#7811 Re: Guns N' Roses » Matt Sorum: Axl shouldn't tour under GNR name » 889 weeks ago

Maybe sorum was just trying to not insult gilby too much. He spent a lot of years with that guy. But more over...

While Izzy was key for writing and I have a ton of respect for him....I think the general public will accept the UYI line up ...Gilby, Sorum, Duff, Slash and Axl as GNR in a way that they wouldn't accept any of the new line ups. even if it wasn't the GNR from AFD.

I think that's all sorum was getting at...I'd say you could probably take it further and say basicly anything with Axl and Slash would be GNR to most general public.

many harccores like us respect Izzy, duff, and steven and to some of course the new band people as well...and realise that the sound is fundementally changed when any of them goes....but I think to most in the world they rememebr a dude in a tophat and a dude in bike pants and a bandana...and that's what GNR means to them.

I think "Estranged" is their best song, but I don't think it ever had the potential to be bigger than "November Rain", it's just not that universally commercial.

While I enjoy estranged, maybe my tastes are too comerical, as I think it's far from the best overall GNR track. But then that's difficult anyway as you have to seperate the rock type ones from the ballads.

I'd love to see what happens if we did this game without GNR in the future too. smile

Kinda hope this one is a bit different from the last few...

this might sound odd, but I'd love to see bucket in a more mainstream setting. Which is what i was hoping for in GNR but it only happened to an extent. I know he excells at the advant guarde kinda stuff....but there's only so many nights I want to listen to cool guitar with wierd vocal samples and noises and stuff over the top....like sometimes I miss more traditional rock structures and vocals....and I'd love to see what he could do within that context as I know he's got kickass technical skills. You know like to me TWAT is no-where near his best solos, but it's awesome because it's in a song context you can sing along with - rather than what he does at the moment which is create kickass instrumentals...

If he'd played like Soothsayer or Notthimham lace in GNR it would have been insane. Didn't happen....but I'd like to see him move on from what he puts out these days. Just my opinion though.

#7814 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Slash to be on American Idol next week » 889 weeks ago

I don't think people should be anti slash for doing this.

However..

I'm not a fan of the genre as I see AI and similar shows as nothing more than karokee contests. It seems to me that what they do is find the people who are the best at doing COVERS, and then ask them to be creative and give them record contracts. Why would that work? That a person is good at singing others songs doesn't mean they will write good things, and likewise in a sence finding someone who can sing good in a variety of styles just turns into "jack of all trades master of none". What of people like Brian Johnson of Ac/Dc who sound awesome in one style - his hardrock screach...he'd be kicked out when he sang a robbie williams ballad badly. It's a stupid idea IMO. So i dont like the concept.

But that said, this is where the industry is at, it's what the market is doing. Slash is a professional musican at an eliete level, and it makes sence for him to get involved in the current trends of the market. It's his job.

If Estranged would've been released BEFORE November Rain, it would've gotten the same fan fare. It's an amazing song. The problem was, casual audiences had OD'ed on the overindulgence of the Illusions by the time the Estranged came out, and it was kind of given the treatment of "one epic ballad too many". In the eyes of the casual audience, Don't Cry & Rain were enough.

I also think part of the problem is that Estranged's subject matter is much heavier and less easy for the general public to deal with. Like "Don't Cry" is a pretty straight forward love song, and "November Rain" while it has some dark undertones is a very easy song to emphaise with - a love lost etc - but "Estranged" is coming from a much darker place.

While there are no doubt countless people who have felt suicidal and can relate to the confusion and distress in those lyrics as well, there's also a ton of people who arn't emotionally sensitive enough or just arn't wired that way to really ever comprehend being in the kind of position the protaginist of Estranged is.

Which,  I think in terms of being a hit to the masses makes it less popular.

It's a brilliant song overall, amazing lyrics, beautiful and haunting guitar passages. I love it. But I do see it as somewhat of an Art Piece - it's not for everyone. It's just not as accessable to the average listener as a more 'mainstream' song. Which doesn't make it bad at all, but it is a certain genre.

This album is killer. I really don't understand the dislike of it around forums. Sure it's not original material. But there's some killer peformances from Axl and Slash in particular on this album.

Man this stuff scares me. I remember watching a doco on Pandemics...i think it was a bonus feature on the "I am legend" BD. Freaky stuff.

#7819 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Matt Sorum Interview "We need a singer soon" » 889 weeks ago

Yeah...they would be insane with Bach...I think slash said when they auditioned with him originally that they felt it would make them like a Skid Row copy...which i guess is a danger given Baz's voice is so distinctive...but it's a shame cos it would have been killer.

These days it's not even an option as Baz's renewed friendship with Axl would prohibit it.

Interesting Article this one. I know a lot of dudes here don't like Matt, but I'll give him that he's pretty straight forward in these inteviews. I hope they find someone....someone with a cornell type flavour like he says would be awesome.....I think its better to wait than do someone crap...as much as Scott was wrong he did have some talents...so using someone really B list would fuck up the band for good.
But I also feel that in this situation there is a risk of always holding out for someone better. Like a person who stays single forever cos there is always someone hotter. Like you could find faults in amazing people like Axl, and Cornell even...so like I'm worried that if they're auditioning no-body's and they have this power inbalance like they are VR and the singer is no-one, then like even if the next Axl or Chris came along, they might over-focus on the dudes faults and keep waiting. Although i guess its a fine line. Cos no one wants them with a bad singer either. The singer is so important.

Yeah if it's only 5 hours away...and if it was his anniversary it could easily be that they'e just taken like a weekend off or something and then are back to it.
