Last picture taken of the two of them. Also one of the few real pictures taken of the band.
Maybe I'm just seeing things, but given how things went you can read a lot from this no?

Not a song but Badalamenti's score at the end of Mulholland Dr. is one of the most bittersweet pieces of music ever.

Been Away Too Long
A grower. Good opener, one of the better songs on the album.
Non State Actor
Bit of a no note. Doesn't grab you very much, eering on the side of filler.
By Crooked Steps
The demo has a better intro, but the album cut is actually a lot better because of a little thing they do at 2.48. I think they could have a done little bit more on that part though. Not as good as the opener, but a good song.
A Thousand Days Before
First "ballad". Cornell is good here. On the level of BCS, maybe a little better.
Blood On The Valley Floor
Taking a little dip here. Feels a bit flat, tired perhaps. Skip candidate.
Bones Of Birds
Another mellow piece. Again I'm left with the feeling this kinda material suits Cornell better. Probably the albums second best song at this point. The demo is a more stripped down version, also worth a listen.
Taree
I immediately like the melody here. Groovy and what should I say, teasy? There are some flaws with the chorus and solo but still a quality effort.
Attrition
Does little for me. Monkey's comments fit very well here.
Black Saturday
Alright, but leaves you wanting. First minute or so is pretty solid. Demo is a lot better.
Halfway There
Getting a little late, late Aerosmith vibes here. Tame and popish.
Worse Dreams
The most glaring example of the effects of crack smoking in post production. The final cut is decent but the demo is the best song on the album. The somewhat tedious intro is gone and the guitar is much loader and rawer. Massive song, the demo that is. Album version feels like a neutered dog in comparison.
Eyelid's Mouth
Below par. Filler if you like.
Rowing
Cornell doing his best Dead Man impression. It's good but gets repetitive for 2 and a half minutes, after which the song really starts. Think this is the first and only proper guitar solo. It's very good though. Flawed song, and for this record that's a kind of fitting climax.
Out of 13 songs 5 are badish. 7 if you discount the demo version of Worse Dreams and Black Saturday. Though if you count them I'd say there are at least 7 good to very good songs on King Animal. About as much as you can expect from a thing like this.
Best song: Worse Dreams (demo)

You guys gotta check out the version with the demos if you haven't. Think I like the cuts there better than the album versions. Especially Worse Dreams sounds a lot better with the rougher guitar.

Yeah, but it's not a list about single runs. You brought that in, I'm saying I don't buy it.

Let me ask you this Ali - what time of day or night do you think Axl is most likely to be awake?
It's a known fact that he's mostly nocturnal.
If you are desperate to have a real one-on-one heart to heart with him it's a lot more likely to happen at 5.30am than 5.30pm and we both know it.
I was trying to think of a reason for Slash to be sober at 5.30. That might actually be it.
You gotta remember another thing that plays into this. Previous to this Axl made some comments at a party that he still had love for Slash or something that made the press. Probably the only time he's said anything positive about the guy since 94.
Did that prompt Slash to do the visit? Then when he didn't get the response he wanted he did the lawsuit (a game that's been going on for a while according to Ax man)?

It’s been four years since your last release, Chinese Democracy. Are you working on something new now? When can fans expect your next release?
Yes, in the future! Ha!

With the population rise your margins drop considerably and could very well be countered by the factors beside home video.
You don't have downloading but you have the internet. You have mtv and a significantly more professionalized publishing media. You have Cameron, DeCaprio and Dion - all big stars at the time. You have the biggest budget ever and a huge buzz about the special effects, long before release time. And you have a well known story that will get people interested from the get go. Cameron is perhaps the biggest director in the world when all of this is going on. A lot of people have fond and recent memories from True Lies, The Terminator and The Abyss. All automatic seat fillers.
And while home video definitely has had some effect you can't just take the whole cake and call it the difference. These things were around when Star Wars had rereleases too, still people went to see them at the theater. And why shouldn't they count anyway? There's a reason they happen, demand. Clearly Titanic doesn't have it.
Maybe you could call it the most impressive original run, but not complete run. Remember, SW came out of almost nothing. It was low budget, word of mouth with a "nothing" cast.

Huh?
Jack White, fun., Mumford & Sons, Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, etc? Those artists are Beiberish to you?
Maybe not the best description. It's just that apart from White I don't know any of those artists.
