#121 Re: Guns N' Roses » Guns N' Roses & related STUDIO SESSIONS - a definitive collection (?) » 374 weeks ago

“I was really happy with a lot of the material and I think we went in to do basic tracks and with a new drummer we did 36 songs in 36 days, so we weren’t fucking around,” says Slash. “After the basic tracks were done, I’d spend three weeks doing guitars, which for 30 songs was actually pretty fast. I was sometimes doing two songs in one day. But everything hit a brick wall when it came to doing the synthesizer stuff, and I never agreed with doing the synthesizer stuff anyway. Although I think some of it is brilliant, it was part of the new way, which was the beginning of the end. That was the beginning of the whole process taking forever. It was like a lot of days were not working, some days it was working, and most of the record was finished. It didn’t really need all the rest of it. That was the biggest disagreement for me.”

Izzy Stradlin was also exiling himself, distanced by the scale of the recording. “I did the basic tracks, then he [Slash] did his tracks, like a month or two by himself,” he said. “Then came Axl’s vocal parts. I went back to Indiana…”

“Well Axl’s a… perfectionist,” says Duff slowly. “That’s what makes him great. The end product’s great, but it gets maddening to work with that person. There’s no hashing out with them. November Rain in particular, the song was torturing him. He was happy he was finally finished with it. It wasn’t really characteristic of the band.”

a raw use your illusion as one album without all the filler would have been amazing.

i'd love to hear that version someday.

but then there's also this interesting quote from axl:

“We knew we had to bury Appetite in some way,” Rose told Hit Parader, soon after their release. “There was no way to out-do that album, and if we didn’t outdo Appetite in one way or another it was going to take away from our success and the amount of power we had gained to do what we wanted. I’ve never really looked at it as two separate albums. I’ve always looked at it as an entire package. For me it fits together perfectly for the 30 songs in a row. Everything that we decided to record for the album made it.

what's the damn point?

A question for the ages.

i remember during a particularly dark period in '05 or so, a fan had put together a theory that the entire chinese democracy album was actually hidden somewhere on a torrent site.

this fan spent days downloading random files, hoping to someday strike gold.

all we had to do was find it!

#123 Re: Guns N' Roses » Guns N' Roses & related STUDIO SESSIONS - a definitive collection (?) » 375 weeks ago

is there any information out there about an early recording of you could be mine?

i can't even imagine how amazing a version with adler would sound.

i'm sure they had an '86 version, and likely also recorded it a few years later during the mates rehearsals... but that's pure speculation.

what a killer fuckin' performance of shadow of your love!

I'm a bit surprised at the results I'm seeing. The lions share are on Atlas and The General.

I suppose that two sequels, spiritual and literal, to much loved GNR classics would be attractive proposition but then again, these are slower tempo songs.

I'm all in on the Beltrami stuff. I dig his work, love the epic pieces on CD, and think there are a couple rockers in there too.

seven is a really interesting one. it's a shame we'll probably never hear it, especially considered it was a-listed at one point.

beltrami wrote the guitar part and also did the orchestration. he called it his favorite of the bunch.

according the supposed leaked album art, seven was original the 11th song on the album.

So those leaked email songs were legit?

I thought about including Betas Barn as well because Pitman mentioned it but kind of post-lore yet still canon.

msl's silence is deafening. the only explanation is he was paid off to shut his mouth because the info was legit.

beta's barn had to be a rib or an inside joke. no way that was a real tune. then again, this is the band that came up with "silkworms."

the other supposed songs for cd 2:

Atlas Shrugged
Cuban Skies
Goin' Down
Jackie Chan (pka Checkmate)
Light My Fire
Monstrosity
Silk Worms
Soul Monster (pka Leave Me Alone)
The General
Thyme
Tonto

there's also "daddy can the devil do mommy and me?" which was probably just a joke from axl. hell of a title, though.

i wonder the rumored dj & axl song was called...

In latest Sweden Rock magazine, Bach reveals that Axl was to sing on his latest album "Kicking and screaming", but had to cancel it in the last minute. Axl texted Bach and asked "When is the latest possibility to come over and do the vocals". The day came and went but Axl couldnt make it. No hard feelings from Bach though, who also heard a new song that DJ and Axl had written together - it was dark and heavy and very cool - Bach then told the reporter (jokingly?) "If Axls not going to release I want to release it with my band!, its so damn good!"

I really don't think the real working title of the song is Jackie Chan. IMO, that was Axl joking title.

i bet it has some other title, but i do believe it's the song written by old guns that was worked on for the jackie chan soundtrack.

I'd rather have the complete If The World remix instead of 80's leftovers. At least the If The World remix is new Guns N' Roses music. At least it's not from 30 years ago.

same.

i'm just coming to terms with the fact that releasing new music is at the absolute bottom of my favorite band's priority list.

#128 Re: Guns N' Roses » APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION - Super Deluxe | Discussion Thread » 376 weeks ago

went to a brazillian steakhouse the other day and dropped way too much money. went home and immediately canceled my preorder for the super deluxe edition.

one of the better decisions i've made in 2018.

that said, i've really been enjoying this on spotify. the "re-mastered" afd tracks sound great, but they always sounded great. i mean, this wasn't really an album in need of a re-mastering.

standouts so far:

- mama kin sound city '86
- heartbreak hotel sound city '86
- move to the city acoustic
- november rain acoustic (AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN)
- whole lotta rosie live

new work tune was pretty cool. sounds like they were up all night drinking and listening to zeppelin 3 and then went to the studio. the plague is very forgettable.

i'll probably grab the blu ray and vinyl on ebay after the dust settles.

I have a question and/or suggestion to James and the staff.

This band is deader than a doornail but I thought it might make sense to put together a compilation section of all fake leaks.

It would further solidify this site's dominance over GN'R lore, especially as it pertains to the Chinese Democracy era.

i would be down to help with this in any way i can.

the brain remix cd is better gone, blood in the water, this i love remix, shackler's and if the world remixes. any other remixes? was this to be released?

melissa & brain performed a remixed version of sorry at an nba halftime show.

(this sounds like gn'r madlibs)

it'd be fucking killer if there was a studio version of that song with axl or melissa on vocals. i'd take either.

in regards to its release, according to axl, he referred to it as an actual album. i'd think that if he saw it as an album, that he intended to release it at some point. then again, it is axl we're talking about. 14

Axl wrote:

We recorded a lot of things before Chinese was out. We’ve worked more on some of those things and we’ve written a few new things. But basically, we have what I call kind of the second half of Chinese. That’s already recorded. And then we have a remix album made of the songs from Chinese. That’s been done for a while, too. But after Vegas [Guns N’ Roses is performing a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino that runs through June 7], we’re going to start looking very seriously at what we’re doing in that regard.

i'm really interested in this "second half of chinese democracy." i believe axl also once described it as "more aggressive", with "full guitars."

(whatever that means)

the general is supposed to be really dark and about child abuse. it sounds pretty heavy... towards the end, it's definitely building towards something crazy. i'd bet my bottom dollar that there's a great buckethead solo somewhere. i would LOVE to hear the full version.

it's a shame the remixes are pretty uninspired, other than this i love which absolutely rules. i do admit i was wasted one night and listened to ashba's better remix and thought it was pretty great.

from the songs we know exist, it'd be hard to make a full album out of them. so then maybe it was accompanied alongside these half-assed remixes to try and make a full release?

was something like this the guns n' roses self-titled album rumored to be rejected by umg?

1. the general
2. atlas shrugged
3. seven
4. soul monster
5. jackie chan
6. oklahoma
7. ides of march
8. zodiac
9. oh my god
10. silkworms
11. if the world (remix)
12. shackler's revenge (remix)
13. this i love (remix)
14. better gone
15. blood in the water
16. sorry (remix) *

* unconfirmed

if i was the label, not sure i would have reacted differently. seems like axl doubled-down on everything with this album after failing with the first. this thing would would have been even more unsuccessfully commercially. based on what we know and what we've heard, i don't see a single hit on here.

the label was probably already working on the locked n' loaded boxset when axl sent them a copy of the follow up record.
