#481 Re: GN'R Downloads » Question about recording (please help!) » 753 weeks ago
Caveat, I'm a homerecorder, I have never recorded a show but I do know a thing or two about mic techniques.
That said, a windscreen has two effects, one wanted, one unwanted.
First of all, it'll minimize the exaggerated effect plosives (p, b, d, k, ...) and sibilants (s, f, z, ...) can get when speaking directly in the mic. Unless you're in a windy outdoors area you shouldn't need this as far away sources don't create this effect. The effect is actually created by the wind gusts produced by those sounds and not by the sound waves produced them. Once your sound source is a foot or so away from the mic the winds are no longer a problem, and they're never a problem from speakers anyway. So, if you're not recording a singer directly, or in a very windy area the windscreens won't do you much good.
Second effect is that it dulls the higher frequencies a little bit, so you'll lose top end if you use them. It's not typically a really big problem as it's only the 17khz and up frequencies that will be muted a little bit (1 to 3db maybe, depending on the material the windscreen is made of), but it's mostly an unwanted side effect. And if you really think your recordings are too bright you might just as well use an EQ afterwards.
Now, the H1 as two mics in XY position, this should typically work best when you're pointing the device towards the sounds source (parallel to the ground) instead of pointing at the sky (perpendicular to the ground). It'll give you more details in the high end. I haven't used this particular device though, so test it for yourself first. Play some music through speakers and try a couple of different positions.
I think you'll see the most gain in quality when you start looking into post-processing the recorded file. EQ & compression are necessities for every recording, and that goes for bootlegs as well. Or in my case, the rehearsals we record in a very similar way.
Hope this helps!

But I think the idea has a darker subtext. And that's the never stated but internalised concept: The reverse of it. If anyone can get rich if they just try hard enough...then surely people who are in a bad way somehow didn't try or they somehow made choices to earn what's comming to them.
And you know what, to a certain degree that's a correct and just idea; you're conscious is just giving you a hard time about it because you've been brought up to be kind and caring about your fellow human beings on the individual level (which is great, by the way, don't get me wrong!). Although I am 100% convinced that the specific kid in your picture hasn't done anything to deserve his situation, I am also convinced that to a great extent his community as a whole is very much responsible for their collective poorness. Very much so. The African people, instead of working together on their famine problems, choose to fight amongst each other. Tribe vs tribe vs tribe. This is civil war at it's hardest and their total disregard for the well-being of their own children is sickening to me.
That's why I'm saying: hold the group responsible instead of being politically correct. The individual should never be judged by the actions of his ethnic peers - that would be racism, but ignoring the real underlying reasons for their situation is dishonest towards those communities who have worked hard to have things like social security, minimum wage, orphanages, health care infrastructure, basic access to technology, ... available to as many people as possible.
We need to realize that they have to want to get out of the rut they are in before we can help them. And by the way, sending money to the "poor Africans" seems like a very disrespectful way to treat an entire race. "They can't make it on their own, if we don't help them" is sort of patronizing, isn't it?

For as much shit as white, redneck, Christians get about that stuff, from what i've seen.... Blacks, Hispanics, and Muslims hate gays ALOT worse than whites.
Yes sir, 100% correct. And I do believe that our dual attitude towards this is a good demonstration of the fact that we still unconsciously think less of certain ethnic/religious groups. We actually expect Muslims, Hispanics, Ghetto Blacks, etc... to be bigots but we hold white folks to a higher standard. Hence all the picking on the "Bible Thumpers" & "Rednecks", I think.
We might not be racists, but we cut them some slack when they disrespect the gay community 'cause after all, "they're Muslims sir... they don't know any better". We don't mind Japanese racism 'cause "it's their culture, we have to respect that".
I am not a racist, I will never stigmatize the individual member of a certain group or religion. But we do collectively have expectations of specific communities, and they vary from group to group. And that's ok, human nature. As long as we don't project those expectations on the individual. Messages like the ones on that car do, and that's racism.

Imagine driving down in Texas with "The Bibel is toilet paper" on your car...
Reminds me of this. Although not exactly the same, and Alabama instead of TX, it's funny nonetheless, and really does drive the point home (lame pun intended):
Apologies for the mirrored clip, there doesn't seem to be a good version on youtube...
Yeah but doesn't that defeat the whole point of free speech?
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it should be illegal... I'm saying it doesn't paint a pretty picture of the guy as far as character & personality goes.
#485 Re: The Garden » BEYOND offensive truck in Detroit » 755 weeks ago
The ones that say, "To All Arabs, Kiss My American Ass" and "Out of Toilet Paper, Use That Koran"
Those aren't really that offensive. And I say because unlike alot of people, I don't see any real reason to run around the world apologizing for being American, fuck that... and the other one refers to a religion, which really deserves no real protection in my eyes. Christians too. They have a right to their religion, and I fuck a right to tell them to fuck off. jmho
Of course you don't need to apologize for being an American, but this specific sticker isn't really about apologizing is it? I mean, you can perfectly "not apologize" by not having this sticker on your car, can't you? My take is you have a lot less to apologize for if you don't have this sticker plastered on your bumper.
#486 Re: Guns N' Roses » Guns N' Roses Vinyl LPs » 755 weeks ago
Whatever the frequencies are, the CD is still in 16 bit samples. It's quantized. Smooth waveforms are turned into blocks.
Sure, they don't author vinyls from analog tape and to analog mastering anymore, but they use more than 16 bits.
Yes, true, however... (and I know I'm getting in digital audio geek territory here, my apologies for that), keep in mind that your bit depth will only determine your dynamic range (which is greater on a CD, even though it's only 16 bits). Your "smoothness" is determined by your sampling rate, which is 44.1khz for CD. According to Nyquist's theorem this means that you can produce audio indistinguishable from the analog waveform op to 22.05khz. So in fact, you can not hear the "digital aliasing artifacts" that so many people seem to attribute to CD's and digital music in general.
That's actually the point I was trying to make. People accredit the fact that vinyl sounds better to the technology, unfortunately that's not really the case. People mix/master brighter and more compressed for CD, which makes it sound harsher/colder and more tiring to the ears. CD should be better in any aspect than vinyl, but the music industry just fucked up a great medium.
Again, sorry for the rant, LPs do rock, but I'd rather people started mixing & mastering like in the old days again for every medium instead of just for LPs.

I wouldn't let anything you're saying get in the way of enjoying the records
I always like to take in as much knowledge as possible but (and I don't mean this in a snotty way) I know what my ears are hearing, you know what I mean? For example, after hearing the 180 remaster of UYI, I would listen to that version from here what whenever humanly possible before ever listening to the CD just based on all the differences I hear.
Rightfully so, one thing you might consider is actually ripping your records to flac or another lossless format and burning them on CD. You should get the exact same experience while not wearing your originals. Although personally I still keep my record player around for the sheer joy of flipping the record every 25 minutes or so
. There's something so physical about it that enhances the experience.
#488 Re: Guns N' Roses » Guns N' Roses Vinyl LPs » 756 weeks ago
Oh wow, good to see that you're really enjoying those LP's Russ, but I do have to say something to try and keep people from buying into the whole "Vinyl is better than CD" thing that seems to be spreading around. Especially your "frequencies" remark is pretty much completely off the mark. The physics just doesn't add up to support such claims.
CD's can accurately reproduce up to 22khz and down to 1hz tones with absolute fidelity. And although it is true that decently made vinyl records can reproduce up to 45khz, the actual highest frequency humans can hear is limited to roughly 20khz for people younger than 20 years old or so (older people fare much worse, topping off at around 17-18khz) so it's a bit pointless in all fairness. To top that off, record players have a problem called "rumble" in the sub-30hz frequencies that basically makes them useless in that range. A problem CD's don't have. Luckily most home equipment can't even reproduce those frequencies anyway, so it's not an audible problem. Speakers are probably your best bet for an upgrade in quality, by the way, and most worthy of spending a good deal of money on. Amps, EQ's, players, etc... not so much. "Monster Cables" and the like are a complete myth and rip-off altogether.
That said, the differences you hear might just well be there, but they're not a limitation of the CD medium. They are more than likely the result of a difference in mastering philosophy for the different mediums. Unfortunately, and counter-intuitively, mastering engineers tend to squeeze out much of the music's dynamics when mastering for CD. Although the medium has a much broader dynamic range than Vinyl (96db vs 70db in best case scenario), somehow people fuck things up during the mastering process. Blame the loudness wars for that.
Bottom line is, it is perfectly possible to make a better sounding CD than any vinyl record can be made to sound. For various ridiculous reasons though the pop music industry just decided not to do so. Classical recording do make the most of the medium, so for proof just listen to a good classical music CD.
But please, don't let the above make you enjoy your records any less, they probably really do sound better than the CD.
#489 Re: The Garden » Survey About Music Downloads » 765 weeks ago
Done, but I'm not sure you'll have much use for my postcode
.
Also, I think some of the questions could have been phrased differently, and I don't feel like I had the tools to properly explain my reasons for downloading. There were some interesting questions as well (trying to figure out the conversion ratio from illegal to legal is an interesting one). Maybe you should revise the questions in a second survey.

Reminds of me W.A.S.P
Yeah, maybe, style of production kinda does (updated for today though, super-loud). But the music itself, dunno, sounds more punk to me than anything. Kinda reminds me of Dog Eat Dog's Rocky...
Fun is the right word to describe this
