Are we talking about Paul Huge? Because all I know of what he did was lay some guitar parts next to Slash on one cover song in 1996 at the end of his stay in the band.

1994, to be exact.

He also went to the 1996 sessions, which were the last ones with Slash in the band. I understand he remained in the band from 1996 to 2002. He has more than one writing credit on CD.

At least, give the man credit where it's due.

Cantor said Slash got angry over Axl nixing the Snakepit songs, which could be the DATS they're discussing in that inetrview (or not).

They are, most likely, those same tapes.

"The coolest omen," says Slash, "was the night I recorded three songs and mixed them that night, which I normally wouldn't do. I went to bed with the DAT in my hand, all 14 songs. [...] And it was like Godzilla came to town. [...] The time was 4:31 a.m., Jan. 17, 1994. The Godzilla in question was L.A.'s 6.7 earthquake." (Slash, Rolling Stone, 04/95)

On January 17th, some two weeks after the Rockline interview, Slash finished up the Snakepit demos. He never set out to do a solo album, he wrote for Guns. That's when Slash and Axl would've started to have issues, which were said to have dragged for months.

The whole Snakepit conundrum happened in early '94. Gilby was still in the band when they were rejected.

misterID wrote:

the evidence shows they tried to make something happen to find a middle ground but couldn't.

They tried a lot. There was the Snakepit material (by Slash, Gilby, Matt & co), there were the last Gilby sessions after that in around April '94, and the Sympathy sessions in October '94, by which time the atmosphere had gotten poisonous, the Zakk sessions in January '95, post-Zakk sessions before Slash left to promote Snakepit...

.. then when Slash came back from Snakepit, there were another sessions in 1996, when, according to Slash, they were working on Axl's material. The biggest question for me is that why this session fell apart and led to Slash's leaving a few weeks later.

i look at the crap metallica has been putting out since they began having a counselor and talking about their problems and tend to agree with misterid.

they could have, yes but what would have come of a band that was so respected for yielding at nothing and had earned the nickname 'the most dangerous band in the world, had they retooled their core values?

I don't think that the last 17 years of Guns N' Roses would have been brighter than Metallica's. In fact GN'R became the ultimate joke of all time. The less pun these days only shows that they have zero relevancy. Thanks Axl.

The other thing people are missing is that GN'R's moment had passed in '94/'95 because of grunge and the emergence of nu-metal. If they'd put out an album with the Snakepit songs, Fall to Pieces and This I Love on it in 1996, it would've flopped. No matter how much better it was than the competition.

I disagree. New styles killed only the smaller bands in the history of music. GN'R were too big to lose relevance. They would have sold less records, but still a shitload. Stones, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, AC/DC etc. survived everything (punk, pop, disco, glam, grunge, techno etc.) with small or no changes in their style. That's the league where GN'R belong to.

Axl was working on November Rain before GN'R even formed. Don't Cry was the first song Axl and Izzy wrote for GN'R. And I'm pretty damn sure YCBM was written before AFD came out. And I'm not a "huge" Izzy fan. I just think he doesn't get the respect he deserves since everyone obsesses over Axl and Slash.

Axl started to write NR in the early 80s. Doesn't mean it was anything close to the song we got in 1991. Not at all. Slash wasn't even around, and he made it an all-time great with those 3 magnificent solos. Nobody's saying that Rocket Queen is a Roadcrew song, although the main themes were written years before GN'R. Same goes for NR.

I'm not a DC fan, although it was a popular song off UYI. But the twins had more popular, and even more better tunes.

YCBM wasn't done at all. That's why it didn't make AFD.

I repeat it: Civil War, Locomotive, Estranged, Coma, Double Talkin' Jive all were written after AFD. So I think they became even better songwriters after the success - but unfortunately the band fell apart, because the ego management failed.

Really surprised with the Todd's vocal, hi kicking ass!

But i have the question - where is Myles? Why he not on stage at all?

He has some time off the stage during the set, when Slash's playing his solos and Todd's singin' 1 or 2 songs.

However, it's a good question that why Myles is away during this song, when Todd's tune is Dr Alibi (or Out ta Get Me). I think they (Myles included) had to face the fact that his voice wasn't 'bad boy enough' to do Jungle. They tried it, but even Slash admitted that they weren't (I guess he wasn't) satisfied with the performance. Hence came Todd. It's still an intriguing situation though, since Myles' favourite song is Welcome to the Jungle...

The Beatles talked about holding hands and submarines but yet they managed to do pretty well!

I think that Guns could have reached Zepplin status, and I don't think that becoming rich had a whole to do with it. They were rich when they made the Illusions and there is pure gold in those albums

Best material on the Illusions was written before Appetite came out. Just saying.

No. Civil War, Coma, Estranged, Double Talkin' Jive were all written after AFD. YCBM and November Rain wasn't done at all before AFD either. These are the best songs of the UYIs. I wouldn't miss the AFD left-overs (Back Off Bitch, Bad Obsession, etc.) too much from the twins.

This 'as soon as they got rich they lost it' stuff just doesn't hold water. Has nothing to do with reality. GN'R could have been the next Led Zeppelin or Stones based on their creativity and artistic strength. They still had a lot to write about, since Axl's poetry is driven by anger, sadness, self-pity, revenge etc. and he's still feeling it. I think it's more appropriate to say that as soon as they got rich, they didn't have the drive to stay together.

I know that you are a huge Izzy fan, but the millionaire Izzy didn't do anything for the band, just walked out when he had enough. Slash, Duff and Axl fought more to make this band functionable, whatever it meant for them.

Yeah, like visiting the dentist. Pure poetry.

2.6 million $s for 14 shows? I'm surprised that Axl is still interested in touring the same show for the zillionth time. I expected a higher sum, although with this attendance, you really cannot have more.
