I don't think it's entirely DJ's fault though.
Now I'm the first to say I think his stage presence is a little overblown - I think he was going for "tribute" to slash but it was dangerously close to parody unfortunately.
However, I don't think the lack of DJ material is because DJ can't write good material. It's because for a LONG TIME Axl has been unwilling (or I even suspect afraid) to do new music.
It's all in the timing. I think if DJ had joined the band in 1999 he'd be on CD to the extent that fink is. The problem is that both he and bumble joined after Axl had developed this complex about writing new material. Bumble was lucky that the old versions weren't released yet so he was able to get a solo or two in - DJ on the other hand came after the album was out.
Notice how in the recent Ac/Dc interview when asked if he would record with them, Axl jokes that the interviewer would be "really helping Axl out" if he could write a great album and give it to Axl to give to the band. Sure Axl is pissing around but I think there's a section of truth to it.
Axl found the CD process torturous and aside from the occasional throwaway line "Same Bat Time" (2008) and "We're going to look very seriously at what we're doing with Albums" (2014) - he doesn't seem to be actually pursuing developing new music. If it were just about the record labels they could play new songs live mixed into the set....but nothing happens...silence on this front even in the face of a reunion.....
I think Axl has developed a complex around songwriting. Don't blame DJ.

I think most of you guys are a little harsh on DJ.
I'm sure a few of us play guitar as a hobby....
ever had the chance to play in a covers band, and then to start your own band?
Given he submitted a ton of Riffs to GNR that went into limbo, that's what DJ was facing, basically he played covers for 8 years or whatever it was and then wanted to go back to making his own music....can't blame him...especially given that his own band is Sixx:Am which has a reasonable amount of traction compared to some of the other guys solo careers.

DJ is right and he should be in Sixx:Am and not GNR. However, he kept more in tune playing these tunes than Slash does these days. Tophat boy better be upping his game.
DJ played nearly nothing but Slash's songs and consciously worked for years to mimic slash's stage moves, appearance, charisma and guitar solos and musical style.....so yeah I don't think Slash has to worry about improvising too much lol
As for DJ - he figured out he was never going to be able to do his own music in a GNR context and would only ever be covering Slash and bailed. Can't blame him for that - he wasn't the first and even now he may not be the last.....

But then what of opera singers who have far more vocal power and far more weight?

I agree he'd most likely jump if asked.
But I also think there's not much else he could have said.
If he said that he would love to do it and didn't get the call it would come off as sad and desperate like how people complain about Adler needing to realise the past is over.

Its not like it takes a nerd to search up some clips of the show. Whole goddamn world was like a GNR celebration for about two solid weeks. He wasn't even curious as to how they sounded? I don't buy any excuses. No one is too busy to watch a five minute clip on youtube and you know fans were likely sending him clips on social media.
I dunno, I'm not in a rush to watch porn of my ex-girlfriend sucking off some new guy either.
He's probably a little bitter, he got the job of a life time getting into GNR during the peak of it's success, but then he was fired rather than leaving, he also never found himself invited to return and was also overlooked for VR.
If I was him I wouldn't be keen to rush out and watch videos of Richard going "hey look - it's the dude who replaced me, who seems to be better than me at my instrument, and is picking up checks I'll not get".
Like why should he give a shit to watch - especially if GNR can't get their act together and do something new - he saw slash play the godfather and duff play attitude from a closer vantage point than you or I, no need to watch them replicate it in 2016.
Why cant he take Tracey's approach?
I don't think you can really equate being rhythm guitarist in one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time at the absolute peak of their success with being a back up dancer/singer.
In 1993, If tracey misses the connecting flight to the show, it goes on just with a little less harmony on the choruses. If Gilby missed what would they do? Postpone most likely unless they could teach the skid row guys the songs in an hour or two.

That NBA thing almost came off as anxiety and a chemical peel to me. Like aside from how he looked the odd thing was how he acted, like he'd forgotten who he was.
Without getting into the diagnosis game, I think whatever quirks axl has I don't think extended periods of isolation were good for them.
He always seems to be at his best when he can deal with the pubic, like late 80s axl, like 2006 and like now.

Yeah...my thing is I prefer the Brian era generally to the bon era - sure Bon has some great songs too - not taking anything away from him - but Back in Black and Thunderstruck...etc.....it's not like Brian never achieved anything with the band...most of my favourite Ac/Dc songs are his.
I'd like to see some type of hybrid going forward. Brian can still sing in the studio, but Axl sure is nailing it live. I wish they could move forward with Axl but still kinda include brian but letting him do studio stuff and or occasionally do a song live if his hearing is protected or something.

Axl's recent performances both in Ac/Dc and GNR remind me of this clip
Recent gigs have high rasp levels and clear power. No apparent struggles.
Like, seriously, what the fuck you could have been singing like that the whole time?.
Here's what had assumed was the situation previously:
1980s: Natural Power in Axl's Voice
1993 : UYI tour does permanent damage
2001-2: Axl seems to have wobbly voice in a few registers. Perhaps this is his new 'natural voice' post damage. Very limited rasp.
2006: Axl has learned to control his new voice and adds in more old school rasp. However he still struggles to sing cleanly around certain midrange notes. Hides this with incredible high pitched power raspy screams.
2009: Adding even more screaming and yelling. yet seems weaker on the softer songs especially in lower voice.
2010: Still using a bit of rasp but less of the 2006-2009 high screams - shorter bursts.
2011-2014: Rasp is slowly removed and screams become less high pitched and shorter in duration. Most stuff sung in a high clean voice.
So basically I'd figured all these changes were compensating for some type of damage or issue done early on. I loved the rasp and screams in 2006 and 2009 - but I'd started to think the glory days of this stuff were gone - as performances from 2014 really made it seem like he just couldn't conjure that level of power anymore - and who could blame him - surely that's a young mans game....
But here we are in 2016 and he's pulling out screams and rasp with Ac/Dc and GNR. The GNR ones are almost as insane in high notes as the 2009 high pitched stuff and I would say generally stronger overall than he's been since 2006 if not the 1990s, then, this Ac/Dc stuff - watching a gig from 2012 you wouldn't think Axl could nail brian johnston the way he has. Many people felt that classic Axl would have been good casting for Ac/Dc but that modern Axl would be forced to mickey and ruin the songs. Boy was that wrong.
So I can't help but wonder. It's awesome that Axl is doing this now. But WTF happened in the past? Why did we have to listen to such mickeyised versions of the songs and pay hundreds for it for 5+ years....odd.....did Axl have a vocal problem in the past that he has finally got on top of....or did he just not give a shit at the time?

TheSundanceKid wrote:I hear a lot of crying from AC / DC fans. But, you know Bon Scott died and people never said well Brian Johnson's AC / DC ain't real man.
Only because they didn't have Twitter in 1980.
Actually I hear that kind of thing a lot in Australia.
I'm a huge fan of Brian Johnston and it drives me nuts because basically you can not say anything to shower praise on him without someone always interjecting that it's not the same since Bon.
Obviously there's the real fans who grew up listening to Bon and loved him, but I also wonder if it's become a bit hipster to have the opinion that Bon is best. Seems like it's said a lot so that people who don't really listen to rock music at all can appear knowledgable about Ac/Dc when the topic comes up.
Anyway Axl has really delivered on this, to me he was pretty much the only person in the world who had a shot at replicating Brian. There's so much of Brian's character and mood in the songs even when he's not always involved in the songwriting. But Axl has brought his A level game and is really delivering. So although I'll always love Brian i'm also going to just enjoy this for what it is - as it's pretty damn cool in it's own right.
