Horrendous for Germany, but pretty great for everybody else. England going out in the groups after beating Germany for the first time since 66, a marvelous Holland team, the French that were WC champions 2 years prior, Italy being their scrappy self surviving two penalties in ordinary time then a shootout in the semi against the hosts, before turning on a massive performance in the final. Many entertaining group games, big and entertaining knockouts and a great final. It's one of the best tournies ever in int. football. Probably the only thing missing is like you said, a German team doing well.

Classic games don't come around often to be fair. Any tournament that delivers one of those gets thumbs up in my book. We have already gotten 2 "big matches" in SPA-ITA and GER-ITA, tonight will be the third. With the amount of "big teams" participating (5) you could maximally get 4. That's not bad.

In any case I'll have to wait a few years to make a judgment. 2014 was great when it happened, and many said it was the best World Cup in decades, but looking at it now it wasn't all that. Groups were pretty good, knockouts were dry. The 7-1 is memorable, but not a great game.

00 and 06 are my favorites in this century.

Still think Trump can take this. The polls have been telling us he can't win since he started his campaign. The media has been telling us that. They said he wouldn't even get the nomination.

Well, he did. And Hillary fucking Clinton is still his opponent. All he has to do is convince people he'll be better than her. Even for a mad man that is feasible.

Debates will be decisive imo. No way Hillary will come out looking good from those.

Fuck me that was great. I was expecting him to make an appearance, but this caught me by surprise. Get this guy back in the band. Him and Frank can alternate on new and old songs. Just look at the guy, he was born for this. 50 years old and still like a kid at Christmas.

Bit shit that game was. Wales were the best team until the goal, then they sorta just gave up.

Nice to see Ronaldo get a goal and go level with Platini on EURO goals. Don't particularly like the guy, but he is a great player and I like to see them do well.

It's actually not that common for the favorites to win. Weren't France/Spain doing the back-to-back (World-Euro) tournaments the only real times it's happened in my life-time?

That's why I'm not convinced Germany will win. France haven't really done anything besides hammer Iceland (and normally they would have been expected to do so anyway) and don't have their best striker or defender there for 2 very different reasons.

Wales haven't really done anything other than beat Belgium (and prove the FIFA rankings are a bit silly). Bale is a big game player however.

Ronaldo though I have a feeling will get his goal to equal the record and see this as something he can get over Messi who's international legacy is defeats in finals.

Germany did it too in 72-74.

It's not common for some favorites to win. France and Spain are known historical bottlers in this regard. Italy is hit and miss as well.

Germany and Brazil though usually meet expectations. I'd be very surprised to see a strong Germany lose to a middling France. They only lost to them once, in the third place final way back in 1958. It's possible for them to lose a final though, as 2 of their 3 losses came against "lesser opponents".

I have no dog in this fight. Whoever wins will lose in the final I think.

Wales might give us the best game though, so I'll go with them. Culturally it's a lot closer to home as well.
