Matheny is good buddies with Pujols. The Cards might've just guaranteed Pujols being a Card for life. However money still remains a BIG issue. Pujols has been giving them a discount for YEARS (I think he only made $15 million this past season; ARod makes DOUBLE that). Rumor had it that the Cards offered Pujols $24.5 million a season at the beginning of the season, and Pujols turned it down. This was before he won another ring though, and his buddy was now managing the team.

Pujols could probably get more money than ARod on the open market, probably like $32.5mil a season. Would he take that kind of pay cut, with the LAST CHANCE he has to make a 'big contract', to stay with his buddy and be immortalized in St. Louis? Is it worth losing $80-$100 million over the span of a decade?

I don't think he needs his buddy THAT bad imo. So there's a good chance Pujols will be wearing blue or orange next season. Rumor has it also tho, that the Marlins didn't make a really serious offer to Pujols though. Just showed they were willing to negotiate and did want him in Miami.

From what I recall reading, the Cards wont increase their offer of 9 years and 210 million dollars.  So if someone else wants to offer more he'd almost have to consider it.  I think it's kinda dumb to state that publicly.

I guess they're betting that Albert has gotten comfortable in STL and would take less money to remain a Cardinal for life.  The thing is though I would have thought that they would have reached an agreement before the season started.  All that did was make him more receptive to other teams offers at the end of the years.

I was looking over their roster and payroll and without Albert this team is pretty average.  I'm not sure why on earth they're paying Kyle Loshe 12.1 million dollars.

If by some chance Pujols does leave, they almost have to look at Prince Fielder.  I'm interested in seeing who actually bids on Fielder.  Not many teams need a 1B.  Texas and Seattle come to mind.  Seattle's GM was in Milwaukee when he was drafted and their offense sucked last year.  The ballpark is OK for LH hitters.  It's RH hitters that get their power depressed.

Aram should consider signing with the Angels.  He can play 3rd and DH there as well.

I know Loria wants to make a big splash with the new ballpark, new name, new look Marlins like they are gonna be a serious competitor against the Phillies & Braves in the NL East, and they very well might, but...

No way do I see Pujols signing with the Fish. I think Prince Fielder might be more up their alley. Unless Loria offers Pujols the full 8-year / $320 million dollar deal and throws up Miami, the hispanic culture, and Ozzie Guillen being his manager as the reasons to do it in a now "Tony LaRussa-less" MLB.

I still don't see him doing it. Pujols is gonna want to go where the spotlight is at, and that's NOT the Marlins, even with a new attitude. As to where that will be, we'll... Chicago, Boston, and LA are all good guesses. Yankees don't need him, and the Mets... shit... the Marlins would be a better option. St. Louis ain't gonna go that high, even if Pujols comes down to $30mil a year.

Yeah, it looks like one of those things where I think they'll say they tried but got turned down.

The market for Pujols is kinda weird because the Yankees and Red Sox aren't really in it.  I could see the Angels sneaking in there, but they gotta trim a bunch of payroll.  The owner said that the payroll would remain the same so if they want to sign Pujols they gotta move some people.  Makes the Vernon Wells-Napoli trade even stupider in retrospect.

Don't see the Rangers getting in it.  The Mets will be doing the opposite as they'll lose Reyes and trade Wright for a bunch of prospects.  Here's one you didn't mention:  Washington Nationals.  They got money and are in a big market.  They overpaid Werth last year and they're still looking for something to hook in the fans.  The drawback is the home park is a pitcher's park.  Too bad the White Sox have a bunch of bad contracts on the books as this is the type of gamble Kenny Williams likes to make.

If he leaves STL, Cubs (they got a ton of cash coming off the books), Nationals or LAA would be the frontrunners.

Heard an interesting rumor today.

Turns out that whole "Washington Secret Child Pedophile Society" thing that's been around for years.... was involved here.

The rumor also is Paterno hired a Criminal Attorney, not for the obvious reasons, and more dirt is gonna come out in the weeks & months ahead that shows Paterno was involved in the society, and the cover up went all the way up to the top, like with the Washington stuff. The guy who tried to uncover the whole thing and pushed Penn State in 2005 apparently "suddenly" went missing 2005, and hasn't been seen since.

Sorry I don't know more, but I thought it was an intriguing rumor. If true, it'll be HUGE.

I heard a similar rumor except it was that Sandusky was running a pedophile sex ring and whoring out those kids to the highest paying donors of that Second Mile foundation that he ran.

Paterno is definitely involved here as there is no way this shit would go on without his knowledge.  I find it interesting that after he gets investigated in 1998 he gets forced out the following year.  Keep in mind that he had always been seen as the coach in waiting for Penn St.  Even more curious is that he didn't coach anywhere after that.  He was relatively young (55 or so) when he retired.  I think he won some coaching award that year too for best asistant or something.  Even shitty coaches get jobs at lower level schools.

Another rumor I've read is that the grad assistant was also a victim of sexual abuse.  I'm not sure I believe that one though.

Looks like Papelbon is leaving the Sox to sign with the Phillies.  He's good, but he's not THAT good.  Philly is overpaying for him, but someone always does in free agency.  That's the name of the game.

The Phillies deserve to be ripped off. No closer/relief pitcher in the history of God and man, deserves ANY KIND of deal that pays them into the double-digits per year, including legends like Trevor Hoffman & Mariano Rivera.

WHY? They are a RELIEVER! Why should a pitcher, who only has to get THREE OUTS 4-5 games a week, makes right at or more money than a Starter?

It's just a brain dead proposition to me and it always has been.

The Phils will never EVER get their money's worth out of that deal. Never. Papelbon is a VERY good closer, but anytime one of these relievers get a huge deal in Free Agency, it never pays off for the team who signed them.

My thoughts exactly.  The Pirates have had a shitty team for the last twenty years and they usually just recycle guys from the trash heap.  They usually end up signing a bunch of guys who have some sort of good track record to minor league deals.  That's one of the few things they've done well.

I guess what most teams don't realize is that relief pitching is very volitale.  It's very high risk to be handing out multi year contracts to a guy whose stats could be replicated by another player for far less.

The Phillies must be made of money or something.  They always seem to spend every offseason.  They still have to sign Rollins and add an OF.  And yet with all these signings, they only have 1 World Series title to show for it.

I actually think the orange alternate jersey's look pretty bad ass. I don't like the big M, but I do like the new Marlin itself logo. Real art deco-inspired. Real cool.

I was looking at this and it just hit me this shade of orange looks a lot like the stuff the Hurricanes wear.

I like it a lot better now when I first saw it.  At least it's not bad like the late 80s early 90s Bucs orange uniforms.   The new logo looks pretty cool though as you say.

And yes their defense is bad, has been bad, and is not getting better any time soon.  I don't get it.  I've been screaming for years for them to get a pass rusher.  This off-season they revamped their D-line (cut Haynesworth today), but none of them were pass rushers outside of Andre Carter and Mark Anderson.  And those guys, while solid at times, are not difference makers.  Unfortunately the Patriots offense has been uncharacteristically bad the past month, especially Tom Brady.  He's just making some really bad throws and decisions.  But, I think the offense will be fine, they'll work out the kinks.  Can't say the same for the defense.  In the end though, this team is going nowhere in the playoffs, IF they even get there.  Same team as the last 2 years that will lose to any team that can slow their offense down.  Just look at the last two weeks against Pitt and NYG.  They are wasting Brady's prime years with this piss poor defense they're sending out there.  I don't get it!

Haynesworth got claimed by the Bucs yesterday.  Anyway, I root the Titans I think they have just as bad a pass rush as the Pats do.  It's frustrating on 3rd down when the quarterback has all day to throw.  The Titans have good corners this year and you can't really expect anyone for 5+ seconds on every down.

I remember watching the NE-OAK game and Jason Campbell had pretty much all day to throw in the game.  On several plays, he had close to 10 seconds to throw and no one from the Pats was even close to him.  The Pats can get away this with lesser or average teams because Tom Brady masks a lot of their problems.

They've also missed on a lot of defensive draft picks over the past few years.  The upcoming draft isn't going to yield much help if they're looking for a 4-3 DE.  Don't know about 3-4 olb/edge rushers though.  Wilfork and Mayo are the only guys that I would say are good on the front seven.  Carter too but I think he's too old.  They need another S after Merriweather didn't work out.

I think Chad Johnson is done.  Second straight year he's played poorly.

You're a Cubs fan Axlin? Thoughts on Theo?

He did a great job rebuilding the Sox depleted farm system, but his big ticket free agent signings were terrible. I hope for your sake, he changes his mindset on the free agent side of things. All in all though, I can't complain about 2 WS championships during his tenure, which he obviously had a lot to do with. Made some great trades during his time too.

Did they ever annonce the compensation part of the deal? I never heard anything.

I don't think they did.  I think they're still haggling over compensation.  Apparently, Bud'll have to make a decision.  I think Matsuzaka might be the worst one of the FA signings.  They had to pay/win out a 50 million posting fee and had to give him a 52 million contract.  All for a guy that is essentially a 4th or 5th starter who seems to get injured annually.

OTOH, he really can't get any worse than Hendry in the latter part of his GM duties with the Cubs.  He gave Soriano that contract and signed Milton Bradley.

Interesting stuff about the Marlins.  The Buehrle and Ozzie connection to the White Sox make sense.  I think Reyes is probably gone from the Mets if he hits FA.  The Brewers are also interested.  Marlins are supposed to be interested in Aramis Ramirez as well.

On the new Marlins ballpark--I'm interested in whether or not it is a hitter's park or a pitcher's park.

Oh yeah, they should have never changed the logo.  I liked the old logo a LOT better.

Not a big Cardinal fan, and personally i'll always remember Tony managing in an A's uniform, especially those great teams of the late 80's, but this is truely the most perfect "going out on top" story i've ever heard. Not only do you stage a comeback during the regular season to basically win the wild card on the last day of the season to get into the playoffs on the last game, BUT you go on to stage another comeback down to your last OUT in a World Series, to win it.

Just an amazing story. Congrats to Tony and best of luck in the future.

Whenever I think about his A's tenure, I think about the 1988 and 1990 World Series losses.  I think more fondly about his Cardinals tenure.  I believe 3 World Series appearance in 8 years is very impressive given the unpredictablility of the MLB playoffs. Off the field, LaRussa  is an interesting guy.  He is a vegan who listens to heavy metal.

The only thing that irks me about LaRussa is how he is sometimes started beanball wars on incidental stuff.  Hit one of his guys by accident and he'll order retallion and start shit.  Same thing with plays at second base.  Take out the second baseman on a perfectly legal play and he'll order his team to retalliate.  There was that one time a few years ago where they had this nasty game with the Cubs and Dusty Baker got really pissed at him.

Not mentioned in the thread--Ryan Howard blowing out his achilles after the NLDS division loss.  I don't really know how they're going to replace him since their payroll is pretty high.

Grady Sizemore is a good buy low candidate for an AL team.

Tebow should be made into a wildcat QB/HB/Slot WR. They could actually do some good with him on certain plays, especially in the Red Zone, but The Bronco's are making really strange decisions as of late.

And I predict they'll make an EXPLOSIVE trade offer for Luck. I hope The Dolphins take the top spot and make the trade. I'm not sold on Luck.

He'll be gone by the end of next year at the latest.  McDaniels really screwed that franchise with all the shitty personnel moves.

You really think the Dolphins would trade the rights to Luck?  I wouldn't unless another team gave me 3 #1 draft picks.  With the draft cap, #1 draft picks are very cap friendly.  The team hasn't had a qb since Marino retired after 1999.  Luck has some warts but so do all QBs.  I think you're wrong on this one--Sparano gets dumped and the new coach gets to coach Luck.  The one caveat I would say is that Luck could "pull an Eli" and refuse to play there forcing a trade.

As long as Luck doesn't end up with the Colts, I'm going to be happy.
