I remember at the time Axl got some flak for singing without much rasp, but god damn his voice was still so powerful. He'd learned techniques that he could not do in the 80s and 90s. Just listen to the immense power of this opening scream:

The band is so solid too. I almost want to say Jungle has never sounded better musically.

Love this iteration of the band. Sound quality does appear to be better.

Incredible how this was hidden for so many years.

Honestly Axl Rose might be the only person in the world where I can not make a shred of sense of his thinking.

Slash, Duff we can understand. GN'R is a huge gig, lots of money, big crowds. Free to do whatever they want on the side. A great situation for the both of them.

And then you have Axl. Never liked touring much, don't like cameras, once said he hated living off Appetite for Destruction. What does he do? He goes on a 9 year nostalgia tour playing Welcome to the Jungle every night. His old pals are back in the band, both the media and the public are warming up to him and he could probably release an album with Slash & Duff to great reviews and adulation. Basically everything he's been trying to achieve for the last 25 years. Yet he just sits on his ass with no discernible ambition. Judging by interviews he has not spent as much as 1 second working on new material for over 2 decades. But he did the AC/DC thing like he was a kid again.

That story where some guy supposedly played Better at his high school and everyone started dancing down the hallways will never not be funny.

I can believe that. When I played the first Better leak to some friends of mine they became shell shocked. Could have been a huge hit if they released it then.

Anyone remember the name of that porn star that was here for awhile?

When was this?

I mean, it worked for Axl.

I suspect that his involvement will be very limited – they'll wheel him out, have him do Crazy Train with Zakk Wylde, maybe Iron Man with Sabbath, and then he'll sit back and let the (impressive) guest list do the heavy lifting, then they'll wheel him out again to close with Paranoid.

It's basically the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert but the subject's not dead yet.

Yeah, makes sense. I remember we saw him live in 2006, and already back then we were incredulous at the idea of him performing. To our surprise he came out and killed it. Maybe I'm not giving him a enough credit, but 20 years is a lot. Hopefully he keeps his dignity.

Thanks man.

Sounds like it's basically how it's always been. The band goes in the studio and lays down tracks, then they send it to Axl for him to mull over. Everybody just waiting for him to lay down some vocals.

Don't know why those others don't work, but this thread works.

Just post here splat.

That's a good recap. I can just add some minor things I thought was fun:

Fat kid who claimed Axl let him listen to CD in his car.

IRS played on Mike Trunk

Slash showing up at Axl's house.

Buckethead recording in a chicken coop they built for him in the studio.

Some producer sending Axl ideas on tape, only for Axl to pile them up in his driveway and run them over with his car.

Mike Trunks a good one.  Wasn't Mike Piazza tied into that too?  Was he playing them for him on the show, or did Axl give Piazza the demo's?

The kid who claimed he heard them sounds familiar.  There were some pretty shoddy lies posted on the forums, ppl who would swear they were insiders somehow (My Aunts in the industry, is high up at Best Buy etc)

The storage unti/Tom Zutaut was strange

We were very credulous in those days. I remember in 2002 you could get away with so much shit and everybody would fall for it. On HTGTH the vets once peddled a story there was an unreleased GN'R song from the 90s called Labyrinth. A rare b-side like Crash Diet. They hailed it as better than Estranged. They got half the board including me to believe it.

Me and some guys (Regal99) had a thing on the board 2000 Intentions where we would joke about Dizzy Reed being the creative genius of GN'R. It was like that old McCartney is dead conspiracy where you would find all sorts of clues and interpretations in the album notes, pictures etc. Fun stuff. Anyways, I decided to pull the same joke on another board. I said Axl Rose had left the band and Dizzy was now the leader. People took it seriously and got really angry. 14

Fat kid was in 2006 I think, still fertile ground then. Now everybody would just laugh at these ridiculous attempts to troll people.

Don't know the details about the Mike Trunk thing. Incredible they played that song on the radio and nobody recorded it. Not even a snippet.
