Yeah I've been frustrated partially because I love everything.

Like old GNR was my favourite band growing up - so the old band stuff is untouchable to me - just classics.

Then I really liked the songwriting on CD, I found Madagascar really inspirational lyrics, loved the vocals on TWAT, and a whole lot of other moments.

To be honest I even enjoy the controversial semi-industrial and experimental stuff like Oh My God, Silkworms, Shacklers, Scraped etc - as their own thing. I know it's not classic GNR, but if I get past the expectations, whatever they are I enjoy them - even the venom of silkworms I find strangely compelling at times.

What gets to me is it seems so pointless that things remain hidden, we got *some* of the CD tracks but as you say - mixed questionably and with the wrong artwork, and many of the other tracks remain in the shadows.

Meanwhile we didn't get a return to classic GNR yet either.

I know it sounds demanding and they don't owe me or whatever. I just can't get the idea out of my head that the clock is ticking and there's just so much good stuff either locked or away or that simply could have been that it seems so damn wasteful. It actually even makes me depressed I think.

Perhaps I need therapy but then I think we all do or we wouldn't post about GNR for decades hahahah

Axl seemed to have some sort of ambitious machiavellian plan releasing 3 albums back in 2001, now he has everything he needs to actually do it.

Indeed. And I still believe he has the skills and the ability.

God there's marvels he could do. Even the CD songs remixed with Slash and Duff would be interesting to me....which seems absurd save for that they were already doing remixes with DJ and brain and so on so it's not like those songs are necessarily untouchable.

Moreover...while I know CD was a controversial album...to me melody wise and lyrics wise...I loved Axl's parts a lot.

I believe as an artist he would still have gas in the tank.

I just don't understand why they don't pull the trigger.

I mean I'd bet the vault is full of interesting stuff, and if not, it's not like that Ac/Dc fronting Axl and modern shredgod Slash couldn't make something amazing if they wanted to.

I take Axl at his word that he said he does want to release music one day. I just hope that day comes soon...before my health or theirs gives out.

Exactly.

You want the band to know what we know - that they will never find others as perfectly suited for their styles as each other - that the chemistry between the old band is 1 in a billion, that it's a work of fate, god, the universe, chance or just magical that they found each other growing up and it happened.

But instead there's a sense that rather than appreciate that themselves - what they really know is that *we* think that.

Axl even said the DJ/Bumble band was his favourite incarnation of the line up recently.

It breaks my heart to say it....but Unlike Black Ice or an album like that which came about because the founders had the desire to work together again, and when they did they recaptured that special something....and they still had something to say....

so far the way things are rolling in this camp just feels like this came about for finance....like Axl realised the only way to keep the lifestyle he wanted with promoters was to call Slash....and Slash realised that after his divorce it would make the best sense for his career to stop letting others tarnish his back catalogue.

I pray that I'm wrong and something else artistic happens sooner or later. But there's something very cynical about the way everything is executed to me sadly.

I agree in a sense...I mean obviously this tour will sell on it's own merits, but I also can't help but look to the examples of others that packaged a reunion album that went gangbusters with the tour. Ac/Dc's "Black Ice" era for example.

GNR don't HAVE to do this, like they don't HAVE to vary the setlist live and they don't HAVE to shell out to have Matt or Izzy or anyone.

It just seems they always do the minimum needed these days, which isn't what the band used to be like. Once they did crazy stuff like release UYI 1 and 2 together on the same day. These days it seems if we can get away with having less we always do. It just doesn't feel vital to me anymore. I love the music, and I know money has always been part of the equation with these things, but there's something not quite right about all this at the moment too. Something about the way it is being handled is bothering me. Can't quite put my finger on it.

That's irrelevant.

Cornshucker, Shadow Of Your Love, etc. were recorded but they were also garbage and throw in the dumpster pile.

The main question in the labels mind is going to be: Will it make money? The second question they'll ask is: Does this live up to the GN'R brand? That is, will it damage or improve the Guns N' Roses brand value - make us less money or more money?

Well I'm not saying release every idea Axl had, but with 2 albums spare from 2006, more recording done in 2012, and more done again at the start of this year....and probably other sessions that didn't make the media too....I find it doubtful that there are only Cornshuckers left and not a single release worthy track.

As for it damaging the brand....that might have been a consideration with fink at the helm, but it's not with Slash. Look at the way he plays songs like Chinese Democracy, Better, and This I Love live - a way which immediately made them more consistent with the back catalogue. It would be very easy to get him and duff to rock up some ideas from the vault too.

What actually damages GNR's credibility is the perception that they are not creatively vital as a band, that they are a nostalgia act, that they haven't written a song since replacing half the band with live session players - all of this type of negative thinking would be put to bed with a single. Hell even A "Rock or Bust" style throw away track where both Axl and Slash sounded old school would win over the masses.

So from the label's point of view - they already mostly paid for the next record - so anything that it sells will be pure profit - and lets face it - even an under-peforming GNR record would outsell unknown new bands and similar risks that the label might otherwise invest in. Meanwhile with Slash and Axl helming the band...it's highly doubtful a new album would tank....actually it's more likely to be embraced by those wanting to relive the era...such as how both Ac/Dc's black Ice, and Metallica's recent album were warmly received as returns to form.

Wagszilla wrote:

So if you're the record company and the market hated CD, why release CD II?

Because the recordings are already 90% paid for.

The best buy deal recouped all the costs associated with the Chinese Democracy recording sessions - which not only included the album we got but the mythical second and third album tracks that sit in a vault.

Any further recording would be minor - Slash could over dub some new solos in a matter of days.

This means to put out that album the label is not up for any more recording costs, only mixing and mastering which is pocket change to them - so with the album already paid for - the sales it does are basically gravy for them.

What they might be nervous about is shelling out for a full scale marketing campaign, and I would wager that was the hold up for the previous incarnation of the band - Axl probably wanted a full scale commitment worthy of the GNR brand but the label was thinking it was more of a boutique project.

Now with a reunion tour doing crazy money, and Slash back in the fold, the demand is there for new product, the label would be much more willing to talk about proper marketing. Especially if the product also involved a AFD remaster or a hits disc as part of it or something that would be guaranteed to move some units.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got an album completely unannounced at this point. Long post i know, but am i just rabid, or right?

Hopefully you're right.

Trying to be objective - all the guns are loaded in a way, all signs point to something before this time next year:

* Whatever label negativity surrounding a new GNR record would have dissipated with the return of Slash.

* Axl said he wanted to release new music, and Slash and Duff always want to make records.

* Axl has around 2 semi-finished Chinese Records done from 2006 (atlas, slikworms etc). He's also got CD1 remixes to play with.  There's also the unused material from 1996 or whenever it was Slash was still around. Then there's the DJ ashba riffs Axl was working on vocals for in 2012. Then there's the Slash riffs Richard mentioned working on. Meanwhile Slash was said to be recording for GNR at the start of the year. So basically the vaults are fucking overflowing with potential GNR releases.

* Next year is the anniversary of AFD, providing a wonderful chance to drop a remastered version or package that with some new songs, or an EP or a full on Album as a double pack.

So basically everything points to something happening soon.

Then again, I don't need to tell you guys that the history of GNR for the past 20 years is a history of not taking advantage of situations. A friend joked to me the other day that if you intentionally wanted the CD era to fail and brainstormed ways to make it happen you'd some out with a list a lot like what they chose to do during that time. Axl seems in good spirits at the moment with Ac/Dc and all...so lets hope those days are behind us.

So to me it's kinda an even chance. It would be utterly insane if they didn't put out a record....but then again.....this is GNR.....you can never assume they will act in their own interests!

It's crazy how fast the hype/excitement fizzled .

Don't get me wrong, I'm as happy as anyone that Axl and Slash are back together.

I don't even know how to put what I think about all this without setting off the GNR camp's "entitled fans" feelings....but as a person who thinks genuinely that Axl and Slash are amongst the most talented people on the entire planet...I'm about wanting as much of that art to come about before life takes one of them as possible.

It's not that they owe me, or that we deserve it, or that they have to, or that they work for me, or any of that, and yes I should live my own life - it's just statistically we're probably in the last 10 to 15 years of the GNR story now, and it would be a god-aweul shame if it ended without anything else when they are so capable of so much more.

If we can be honest, we endured 30 years of nonsense and a war between half the band that was entirely unnecessary.

It resulted in the limited GNR work we got to not be either quite like what it would have with the old band, and, thanks to whatever industry nonsense, we never really heard quite what Axl wanted to do either.

Likewise many of Slash's works as much as I think they are wonderful could have been elevated without the nonsense we've all become used to over 30 years.

So yes, GNR is back, but they're 30 years behind schedule, there's a lost Axl/Slash album from the 90s, there's 2 more Chinese Era axl albums, there's what he recorded with DJ in 2012, there's what Slash recorded at the start of the year.

There is an absolute shit ton of stuff, but if you're like me you know the hourglass of fate is ticking on us all, it's beyond time for some progress. I love the shows and I'm looking forward to going to this tour, and I'm sure everyone is in their home town, and it's nice the reunion actually happened.

I love all that stuff. But at the same time it doesn't satisfy  the burning desire for more art I have. The more they recreate the glory days of 1991 the more than I realise how lacking the earth is of what actually made those days wonderful - not the tours - but that GNR was an artistically active entity.

the lack of tracks is quite absurd

Cause Yesterday’s got nothing for me
Old setlists that you’ll always see
time just harms the vocals

Audience keeps on begging for rasp
someone tell them this ain’t Ac/Dc

some of them are only heard, on the alternative lists that the band display
