We saw Brienne kill Stark soldiers in season 3 because they had hung and murdered the owner of an inn. Maybe because I served for 9 years, but most Soldiers aren't merciless killers that want to harm anyone they can for sadistic reasons. I think that was the point of the scene. To remind Arya that not everyone on the other side is a "bad" person. This entire story is about showing the shades of grey of humanity and redemption. The Hound butchered a boy in season 1. He also saved Sansa from being raped and protected Arya for 2 seasons. He's certainly made a change again after his time with the Septon.
Jamie pushed Bran out of a window in the first episode. And while the show hasn't followed his arc exactly as it is in the books, I think it's safe to say that Jamie's POV and actions are certainly more understandable and relatable at this point. How many of you would call Jamie an evil/bad guy? It's kind of been forgotten, but he was called "Kingslayer" for 17 years. In the earlier seasons Jamie feels his honor is unredeemable. Ned Stark mocks his honor. But then we find out that Aerys was going to murder everyone in King's Landing (in the books Aerys ordered him to bring him Tywin's head too) and Jamie murdered him to save tens of thousands of lives. Yea, he broke his vow to protect the king, but we can agree the situation surround his act was definitely not black and white. The other king's guard followed their vows as they beat Sansa repeatedly. Were they good men for following Joffrey's orders?
Brienne is portrayed as this beacon of female empowerment and honor. But she followed and swore her sword to Renly, the 3rd brother. Renly had no claim to the throne. Anyone who believed in his claim were ignoring the line of succession that clearly puts Stannis as the rightful ruler - the same guy the always honorable Ned Stark backed. She even murders Stannis for killing Renly, while as we saw last episode with Jon and Sansa, the punishment for treason is death. Renly objectively committed treason against Stannis. So who is Brienne to pass judgement on Stannis for what he did to Renly?
All of that is a long way of saying there are shades of grey to every character in the show (save Euron and Ramsay) and to remind Arya that just as her father's men followed their lord, the Lannister men are compelled through honor, law and tradition to follow house Lannister. That doesn't mean they're evil people or bad simply because they're fulfilling their oaths. Arya definitely took notice of that. This scene is probably one of the few in the entire episode I didn't take issue with, because it was so believable compared to other ideas that are outright absurd when you take a second look (see Euron sailing past Dragonstone twice without doing anything for the best example).

Although I've felt the past season or so they've dragged their feet to play it out longer. Like I felt the whole plot development from this week could be told in about 5 mins or something absurd if you recount it to someone else.
The show is still great, but I think the pacing these days is a bit slow if you compare it to an Episode from season 1 or 2 where it seemed things happen more often.
I think they've struggled without Martins source material. They clearly have dots they want to join but without the books to help flesh it out it has, at times, felt like the past couple of seasons has been ponderously moving characters around the map until they get to where they need to be for the season climax.
I'm hoping now we near the end everyone will have a bit more purpose.
Still enjoyed the episode, typical scene setting but it was good all the same.
I'm curious how Arya was able to just approach a group of Lannister soldiers and eat with them when in previous seasons the impression was Lannister soldiers killed pretty much anyone who approached them.
Arya's plot armor. She can single handedly murder two men and bake them into pies without drawing attention. She can be stabbed in the stomach 4 times, swim through raw sewage, then run and fight at full speed without being hindered. She could rule the twins for weeks without fucking up and was able to murder all male Freys.
After all that, the Soldiers not being pricks is what grabs your attention?

He should retire to spend time with his family and recovering. The man is THE American hero. I can't think of anyone who has sacrificed more and dedicated his life to this country. Hopefully this tumor is treatable, but can an 80 year old survive chemo? My best friend was 31 when he underwent chemo and was in amazing shape. It took everything from him. I can't imagine what'd it do to McCain.

If you guys all moved on, drop it. Otherwise this is going to turn into the politics thread and you'll be at each other's throats.

And Trump isn't exactly making it easy to get bipartisan help. Neither has Ryan, tbh.
Right, which is why I hope McConnell can start the process. Trump doesn't give a shit. All he wants is a win under his belt. Ryan's in a much tougher boat because he has the freedom caucus. Nothing short of complete repeal is going to satisfy them. But there are moderates on both sides. You're never going to appease Paul or Warren. Hell, even if you passed single payer today or removed all federal regulation over healthcare, they'd both be on TV tomorrow bitching.
I knew the DNC's hopes of getting the Senate in 2016 were unrealistic. Clinton knew this, so she had to have had a plan to work with the GOP moderates and the moderates in her own party. Someone has to step up and be a leader. The idiots can rant about purity and wanting the other side to fail because they treat politics like a NFL game. But after 6 years of near constant bickering, this needs to end. Pointing fingers and trying to assign blame is futile. Both sides are equally guilty in all of this, and trying to point blame does nothing to move us forward. It's unlikely the DNC gets the house in 2018, but I'm not saying it can't happen. I'm just tired of all the bickering and want leaders that actually collaborate and build compromise rather than claim some arbitrary moral reasoning that no sane person can legislate. Take immigration. An open border where people can come and go as they please with no penalties isn't realistic. But neither is the idea of rounding up 12 million people at gun point and sending them home. There's a huge room for compromise that plugs the open border while offering an opportunity for people to assimilate and join America. But purists on both sides ignore reality and pretend that paying lipservice to the extreme is meaningful in any way.
Expand medicaid. Limit prescription prices. Create a tax benefit to people who have private insurance. Open private insurance across state lines and force them to compete. That's a compromise. But too many people are more interested in fighting and cheerleading their team rather than finding a solution.

McConnell has been a complete embarrassment managing the Senate. If he had balls, he could have broken ranks and tried to broker a deal with Schumer and work to find the moderates. Let Warren and Paul bluster. I hope he offers an olive branch to Schumer. I want someone to lead.
If Congress doesn't start working together, we're fucked. Everybody needs to give up some territory. Trump sure as shit isn't going to unite anyone. He's as toxic as ever.
Trump could turn face and offer to work with the Dems as a "fuck you" to the GOP. Though I don't think they'd accept it. If he was the deal maker he thought he was, he'd have Pelosi, Ryan, Schumer and McConnell in his office brokering a deal. But we're back to bickering and blaming the other side.

Pretty good episode, wish they'd cut the filler even more since they're only doing 7 episodes. 3 minutes of Sam emptying chamber pots, barfing, and serving food was a waste of screen time in my opinion. The previews showed Nymeria, so I'm guessing after the talk of family with the Lannister Soldiers and finding Nymeria, that will change her course from King's Landing to Winterfell. Does she even know Jon and Sansa are there?
Really liked the scene with the Hound. It showed how much his character has changed and evolved. Kudos to the actor. Contrasted with Sansa questioning her "king" (you should be more like Joffrey and punish innocents who had no part in the act! [And what families helped out that should get the Umber and Karstark lands? The only family that helped outside of the wildlings were the Mormonts with their 62 men. I thought the North Remembers, but apparently shit that happened last season is too long ago] Yes, I expect everyone to forget that I'm the one who told Cersei Ned planned to send me and Arya back to Winterfell which allowed her to murder my father!), telling him he's both a good ruler and stupid at the same time (Why don't you ask me for advice. It's not like you did last season and I responded "i don't know" and hid an army of 5k men from your brother that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of wildlings who owed me nothing).
Cersei is still clueless. Euron's fleet is worthless when Dany has 3 dragons that can perform air raids and Dany has 50k Dothraki plus 8k Unsullied and whatever houses quickly join her side (I don't know how many soldiers the Martell's and Tyrell's have). It's almost as if they forgot Aegon the Conquerer took westeros with a lot less troops than Dany has now because dragons are like nukes. Her best best is to beg for peace and hope she can return to Castelry Rock. We know Cersei is a royal cunt, but I'm sure Dany can relate to a woman who was relegated to expensive chattle her entire life because she was a woman and whose family saw her as an expensive pawn to be given away. The ironborne have raped and pillaged hundreds if not thousands of families. The Martell's murdered their own kin for no other reason than a desire to rule. If Dany can ally with them, she can hardly find Cersei a bridge too far. I don't know what "gift" Euron has for her. Jorah called Tyrion a "gift" in season 5, but I don't see how Euron can storm Dragonstone and capture Tyrion with 8k unsullied guards and 3 dragons that would roast his fleet before he even made it to shore. So I'm guessing the "gift" is going to be the Sandsnakes, since they killed Myrcella.
Really excited to see Bran explain what is going on to everyone and how he's going to explain his newfound abilities.
Questions I have:
1.) Did Arya free her uncle? In the last episode of season 6, Walder tells Jamie he put Edmure back in the dungeons after re-taking Riverrun. With the Freys dead, Edmure can reclaim the riverlands and ally himself to Jon/Sansa and Dany.
2.) Where the fuck is Ghost?
3.) Stannis told Sam in season 5 Dragonstone has dragon glass everywhere. Why was it such a big deal when he saw it in a book?
4.) Where is Robin Arryn? The Vale lords seem allied to Jon now, but that's kind of fucked to ignore their oaths to House Arryn and their own castles. I hope this is explained.

Cause if so, I'm taking you up on that bet. Not only that, but I'd be willing to gather that one of them would walk into the bar with the 20 or 30 of us, and without even knowing who we all are those two would immediately battle it out. I'd have a beer with him. I think he's completely off the reservation when it comes to politics (i'm sure he feels the same), but that doesn't mean I'd hurt him or wish harm on him because we disagree over the internet. I'd have taken you up on your offer to grab a beer in Philly, but with the concert and having to rush down to DC the next day, I didn't have time.
I met a bunch of forum dudes at Mustang Harry's during the Hammerstein shows. Good group of cats.
