#181 Re: Guns N' Roses » What happened to Axl's voice? » 87 weeks ago
From his reappearance in house of blues and rock in rio onwards he appeared with that vocal timbre, sharp, angry, powerful and with a lot of control, but it was different, what really happened?
80s/90s rasp ruined his voice. Just listen to this SCOM intro:
In 1986 his voice is much more delicate, a unique swirl in his throat.
Now take 1991 in comparison:

In 1999 Axl hadn't sung for years. Probably to try and heal the damage. 00s comes around he is no longer using the rasp like he used to. He said in an interview this was a conscious choice.
Already in 1988 his voice was damaged to the point he could no longer fully replicate his AFD sound. The You're Crazy version from the Late Show in 88 is the last time we hear the classic Axl voice. In 1991 he's struggling to sing, has to cancel shows. In 1992 he has regained control and he sounds better, but with much less texture to his rasp. Again in 1993 his voice is starting to thin out, and he pretty much only sings on Sympathy and the Springsteen Come Together until laying down vocals for Live Era and CD in 99. His vocals here are good, but live he doesn't use the rasp almost at all.
Likely AC/DC shattered much of what was left.

Slash said in 2019 that the redone CD stuff was enough to fill a record. That means at least 8 songs, maybe 10. We have gotten 5 now.
Atlas
Seven
Oklahoma
State of Grace
Quick Song
All of them could be in play.

I don't get the fixation with Israel. What's the relevance? Not like they've ever done anything for us.

I kinda like Scraped. The intro voice is pretty meh, but the rest is better than most on CD. He's being raspy and that's far and between on that album. But my favorite part of Scraped is the solo.
Maybe 2006 Rock Am Ring Jungle scream gives Rio 2001 a run for it's money. I believe 2006 is one of the best he's ever done.
Yeah it's up there. In the early 00s Axl started using much less rasp to preserve his voice. The upside was that his technique had gotten better and he could deploy immense amounts of power. 2006 for me is too controlled. In 2001 and at the VMA's he is in full animal mode, with the unfortunate result of blowing out his voice, so he stopped doing that. But my god those were epic screams.

Axl sounds way out of tune and his voice is super weak
It sounds like his voice from the MTV VMAS which was awfulWe must have different ears.
You dont think the "my only regret......" part sounds like this
The VMA catastrophe is the last thing I'm thinking about when hearing this. The voice is similar, but here it actually sounds good. In Jungle it doesn't.
Not only do I like the voice, but of course the melody. Axl was pretty weak on the CD we got imo. Not here.

polluxlm wrote:The leak and live sound exactly the same so it is Slash. But it also sounds like he's playing a BH solo. It would be very interesting to hear the original takes.
I think for me this is Axl's best vocal take in the CD era. Only other thing that comes close is the scream in TWAT.
You think the general is Axls best vocal take on the CD era stuff? i think its one of his worst right up there with scrapped.
Oh My God is also good but only in the verses. This has a great chorus.
Stuff like This I Love is too Michael Bolton for me.

I know it’s too little too late, but I was listening to The General loudly in my car today and it did sound like Slash to me. At least it sounded like it could be him. I still believe the versions that leaked are basically what is going to be released, just mixed better.
Regardless, good sign playing it live. And it did sound pretty close to what we’ve heard. Will “Monsters” be next? Maybe save Atlas, etc. for the next round of dates?
It sounds like Slash is playing a Finck riff and a Buckethead solo. That's why it's confusing I think. Slash usually doesn't play like this to my ears. The sound is there, but not the style. Hard Skool and Absurd are a lot more Slash than this.
