If it's "The Economy Stupid"  why would you want to put people in office who will raise taxes and implement more social programs, the biggest ever being social medicine, and plunder more of our money?

Much like you 'dismiss' people who quote McCain's 100 year war statement, I laugh at people who say Democrats raise taxes. Do you make over 150K, no offense, but I doubt it. Then chances are Democrats will not raise your taxes. It's called trickle down economics, Reagan invented it. Republicans redduce taxes TO THE EXTREMELY RICH, thinking if they spend more, it provides more jobs in retail, mgmt, marketing etc. That's the THEORY, although in use, it doesn't really work (how's the economy under Bush). Democrats beleive the opposite, tax the extremely rich more, and give breaks to the middle class, and programs, college funds etc. If you disagree with Democrats that's one thing, but to include yourself in categories your not in is being mislead. And Republicans are in no position to talk about responsible fiscal spending. As James has often pointed out, this regime spends money like it grows on trees. Reagan raised the national debt, Clinton balances the budget, and Bush blows it all and raises the national debt exponentially. How are the Republicans the frugal one's is beyond me.

Also, the Democrats can simply shift the spending from not wasteful spending on thsi war. And no, Obama nor Clinton will not agree to being there 100 years. Nor should we. They both stated at some point Iraq will need to take ownership and become responsible for their own country, and they should. (both said 1 year to 1 1/2) Why should we occupy and police Iraq?! Don't say terrorist because they're also in Pakistan, Afghanistan etc. Sure insurgents are resisting our troops, but if we overthrew other governments we'd have the same thing. If we fought Columbia Drug lords would be attacking us. If we fought most African countries (Kenya, Libya, Somalia) their dictators army would be fighting us. We INVADED them. If a country invaded us, either the North or the South, during our Civil war don't you think either of them (North or South) would have fought back.

We fought the wrong war. The people wanted to fight a war on terror, instead we're in the Iraq War. Huge difference. I understand the need for a military service being in charge, but that's what the Commander in Chief is for (Norman Swazkopf for example). We're are not, and should not become a Military State, I don't think most free countries are. There's alot involved with government (economics, foreign relations, domestic issues & spending), it isn't all war all the time. Also, as to why people have turned (I personally was not for the war from the start, and with friends would argue with other friends that the war was going to be ridiculous from the start. The friends who we'd argue with have since turned) is they recalled, and were under the impression, the war would be in & out. Remember the 3 days of bombing, Rumsfeld said he's never seen a war fought with such precision as it was being handled. That was Day 1 or Day 2, then George Bush on the aircraft carrier stated his infamous "Mission Accomplished" statement. Now coming up on 6 years later, we're still at war. And I know alot of good is being done over there, but alot of good could be done in many countries. Including our own. We are not the World Police. You can say Saddam was an evil dictator, but Kim Jung Il of North Korea is likely worse, we don't even know how bad things are over there (can't get in or out). And I'll tell you, starting a war with Iran could be a major fuckup. That is serious shit right there, a bees nest. Literall, a nuclear war could start, I'm not fucking around. The military supporters can say, so what, we'll win, but getting a bomb dropped in the US because we start a war with them also is no victory in my mind. Do not fuck with them. (Yeah, go ahead, call me chicken or scared or whatever you want. If you do I hope the bomb gets dropped on your city then not mine.)

This is pretty big news:

Microsoft Offers $44.6B for Yahoo
By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer
SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. has pounced on slumping Internet icon Yahoo Inc. with an unsolicited takeover offer of $44.6 billion in its boldest bid yet to challenge Google Inc.'s dominance of the lucrative online search and advertising markets.

The surprise offer of $31 per share, made late Thursday and announced Friday, comes with Sunnyvale-based Yahoo in a vulnerable position.

In a statement Friday, Yahoo said it will "carefully and promptly" study Microsoft's bid.

With its profits steadily sliding, Yahoo's stock slipped to a four-year low earlier this week and a new management team has been trying to steer a turnaround but sees more turbulence through 2008.

The announcement sent Yahoo's share price up 60 percent in premarket trading, while Google fell 8 percent, weighted down by a fourth-quarter earnings report that missed Wall Street expectations.

In a letter to Yahoo's board of directors, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer indicated the world's largest software maker is determined to bring the two companies together.

To underscore its resolve, Microsoft is offering a 62 percent premium to Yahoo's closing stock price Thursday.

Since reaching a 52-week high of $34.08 in October, Yahoo shares have fallen 46 percent. Yahoo climbed $10.40 a share, or 54 percent, to $29.58 in premarket trading. Microsoft shares fell $1.40, or 4.3 percent, to $31.20.

Ballmer revealed in the letter that Yahoo had rebuffed a previous overture a year ago, saying it had a turnaround in the works. But he pointedly noted Yahoo has instead deteriorated significantly.

"A year has gone by, and the competitive situation has not improved," Ballmer added.

Microsoft's previous offer was rebuffed by Terry Semel, who stepped aside last year as chief executive under shareholder pressure.

Microsoft sent its latest takeover offer to Yahoo late Thursday, shortly after Semel resigned as the company's chairman. The letter is addressed to Semel's successors, new Chairman Roy Bostock and the current CEO, co-founder Jerry Yang, who is one of Yahoo's largest shareholders.

"Microsoft's consistent belief has been that the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! clearly represents the best way to deliver maximum value to our respective shareholders, as well as create a more efficient and competitive company that would provide greater value and service to our customers," Ballmer wrote.

In a prepared statement, Yahoo said its board "will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo's strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders."

Under terms of the proposed deal, Yahoo shareholders could choose to receive cash or Microsoft common shares, with the total purchase consisting of 50 percent cash and 50 percent stock.

Microsoft said it sees at least $1 billion in cost savings generated by the combination, and intends to offer significant retention packages to Yahoo engineers, key leaders and employees. The software giant said it believes the takeover would receive regulatory clearance and close in the second half of 2008.

Signaling Microsoft doesn't intend to take no for an answer, Ballmer wrote that the company "reserves the right to pursue all necessary steps to ensure that Yahoo's shareholders are provided with the opportunity to realize the value inherent in our proposal."

Google shares fell $46.55, or 8.3 percent, to $517.95 in premarket trading after the Mountain View-based company reported fourth-quarter earnings that missed analyst estimates.

While Yahoo is struggling, Microsoft is thriving. The Redmond, Wash.-based company last week forecast a rosy 2008 _ despite broader economic worries _ after it blew by Wall Street's expectations for a second consecutive quarter.

Wings and beer. C'mon people, how can you mess with that? You bunch of crazies.

How about wings and 20,000+ watching and several hundred thousand listening. It's an annual event which takes places the Friday before the Super Bowl here & is a pretty big event. I checked wikipedia & this years winner ate 241 wings, if that's true it's gotta be a record no one's broken the 200 barrier before (they only have about 30 minutes). BTW a few years ago a 100 lb Korean girl won. People insisted she had a tapeworm in her stomach (we take it pretty seriously here) it was astonishing.

They must have been very small wings this year. I know a new bar/resturant was sponsoring it.

I'll post it here, rather than start a thread over this, but I thought last nights debates were win-win for both candidates. Hillary, stayed calm, and did not play dirty & attack Obama (Did she lock Bill in a closet the past week) which is really what she needed to do. Stay the front runner. On the other hand, Obama didn't 'lose' which showed he can hang with her, is just as competant,  and makes a good candidate who's just as good as any of them. I give them both credit for not playing dirty, and I think this is what America does want, positive races, no more smear campaigns. That's why I still think the Dems will win. McCain is a bit of a slickster, twisting words, calling people flipfloppers etc etc. That's soo 2004. Look what happened in 06?! It no longer worked. He chuckles to himself like he's so great (like Rosco P Coltraine from the Dukes of Hazzard) Almost like he's saying "Good one John" to himself.  I don't think that'll work for 8 more months. Also the war, he's really going to have to change his stance on the whole "be there for 100 years" quote. He'll get killed in the debates for that one. He played dirty with Romney twisting his words around, but Hillary and Obama can defend themselves better. And last night proved that even if Hillary wins the election, Obama will still be there at the Democratic National Convention, and will give one fucking hell of an endorsement speech that's going to own the general election. After the DNC, regardless of who's the candidate, the Dems will win.

#6496 Re: The Sunset Strip » The "LOST" thread » 954 weeks ago

So it still looks like they're not "Off" the island yet (in real time) and the show is giving glimpses of flash forwards as opposed to flash backs. Something to not Hurly, when he got arrested said "I'm one of the 'Oceanic 6' hinting only 6 get rescued. Obviously Kate & Jack, Hurley and I think Jack mentioned Sawyer in last seasons finale. So it's likely them & 2 more.

My only questions is if Jack & Kate (and possibly more) leave with the helicopter that landed last night, THEN Jack argues with Kate about going back (from last seasons finale), they go back, and then rescue 6 more (who are then named the Oceanic 6). Or, does Jack & Kate follow this helicopter, and Locke ends up being right, they only want to keep them on the island, and the do not leave. Or, does Jack attack this helicopter guy & not believe him, staying on the island for now. We'll see, big episode next week.

Cool shit. Not sure what it'll mean for VR. Can't be a good sign of Scott staying in the band.

#6498 Re: The Garden » What are you eating Superbowl Sunday? » 954 weeks ago

I usually don't drink SB Sunday either, not sure why. I think I like watching the game a little bit more, I can sometimes get tired pretty quick when drinking. I'm going snowboarding during the day, & will probably get home right around kickoff. No time to cook, takeout will take forever, so I'll probably order wings or pizza the night before, and keep it in the fridge overnight. Most likely wings. James, those Chili Dog Nachos sound awesome, I'll have to see if  they have a recipe on their website for another day.

#6499 Re: The Sunset Strip » New Kids on the Block to Reunite? » 954 weeks ago

^^ Yeah, it's like when The Monkees would tour when we were young. But The Monkees had a TV show which was running reruns afterschool, and they were an actual band, so I would think a few older girls were a little interested. NKOTB is just 5 guys jumping around and singing & dancing. This doesn't bode well for either the younger or older generation. Young kids didn't want to see the Monkees because they're parents were into them, they wanted to go because of the TV show they'd see after school.  Again, I'm predicting colassal failure. I can't think of any girls in their 30's I'd know who'd think about going to this. Bon Jovi, yes. NKOTB,absolutely not.
