I'm just torn there. TWAT is perfect the way it is and Slash's work would be different... and I'm just not confident that it would be something that would fit him RIGHT NOW in his career and his style.

I know he didnt' like Estranged and its been said Axl actually had to pay him to play on it, and he went on to create my favorite GN'R song with that guitar work... 91-93 Slash, I would give him the benefit of the doubt, but I just can't do that now considering his current style; not saying its bad, or that a Slash TWAT solo would be bad, I just can't say it would be an upgrade or a fit.

Don't get me wrong - I love the song the way it is...even Robin's part.  I don't want to change it, but to say Slash couldn't play something as epic is just silly since he's done it.  You can argue if he wanted to do it or whatever, but he did it and it was a monster.  Messages proved he can still deliver that type of work when it's there for him to work on, so it's not like he hasn't done it since either.

I thought that was recent at first (just skimmed the article) and the first thing that came to mind was there's no way he went anywhere by himself.  Interesting read.

Slash absolutely could have been killer on TWaT.  I see TWaT as being very similar to Estranged in structure (especially with Robin's playing over the verses) until the end where it takes on more of a NR structure.  No way Slash couldn't have killed that in his own way.  It certainly would have been different, but still killer.

If GnR can continue without Slash, I assure you STP could continue without any of those guys and probably at the same relative % that the new band does compared to old GnR.  I like STP, but lets not go too crazy.

No, I don't mind the speculation...I was just asking.  I can't say I've followed his career with much interest.

When was the last time he was actually involved with NIN?  It's not like he's been part of them either for some time now.

I thought it was pretty good.  Not mindblowing, but pretty good.  Had a few moments of the choppiness I enjoy that Slash used to play with too.  Still, he's playing over someone else's song...hardly a testimony to his songwriting skills (unless it turns out he wrote it).  If that's what Matt and Axl heard the first time, I can see where they would have seen a fit.

I didn't even think about that to be honest, plus this has been an entertaining thread.

I thought that there was a proper credits to the songwriting on Chinese Democracy on the ASCAP website, where Robin where Robin has a helluva a lot song writing credit.

I much prefer Robin's feeling, crab walk and artistic integrity versus a show boating, douche looking DJ Ashba. Sorry but the guy is a joke.

If Robin was such a shitty guitarist why would Axl Rose and Trent Reznor want him?

Wasn't he recommended by Matt Sorum to Axl?

Well, he is a shitty rock guitarist, so I can't rally answer your question in regards to Axl.  I can kind of see NIN, but he's every bit the hack I would have been trying to replace Slash in GnR and I don't pretend to be a professional guitar player.  To date, he's written one more song that has been released than I have, but I've never made a living as a musician (though I guess I was technically a professional musician for one summer when I was a paid percussionist for the city band).

I don't blame the guy...I'd have done the same thing if I were him.  Take the money and run.  You don't have to actually be good at something to be hired to do it; you just have to convince the hiring person you are the person for the job.
