why would a record company not want to release a record? especially considering the longer they waited, the less it would sell. what's their agenda there? fuck with axl?

The scenario people paint is something like this, don't know if it's true:

The label has one more record on their contract with GNR at the existing rate. Then they have to either renegotiate a new deal (give GNR stuff) or GNR goes solo and releases it's own records on it's terms (Label is left out or only gets distribution or something). So one record left to make some serious money.

Axl:  "Hey Guys. My follow up to Chinese is an experimental album that's even more techno in a late 1990s way than the last album. It's got a bunch of randoms on the album. We play mostly thought provoking sounds and poems in other languages  interpreted through an etch-a-sketch wired into a diswasher. It will really challenge what GNR means to people but it is GNR as surely as anything ever was"

Label: Are you sure you wouldn't maybe like to reunite with Slash and make Use Your Illusion 3 or AFD2018 ?

Axl: Cool ideal. I will do that some day in the future when I have my own record company. But for now I want the last involvement you guys have to be the Dishwasher record.

Although I think it could also be something simple like:

Fernando: Hello Label. When we release an album in 2019 we will need full marketing support and tour support just like in 1989.
Label: Hmm..we want to release something but the industry has changed, how about some marketing for some tour profits shared?
Fernando: I fuck your asses with a plunger you cheats.
Label: Umm...Axl...fernando is talking about our asses?
Fernando: Dad the labels are dicks.
Axl: Fuck the label with a tyre iron...i'll be playing golf for the next 40 years when you change your mind...

and he's still playing golf.

Work of fiction...but you know....wouldn't surprise me.....

It begs the question if there are aliens what happened to them?

Did they evolve to something new or beyond physical?

Did they wipe themselves out?

Did they travel to some other dimension or something of that nature?

They had several options.

A new Live Era
New 2 disc GH/Best of
AFD/Lies anniversary editions
live DVD/Blu Ray
new single/song on a soundtrack
box set of demos
box set containing discography
CD II disguised as new album
an actual new album

They went with none of the above. None. It's not just frustrating on a hardcore level either. Common sense would dictate at least one of those releases, likely several. IMO it goes way beyond the typical "Axl hates his fans" or "TB doesn't know its asshole from its elbow" that fans usually blame. It goes deeper than that.

The thing is - when angered Axl will cut off his nose to spite his face.

Seriously, once he gets that indignant rage he will weather the storm of self harm to get a jab into someone else.

You could view a lot of the UYI walkouts that way - while he had a point sometimes most artists wouldn't face the shitstorm of ending a show early.

You can view the Chinese Democracy release that way too. Something went wrong at the label so Axl punished them with absolutely zero promotion and utter silence around the most anticipated release of a rock band in decades. Did it hurt him - probably - but he made his point.

In this era the band can make its millions from touring, so if someone at the label won't play ball and suck the band's cock just the way they want, then GNR will be happy to let them swing in the breeze forever.

Add to that that Axl probably has significant anxiety issues around releasing new music after the shit show that was the past 30 years.

Wow.

I knew it was under-whelming to most fans, didn't realise it was in that much trouble.

You'd think heads would roll for expectation-losses of that kind.

It's not being negative for the sake of it.

It's been 10 years since Axl last released an original track - and that was an entirely different band to the original act.

It's been 25 years since Axl and Slash last played on a covers album together, and 27 years since the last originals record with them both on.

I am a fan of their MUSIC - it's not unreasonable to want them to make more music. It's not like they have a huge back catalogue as it is.

One day it's going to be impossible because they will be dead - and we'll be looking at 27 years of inactivity and realise the waste.

This "all the time in the world" sentiment is nonsense.

That's my concern.

Due to issues in my personal life I admit i'm leaning towards anxious views at the moment.

But right now Axl is 56, Slash is 52, Duff is 54.

For the modern era that's relatively young if you happen to be one of those people blessed with good genes and fortune.

But it isn't that way for everyone, for example my father died at 57 (many years back now).

These guys don't exactly have stellar medical backgrounds - we're taking decades of drug use, alcohol abuse and god knows what else.

I mean i hope they do a Keith Richards and stay alive somehow despite the odds.

But Steven Tyler at 69 - looks to be in better health than Axl at 56.....that doesn't fill me with confidence.

Let's be real - projects for Axl tend to take several years even when he's got his heart set on doing it - it took 2 years for the UYI vocals - it took 2 years from 2006 when CD was basically completed (Bumble additions) to actually get it out in 2008. So yeah...it's 2 years from when they start working on it at least probably. Maybe they could skip some of that by using older tracks and overdubbing slash - but who knows if those songs are what Axl would want to do anymore.

So I think an Ac/Dc record will be pretty awesome, but yeah, this development is not a good sign for us ever getting a GNR record.

Sorry to be so negative everyone, I just worry one day we will wake up to the news that this wait is over, and not because an album is out.

Is the clock running out? Yes. Having said that, you cant really look at it in those terms anymore.

The world has changed, more specifically the musical landscape. We're getting awfully close to albums meaning nothing anymore and may have already crossed that line.  They are a minor promotional tool for your tour and are forgotten about five minutes after they stop trending days after the release. Nobody in the crowd is really there to hear any of it unless its some massive single.

But I do feel that GNR was owed a comeback album - Soundgarden, Motley, VH, AC/DC - all of them used an album as part of their reunions.

However generally I agree in the business sense.

But you'd think this would be a chance for the artistic side to shine through.

Lets face it - they're not going to be broke at this stage anyway - they just made hundreds of millions. So now they can do stuff thats artistically fun.

I bet shows are fun. But you'd have to think for a creative mind - making some new songs with your old chemistry might be a little more interesting than bumping your WTTJ live playcount from 3021 to 3022 times.

A lot of people who rolled with Axl talked about how creative he really is. Be nice for history to get some of it.

No one owes us anything as we're told often, but it's not every day an Axl meets a Slash in real life - let the universe have it's way - do something with whatever fate made you meet.

#789 Re: Guns N' Roses » Dissecting Chinese Democracy: Track 6 - There Was A Time » 425 weeks ago

I've said in like 200000 posts...but I think this song is Axl's greatest vocal performance. The screams in the middle are just incredible...so hard to sing and add so much emotion and passion musically to the song.

#790 Re: Guns N' Roses » New Slash solo album with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators incoming » 425 weeks ago

Yes.

It's negative to say but the reality is from this age onwards every year or two they will most likely get a little worse.

In my opinion slash peaked in 2012 - his playing is still phenomenal beyond a mortal by leagues - but if you analyse it it's just the smallest touch not as good in 2017 than it was previously. It's not drastic yet but how will it be 6 years from now?

Axl's 2016 performances seemed good compared to lackluster 2012-2014 efforts but even so - at his best this tour he still has not been able to sing the high parts on twat using the original melody the way he could in 2009.

He was crazy good in Ac/Dc - but you could see those songs relied heavily on the scream only - which he nailed - but GNR doesn't - and either through damage, exhaustion, or just boredom by the time the 2017 shows came around his voice was cracking and he was clearly struggling.

Now i'm not saying everything is shit. It's enjoyable anyway and i'm sure most casuals don't notice. But what I am saying is - if you analyse it - you can see the years are starting to take their toll.

Can't blame the bastards - even rock gods are human in the end. I can't do what i did 5 or 10 years ago either anymore. No hard feelings.

But we can be smart about it - and that is - basically they no longer have the time to burn like they did in the past.

In the end is it better they die with another album or having another 200 hundred performances of AFD under the belt? History deserves another album before the end - and time is ticking.
