Yeah someone can say "there's no new album" but how many major bands can you name who released new material a few months after getting back together?

Motley Crue, Black Sabbith, Ac/Dc, Alice in Chains, Iron Madian, Judas Priest....

It's normal to reunite with a reunion album for the tour.....

Yeah I'm not saying he's a god or better than anyone or anything.

I'm just saying there is an internet mythology that's grown around the ideal that he's some type of uber-asshole - and not only that but WORSE than other rock stars - as lets be honest - rock musican is not exactly a profession devoid of strong personalities. He's probably not a saint, but then neither are the guys in most bands.

The whole Matt is a jerk thing seems founded as far as I can tell in two things:

1. That he was honest and candid about his groupie activities. If we're going to damn him for that we can say goodbye to almost all bands - they almost all did crazy shit - he was just honest enough to answer the question.

2. The VR doco where duff called him negative about the non-famous singers who auditioned for them. Sure he was a little headstrong on the day they filmed that audition - but then the GNR boys making a comback project like VR was a fairly important issue - and realistically I think he turned out to be right that scott was the best choice and that coming out with an unknown singer was much less of a good idea than the superground approach they took.

By comparison - no one is calling Slash and ashole for rejecting the VR album they recorded with Corey Taylor. But Matt is the devil because he didn't like some no-name singers they got out of an add in the paper.

This is the same thing, except the Chinese material which they aren't dropping anytime soon requires it.

There's only a handful of Chinese tracks in the set though. Although I'd like them to stay as I love them.  But most of what Melissa and Pitman do seems to be triggering pre-recorded samples and loops. Don't think it's really anything that couldn't be outsourced to Dizzy most of the time. That said I'm not campaigning for her to be out - but she's a luxury not really needed - so we might as well have some more like extra drummers.

jarmo isn't at every show and there's nothing to indicate he's getting paid £70,000 a year or whatever to attend shows.

Well he used to be at all shows - has it changed? I know they shipped him out to Australia for the past couple of tours where his job seemed to be checking off the meet and greet list, and taking photos of the band on stage.

What does it cost to ship him and all the other hangers on around for this kind of stuff? To run multiple transport options so Axl and his crew of brazillians can be in different rooms from the other people.

I don't have a problem with any of it, I'm just saying a production of this scale carts around tons of equipment and crap and multiple staff on the payroll, a lot of which is probably slightly unnecessary if times were actually tough....but they're not because it's big business!

So it seems odd that suddenly when I suggest bringing Matt for a handful of songs it's financially impossible.

If you mean Katarina Benzova who does those black/white photos for the tours, press releases and the website... she works for several bands like the Stones/Aerosmith/Kiss ect. She's not exactly just a friend.

No I mean Jarmo.

I don't know about this tour but the previous tours he was rewarded for his years of propoganda pushing and anti-slash censorship on HTGTH by being made an offical 'photographer' and traveling the world.

Again I'm fine with it - but if we have to cut costs - it's people like that which we can do without.

I think you're underestimating Sorum's ego.

I also don't see why there'd be any logistical purpose to having 3 different drummers each night playing, unless it was a 1 off "farewell show". It's not like it would boost ticket sales.

It was cool Steven got his moment and will no doubt get more, but I don't see how anyone could really think Frank would be getting fired at this point like they're no doubt thinking on that other forum.

I think you're inflating Sorum's ego - the man works with a ton of charities, and in a lot of session gigs, and in various "all-star" bands that would require being not too much of a dickhead to maintain relations with out famous people like Hollywood Vampires, and Kings of Chaos. He's simply not the devil he is made out to be on these forums.

As for the logistics issue - the band spent 30 years dragging around 3 guitarists when it only needed two, it has two keyboard players (really the second and third when you consider Axl can also play piano quite well), it takes around a massive entourage of support staff including people like Jarmo who were basically friends given odd jobs like 'photographer' - I think we can make some room for the guy who drummed on 50% of the bands Albums.

I personally think they should have Adler play all the AFD tracks, Sorum do all the UYI stuff, and let Frank (or Brain if he wants to return) handle the CD stuff.

It would be the best of all worlds and it's not like they can't afford it!

i'd like to hear Axl do Big Gun at least once

Hell Yes!

I was listening to AC/DC the other night and there's a whole host of Brian songs he'd sound great on. I know he's more into the Bon stuff but I'd kill to hear stuff like "Got You By the Balls"  and "Rock The House" - hell I could list like 20 more lol

I agree he sounds better in Ac/Dc than GNR now though.

I think it's because his mid range is shot for rasp.

It seems he can sing midrange clean, or in his ultra-low voice, or he can do a high pitched rasp. A lot of the Ac/Dc stuff uses high pitched rasp so he can basically scream it out and hide other weaknesses. But GNR songs have more melody in the mid-range where it shows up more IMO.

Axlin16 wrote:

However, no matter to who thinks i'm a dick on this, if Axl fails to release any original material during this final run at that the top, he is a failure imo as a musician.

I understand the sentiment and the frustration but failure is too strong a word for it I think.

I mean you can't really be a failure and also be considered one of the top frontmen of all time, be the go-to guy one of the biggest rock acts in the world used in an emergency, regularly chart on top-singer of all time polls, and have written some of the best selling records of all time.

Lets face it - if Axl had died in 1992 no one would dare use the world failure within a lightyear of him - he'd be a saint and rock god - so why should his legacy be punished because he had the wisdom not to end his life and rather enjoyed a leisurely semi-retirement thereafter?

That said I DO GET THE FRUSTRATION - to me Axl's voice is the greatest thing ever and it borders on CRIMINAL that politics/fights/business/whatever let that art not happen. I mean you just look at Sailing in 2006 and you realise what could have been. Likewise if the reunion GNR doesn't deliver anything for us it's pretty damn wasteful!

Warms the heart to see Steven get his dream back.

#1437 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Set-List » 515 weeks ago

It's about the pacing at the end to me.

Even if I was forced to use exactly the same songs I think this order would be better - small changes but would liven up the end IMO:

1. It's So Easy
2. Mr. Brownstone
3. Chinese Democracy
4. Welcome To The Jungle
5. The Seeker
6. Estranged
7. Live And Let Die
8. Rocket Queen
9. You Could Be Mine
10. Raw Power (with "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory" Intro)
11. This I Love
12. Civil War
13. Coma
14. Godfather Theme
15. Sweet Child O' Mine
16. Better
17. Out Ta Get Me
18. Wish You Were Here (Richard Fortus and Slash)
19. November Rain (with "Layla" Intro)
20. Don't Cry
21. Nightrain
Encore:
22. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
23.  Double Talkin' Jive
24. Paradise City

#1438 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Set-List » 515 weeks ago

Overall the setlists are strong.

Good mix of deep cuts for fans (coma, estranged, DTJ) , iconic mainstream stuff (KOHD, Jungle, SCOM, NR etc) and the bands 'newer' (I know now ancient)  material (CD, Better, TIL etc).

So generally it's a good mix.

The areas I think could use improvement are:

1. Using the same setlist two nights back to back in the same city is a bit poor. There's grounds for it when you've traveled to a new audience. But it wouldn't hurt when on the second night in the same town to bust out one of the alternate cuts like TWAT or something else. Not hard to do as they have spare songs rehearsed and it makes a world of difference to the repeat viewers in the local town.

2. The encore feels weak to me. Obviously it's a solid tradition to end with PC. However the re-opening with a ballad like 'don't cry', moving into an irrelevant cover like 'the seeker' just makes it feel to me like the show never quite re-gains the traction it had before the obligatory encore break. If we want "don't cry" late in the set for sentimental reasons as one of the songs written early in their history - then it would be better to move something faster to follow it. maybe even add a 4th song to the encore so the last couple can be more exciting.

3. "The Seeker" in general feels wasteful. It's not that it's bad. It's just average. There's a host of GNR songs not played, and even in covers there's a host of more interesting songs that would massively benefit from the GNR touch. Think of how KOHD and LALD are basically GNR songs now because of the stamp GNR put on them. To me "the seeker" does not have that feel. It doesn't suck - it's just there's the whole of TSI to play with, along with Sailing, Ac/DC covers, Zep covers slash likes to do, hendrix and god knows what else they could do there, let alone, play some of the other songs they keep in their back pocket like the rarely-unplayed stuff from UYI, CD etc.

#1439 Re: Guns N' Roses » 3/7/16 SOLDIER FIELD, CHICAGO, IL UNITED STATES » 515 weeks ago

Watched the streams. Axl was sounding good.

Setlist was identical.

Overall I feel the current setlist is a good mix, and I agree with the concept that the hits are chosen for local fans not the online peanut gallery but at the same time I feel identical sets in the same city a night apart is a bit poor. It's not a stretch to think that there would be a significant number of repeat attendance on the second night - wouldn't kill them to swap out a couple of tracks.

#1440 Re: Guns N' Roses » 3/7/16 SOLDIER FIELD, CHICAGO, IL UNITED STATES » 515 weeks ago

Probably some alteration to the setlist as they've been changing it up a little on the second nights normally.
