You have to keep in mind the Black Ice tour was the holy grail for most Ac/Dc fans.

The band returned after something like an 8-10 year absence.

They had reformed the original line up (other than bon being dead - but many fans grew up with brian anyway as the international fame came with him).

Then they released a new album that kicked ass and did a full on world tour of sell out stadiums.

It would be like if GNR reunited the AFD line up, dropped an awesome album and did a 3 year global sell out tour.

Many considered it the final retirement run, and the atmosphere was of a crowning achievement.

Then 5 years later they came back. But Malcom was gone - and the drummer is in jail. So many hardcores were a bit skeptical - in GNR terms this is like 5 years after the reunion / new-afd album and kickass tour to decide to reunite suddenly - but this time with no Izzy and no Steven. People were skeptical....but then midway through the tour......Brian is out....so that's like being through a new UYI era and suddenly Axl is forced to retire....and it's just Slash/Duff looking for guest singers.

That's where we're at in Ac/Dc land.

If they hate Axl....I have a great idea for their fans.....shut the wholke damn thing down and the fans can just listen to the albums instead of going to any shows Axl may potentially show up at.

Not sure if you're kidding but at the Ac/Dc sites I lurk at that's actually the preferred option. Even the die hards are like "well, we've had a good run lads". Many people were skeptical when malcom retired but embraced this current album, but now the loss of brian just feels like the end to most.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Axl kick ass at it, I'm just saying I think most Ac/Dc fans would rather the band gracefully retire at this point.

The guy's on the verge of kicking the world's ass again and now we've got AC/DC nuts complaining. Besides, don't they know GNR fans have complained for 20 years? They need to step to the back of the line....

That could be what's behind this - all the praise Axl got for reuniting doesn't fit with his normal role - he needs a hostile audience again!

Ok I've had another go.

Let's look at the setlist from 2012 at "The Joint".

Chinese Democracy
Welcome to the Jungle
It's So Easy
Mr. Brownstone
Estranged
Rocket Queen
Better
Richard Fortus Guitar Solo
Live and Let Die
This I Love
Motivation
Dizzy Reed Piano Solo
Catcher in the Rye
Street of Dreams
14 Years
You Could Be Mine
DJ Ashba Guitar Solo
Sweet Child O' Mine
Another Brick in the Wall Part 2
November Rain
Glad to Be Here
Don't Cry
The Seeker
Civil War
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Nightrain
Don't Let It Bring You Down
Used to Love Her
Dead Flowers
Patience
Paradise City

This is my version of how you could keep enough hits yet mix it up:

Chinese Democracy
Welcome to the Jungle
ANY SONG
Mr. Brownstone
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
Richard Fortus Guitar Solo
Live and Let Die
ANY SONG
ANY NON-AXL SONG
Dizzy Reed Piano Solo
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
You Could Be Mine
Slash Solo
Sweet Child O' Mine
November Rain
ANY NON-AXL SONG / Blues Jam
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Nightrain
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
ANY SONG
Paradise City

That's using one of their own setlists. It keeps the essentials but there's actually a lot of room for back catalogue / new stuff / modified covers.

The problem is what do they "NOT" perform?

So many hits makes it tough for them to mix up the setlist too much

I see what you mean...but then I also think some of the set pieces have been awesome but could be retired unless they need to fill out for time. For example "Live and Let Die" and "Knocking on Heaven's Door" are crowd favourites for sure but not entirely essential to believe you actually saw GNR live. Not if they were replaced with something else special like a re-done twat or anastasia.

I think the only songs they really need to play are:

Welcome to the Jungle
November Rain
You Could Be Mine
Paradise City

Personally i'd always want "Nightrain" in too I guess. But I think there's more flexibility than we account for. Songs like "Rocket Queen" and "It's so Easy" are fucking awesome but like we only feel they need to be there because we're accustomed to nearly the whole of AFD being played every time.

I'm curious to see if the continue with the 2.5-3hr sets or if they make the shows shorter

I think Axl needs that time off stage - so I assume they will do 3-4 solos still - or possibly a very very long slash solo/jam break.

Slash and Duff coming back is admitting that Axl was right, and that makes him happy. I'm pretty sure they know you don't screw around with Axl anymore. Imo they are back in the band because they want it, and it is completely on Axl's terms.

I think for each "side" it is both a win and a loss.

Axl has been proven right in the sense that they eventually came back and he was able to keep some version of GNR running the past 20 years without them. He eventually got his Chinese Democracy album out and into the setlist etc. He made his point - they buckled. Slash and Duff found modest success outside of GNR but they've learned the hard way they can't achieve GNR success they had without Axl.

Slash and Duff have been proven right. Axl's new vision for GNR was never properly realised. Even now the band is known for the classic rock songs and Slash's guitar sound and the decision to alter the style of the band roundly failed. We've had 20+ years and a dozen players/producers in the band and all they could get out was one album - which was largely ignored. When Slash and Duff were last both in the band GNR was the biggest act in the world - it should be playing venues akin to U2 and Bon Jovi these days - but on Axl's watch the band struggled to fill arenas last international tour. They were on the road to being a theatre band. It's unlikely a label would release another new-gnr album. They've hit the end of the road.

So Slash and Duff caved by going back and playing CD songs. Axl caved by breaking his vow to die before having them back.

Basically everyone lost and everyone lost face.

But of course the real winners and fans and common sense. maybe the fuckers will go back to making some music?

In fairness to Axl I don't think the reaction to anyone but Brian will be positive.

That band has been about Angus and Brian for the past 36 years.

The previous changes were tolerable. Brain himself joined when Bon died - so there's nothing to be done there. Then although most say the band was really Malcom's band, when he was hospitalised they went with a family member (his nephew) to replace him. Phil has been under house-arrest but was replaced with a drummer they had used during a previous absence and who played on Thunderstruck etc. So in terms of what you got live - it had become the Angus and Brian show - and in terms of legitimacy I'd say was along the lines of the Black Ice tour was the original AFD line up and Play Ball tour has been more like a UYI line up.

But dropping Brian is unthinkable. Axl will really have his work cut out for him.

I think GNR has a way of making things not cheesy. Like you could say if Anastasia has cheesy Bach Riffs and cliche lyrics then Double Talking Jive has cliche Spanish guitar and "Get the money motherfucker" isn't exactly high art lyrically - but they pull it off. I feel it would be the same.

As for it being a powerplay to play each others stuff, I see it more as common sense. Now we're over the cold war - there's no longer a reason to keep sides and shun each others works - and both of them have some of their best stuff outside of old GNR in my mind.

Also it would help freshen up the setlist. Both Axl and Slash have flogged the hell out of the back cataloge in their solo stuff past few years.

I don't need to hear Axl sing VR or Snakepit. I have the same feelings with Cornell and Audioslave....leave that shit in the past or do it solo.

My thing is more that I would have liked those songs to be developed by Axl.

Like Axl singing "Be the Ball" doesn't interest me as much as what Axl would have done with those Riffs.

As we all know slash's version is that Axl rejected them all, and Axl's version is that Slash told him no modifications allowed. I suspect something in the middle is about how it happened - Slash would have been keen to tour and so not into the idea of Axl tinkering with them for 2 years, while Axl hasn't be a fan of getting finished guitar tracks given to him and was interested in other sounds at the time. So there's probably truth behind both interpretations.

Shame though - I think the 5'Oclock instrumentals if worked on by Axl would have been a very solid return to AFD style rock for the band.

That said...I kinda wanna hear Axl do "Dime Store Rock" - as slash always went nuts on it....I dunno why in his solo catalogue he ignores everything but Beggars...that's one of the least exciting songs on that album to me.

My dream is the "tit for tat" encore where Slash does TWAT and Axl does Anastasia.

But as Gorilla Monsoon often said....

HIGHLY UNLIKELY

One issue would be the Ac/Dc machine runs like clockwork. Shows start dead on time and go for 2+ hours  with no breaks or solos other than one extended guitar solo for Angus.

I'm not sure how they'd accomodate Axl's privacy tent and his oxygen requirements.

That said, if he has his rasp back I think he'd nail it. 2006 Axl would be perfect for the job - so maybe he could pull it off.

I could see it working better both for Axl and with Fans if it was an all-star line up. Like Axl does 3 or 4 songs and some other famous people do 3-4 each. Then it's more of a tribute to the band rather than "hey guys we kicked brian out for Axl"
