Being "inspired" by trends and actually copying trends is walking a very fine line. You're right though, the trends being used are a definite departure from what was typical of old GNR, even though alot of this stuff is aiming towards UYI territory.

Is it really? Or is it just because that is the only thing there is to compare it to, previous Axl work?

To me it simply sounds like the parts in GN'R I recognize as vintage Axl. I can think of many influences, but the way it's put together is simply classic Axl, and only that. There isn't a single band I can think of that sounds like this band does.

Name one.

Songs being built around hip hop beats. The techno synth flavor added to tracks. The industrial crap. The Prodigy ripoff Silkworms. Turning an an incredibly beautiful song into an 80's power ballad.

These are multiple trends. To me that is no different than OG GN'R incorporating aspects of the Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Elton John etc. and making it their own. Imo that is what great music is about, extracting the best from different styles.

I have yet to have heard Libertad, I think...maybe I heard it once, really can't remember for sure.

Perhaps that is telling enough.

These are definitely visiting my mailbox in the near future. I've been away from Bucket way too long. A little Population Override is all you need to know how much you miss him.

Christ, this man is a genius.

A baz album at display in my collection? Sorry, that's not gonna happen.

I got the songs I need.

The leaked tracks... what current trend is being followed there...?

Every trend from the past twenty years mixed together. It breaks no ground whatsoever, but they do it very well.

Being inspired by trends is quite different from following one. It sounds fresh in GN'R terms. Expecting more than that is unreasonable, especially from a 'mainstream band'.

Axl wanted to try out new things. Imo that's what he's done, and he's done it good. Mission accomplished in that aspect.

The leaked tracks were written years ago.  They were playing catch up on the trends that were already becoming dated at that time.

Name one.

This guy's the new Adler, in each and every way.

Ok, Axl is a great guy. We get it, no need to go down on him twice a week.

Good to see you melissa. You've uploaded some great stuff for me.

#4808 Re: The Garden » Self Esteem » 920 weeks ago

I used to have low self esteem about my looks since I never had a girlfriend in my childhood/teen years. Well, I had one, but that just doesn't cut it in those years. Now I know that was because of some other shit, so these days I think I'm handsome as hell 16

Still got issues with the women though. Never had a steady relationship, and now I'm at a point where I don't want one either. Sorry girls wink

JB, you gotta admit Axl was really wishy washy at the time. Several sources back up what Wylde has claimed. Axl was turning into a band wagon jumper, we just didn't get to see/hear any of it because it was never released. Hell, even Izzy said years ago that when he was approached after the Gilby departure that Axl was obsessed with doing a grunge record. Slash has mentioned this as well.

Its pretty obvious he didn't get a clear vision of a musical direction until the 1999-01 time frame.

The way I see it gn'r was always Axls lifeline. And by that I mean in psychological terms. It was his way of battling insecurity issues by showing that his band was always innovative, didn't become repetitive like ac/dc or crue. You know, his extension of being special. Which is probably also the reason he became so possessive about, and still is. It was more than just a band and a paycheck to him.

So yeah, he probably did look at bands like Jam and Nirvana because they were doing fresh things at the time. That doesn't mean he was gonna make a Jam or Nirvana record. Obviously going by the new songs Axl has never limited himself to imitate any particular style. There is always something of everything.

It's not far fetched to think that some of the other members may have perceived that as him wanting to copy someone or whatever.
