rest of them can earn it like the rest of us or charity can pick up the slack of supporting them. The gov't needs to get out of that business.
