I've been following the soap opera that this thread is and honestly stripping away the insults, everybody makes some good points (even Ali).

Having said that, Axl + Slash = Coma and Estranged.  I don't think you can really say Axl + Izzy is better than Axl + Slash because despite the small sample size, the results are stellar.

Carry on; I'll be lurking.  Nice to see that while I was an active participant, I wasn't the cause of all the drama.  tongue

I'll agree it's close. On the one hand you have YCBM, DC, Nightrain, Patience, You're Crazy and on the other Coma, Locomotive, Jungle and DDM.

Despite Slash' awesome contributions I'd consider Estranged and NR 90% Axl songs. A solo is not that hard to make when there's already structure and melody.

That being said, Slash efforts appear to drop drastically once Izzy left the band. Perhaps there was some sort of ego contest going on (for Slash, don't think Izzy cares) that made him go the extra mile. Either way I've always felt Izzy was an integral part of the band. Not just in writing, but also as some sort of psychological factor, respected by Axl and feared by Slash.

From what we hear the late UYI lineup trying to make a record was a disaster.

Yeah...I mean I prefer the AFD line up to the UYI tour...but at the end of the day Matt and the UYI guys were still GNR to me as well.

Still a good band, but far from the same band. Fun in a circus way. Still a far cry from the AFD/Lies band.

I love Izzy but I think people overplay his role in these songs. There's that interview with him where he was talking about writing with GNR - and he says he'd be playing some chords and then Slash comes in and starts chugging out the same riffs but rocky and heavier and adding an intertwining part, then Axl shows up and goes "no change, this melody, let's do this here" and then by the end of the process they've added a ton of bad ass stuff and it's way cool but not like the song he showed up with.

Izzy is great, I'm just saying if AFD had been a juju hounds record then those songs would not sound like the AFD songs. So whoever wrote the original structure, Axl added the vocal melody and the Axlness, Slash brings his way of playing riffs and those solos....so I think people get obsessed with the idea of "without Izzy they can't write". Yes that's what happened when he left - but that's because of the communication breakdown IMO - I think Snakepit, VR, and Chinese all show that the others are capiable of writing great stuff - if they could bring themselves to work together again - with or without izzy it could be impressive.

Vanilla Izzy is pretty stale, I agree. JuJu Hounds is the only album of him I own, and I never listen to it.

Nevertheless, behind Axl he is the main songwriter on all the old albums. The difference between UYI and Snakepit is really him, and it's huge. Sure, the unique Slash style is there but a bunch of substance had been lost. Some guys are better at being number 2s as they say.

Mix em together though and have Axl reign things in, there's magic. And at the end of the day I'd rather have Axl and Izzy + whoever else writing material than Axl and Slash. Axl will always be Axl, but Slash' solo output has been extremely disappointing. I don't trust him at all in that regard.

Meanwhile since the UYI tour onwards no one but us hardcores cares if he's in the band. I love him to death, but if you have Dizzy and Matt up there - you could get Gilby - and have the UYI band play and people would loose their shit reliving the NR video clip, reliving Terminator 2 with YCBM , and when they saw the UYI tour.

The Wal Mart version of GN'R. Also what Slashites and Axl haters call "the original band".

To me live shows is the frozen pizza version of music. Basically the same, just not nearly as good. I want new material and in that regard Izzy is the man you need to go see.

Of course, forgetting for a moment that Axl and Slash together in a kitchen would end in a call to the ER, there's no money in albums anymore. Meaning Axl and Slash wouldn't do it without a tour. And that kind of commitment obviously leaves Izzy out.

So yeah, not gonna happen. At best you'll get an albumless cash grab effort with a singer and a lead guitarist halfway in their fifties + whoever else wants to come along as a backing band.

I'll stick with what we have: Pax Rosa.

"Paulie hated phones. He wouldn't have one in his house. He used to get all his calls second hand, then you'd have to call the people back from an outside phone. There were guys, that's all they did all day long was take care of Paulie's phone call."

"For a guy who moved all day long, Paulie didn't talk to six people. If their was a union problem, or say, a beef in the numbers only the top guys could meet with Paulie to discuss the problem. Everything was one-on-one. Paulie hated conferences. He didn't want anyone hearing what he said, and he didn't want anybody listening to what he was being told."

The guy hates touring. He must need the money.

El Diablo Y La Tierra (The Devil and the Land)

Las nubes se esconden,
revelan la paz superior

Brindan ese bosque,
que en su gloria canta

Yo soy el gran hijo
de aquel que llaman el señor

no olvides mi nombre
yo soy la destrucción

Anybody know Spanish? Google gives me something like this:

Hidden skies
reveal a higher peace

Providing that the forest (masses of people?)
sing in his glory

I am the great son
of him they call The Man

Do not forget my name
I am the destruction

You can't just call Axl. Everything goes through the housekeeper and probably other people before that as well.

Interview with Matt in a Norwegian paper. He said they'd all be sitting at the same table together.

If everybody means everybody or if he's just assuming off some earlier knowledge remains to be seen, but it at least seems he's been told at one point that both Axl and Izzy will be present.

Buscemi is a great actor, but the character of Nucky is not strong enough to play the dominant anti protagonist. He can't carry a show.

The writers probably thought they were real smart when Pitt told them he couldn't commit to more than 2 seasons and they saw the opportunity to have their Pussy Bompensiero moment. It ended up being more of a Stringer Bell thing though, only without any Stanfields to replace him.

When it happened I pictured a room full of suits with tiny champagne glasses laughing and cheering their brilliance.
