#1301 Re: Guns N' Roses » Better - Studio Version of 2016 Live Arrangement(fan mix) » 508 weeks ago
TWAT... TWAT needs work. Axl vocally nailed it when they played it, but Slash and the band was all over the place. Slash also dumbed down Bucket's amazing solo, and frankly Robin's guitar work too, into just random shredding.
TWAT is the best track we've heard of the CD-era imo, and Slash just kind of played it like a random, stock, modern rock-radio track and DID NOT give it the respect it deserves.
I didn't think Axl nailed TWAT to be honest. He didn't shame himself either. It was serviceable. But he needs to get the screams in the middle back up to the high pitch for me to give it that acclaim. In fairness to him - it's fucking near impossible to do - then again - he did it in 2009 - so I wouldn't rule it out.
As for Slash's parts. I noticed two things:
1. Slash did the same thing he did to Fink's parts on CD and Better. Which is add complexity to solos that were very simplistic. It works for the most part in the CD songs as frankly fink's solos lack the chops of the rest of the old catalogue and so bringing them up to speed guitar wise makes it sound more like classic GNR. Where I agree with you though is that TWAT may be the exception to the rule. Finks original solo here is so basic that it should be the first solo anyone learns on guitar now - right after smoke on the water. Strangely though that melody really fitted in with the song well - perhaps due to it's similarity to the vocals but who knows what came first there. Anyway it felt a bit odd with it gone. Although I also think if they played it regularly in the set the new part would evolve to fit that space better.
2. In the bucket solo Slash kept the major melodies of bucket but played it in his own rocker and blues-sloppy style. If anything though I think the problem here was too much respect for the original - basically it's slash covering the bucket solo - whereas what this song always screamed for all along was a Slash composed outro - and the bucket solo is the best solo on CD because it's kinda a big outro like Slash used to do. In short now we've had the song for 8 years or whatever he HAD to do it this way. But if anything I think the weakness in it is that the original composition is kinda average for a GNR outro solo when compared to DTJ, NR and others. Slash playing it himself showed that up.
Still I'd love them to add it to the setlist properly.

#1303 Re: Guns N' Roses » Australia in Feb '17 » 508 weeks ago
yeah exactly!!! I've got osteoporosis now so i'm worried if I get knocked around too much I'd break something...but then again....i'm pondering if the VIP pit might be more restrained than the general pit due to the insane price making less people pack in there.
Also tempted by the VIP seat package but it kinda offends me that it's $100 more than the pit and yet behind them....can't tell how far back it really would be on the map too...it's one thing if it's kinda close but I dont wanna be half the field away or more.

I'm going in circles in my mind - to get seats or pit - normally I love pit but I've got some health issues that could make it challenging...but then pit is sooo close.

Is it possible you are both right?
Maybe Buzz knows absolutely everything about hiring for fortune 500 companies, but maybe also the situation at those elite corporations is not indicative of how the market is for smaller 'mom and pop' businesses?

From the China Exchange interview:
Axl Rose wrote:“The heads of the music industry realize that for their business, why deal with a band? All they need is a star and a producer. They don’t even care who writes what or what it sounds like. They could be a genuine fan of music, say, the music company president, owner, whatever. But when it comes to their business, it doesn’t have anything to do with that.
It just has to do with what’s going to be the easiest, what’s going to make the most money, and make the company and the shareholders happy and stuff like that. I can respect that … but as an artist and a musician and working with bands, it doesn’t help me at all, and i don’t think that it helps music. It doesn’t help the bands become self-sufficient and successful, they’ve got to work a lot harder because the labels are more worried about themselves making money.”
Why risk losing money on new music when there is a cash cow ready to have it's tits milked off?
That's what I mean about the expectations of GNR in the modern era.
That's the thing - a label can find a new kid to be a Justin Beiber - have a producer write some songs - all session guys to record everything - all replaceable etc etc. So it's silly for them to invest in a band like the old days where it might take 3 records to make the classic record and where the costs are all so much higher etc.
But that's about breaking new acts. This is a marque brand act in GNR. World famous name. Now with the legitimising Axl and Slash factor to give it credibility to the masses. Plus they already paid for almost 2 albums worth of stuff already done. So what do you need - 2 weeks in a studio for slash and a mix and master. Could polish it off for pocket change for the label and given how CD1 cleared the debts - it's all profit.
Unless what GNR want is a massive commitment from the label that makes it less about free profit for them. Like guaranteed marketing spend of a lot of money or renegotiated artist fees or something that would sour the deal.
But basically considering the album is already 90% done the label has every motivation to release it, if they don't - it must be because GNR is doing something that would alter the profit from their perspective. Why shouldn't Axl i guess...it's his music afterall...but there's a point where he has to let everyone make $ or it's not going to happen.

If you listened closely, he said that the record company is still a barrier to releasing new music.
Why would that be the case though? Why wouldn't any label want to release an album with Axl and Slash?
I wonder the extent to which GNR's demands from the label are unrealistic - like 1990s style marketing budgets not taking account of 20teens style record sales.
#1310 Re: The Garden » Wolf whistling to become a hate crime » 509 weeks ago
Oh yeah. It's for sure harassment and shouldn't really be tolerated. Just from a law point of view I thought passing it as a hate crime seemed odd - to me it's more about harassment and intimidation.
Stuff like the KKK or gay bashing are crimes based on prejudice, whereas here, I feel this stuff is a crime but it's more based on the guy being horny or an asshole or both, rather than hatred.
For example if a jock beats up a nerd then is that a hate crime because he's prejudiced against the group of smart people? I guess it kinda is.
Don't get me wrong, I think it should be illegal, I'm just questioning the label of 'hate crime' compared to just plain old harassment or assault etc.
