I saw Soundgarden nail far beyond the wheel a few years ago. If Chris can pull of that vocal... maybe... just maybe....
Having seen Chris live a few times though I refuse to believe he's ever really lost his voice though. It's a bit less strong than prime perhaps - but it doesn't have any major problems does it?
There's no Chris Cornel Disaster show is there - unlike Axl's 2012 incident

He can turn it into an advantage.
Stationary Axl can mean more power in vocals.

It also buys them a pass not to have to run around like it's 1991 (whereas if he could and just didn't reviewers might start up) and if he nails these shows it will be be a positive story in the press that he soldiered on with a break.
Still...can't help but think Smoking Guns did some type of voodoo here to punish Axl for the secret show

From the context of talking about the secret show I'd assume "the new stuff" was the Chinese Democracy songs.
Afterall it's only been 15 years since we first heard the title track
